EVELETH, Minn. - Brett Hull (http://tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=647) and longtime New York Rangers Brian Leetch (http://tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=422) and Mike Richter (http://tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=438) are members of the 2008 class of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
The four-member group announced Tuesday also includes Cammi Granato, the all-time scoring leader for the U.S. women's hockey team with 343 points in 205 games.
Hull, one of the leading goal scorers in NHL history with 741, recorded 1,391 points in a 20-year career that included Stanley Cup titles in Dallas and Detroit.
Leetch was an 11-time all-star in 18 NHL seasons, all but one with the Rangers. He won two Norris Trophies as the league's best defenceman and was a Stanley Cup playoff MVP.
Richter was a three-time all-star in a 14-year career as goalie with the Rangers.

5 Ways That I'd Change the NHL by Ross Bernstein

1. Get rid of the instigator penalty. It is a hideous rule that needs to be killed. It allows the agitators way too much power to roam free and pester the opposition's top players. These filthy disturbers are getting away with murder, turtling and hiding behind the rule as soon as an enforcer challenges him or tries to hold him accountable for his actions.
2. Allow the enforcers to wear the "ultimate fighter" gloves. Look, enforcers serve a purpose out on the ice and without them we would never see our star players score goals. Like it or not, their presence keeps the peace. They are specialists, like kickers or punters in football. You may not agree with them, but you can't win without them. Everything has gotten bigger in the NHL over the years except the surface of the ice. Heavyweights of old were 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds, while today they can go as big as 6-foot-7 and 275 pounds. These guys are monsters and it is just a matter of time before one of them connects with an overhand right and kills somebody. A lawsuit like that could shut down the entire league. The gloves will help out and still let these guys be effective in doing their jobs.
3. Make the enforcers "flip their lids" when they drop the gloves. There are way too many hand injuries suffered by these guys from hitting helmets -- especially the code breakers who dip their heads during combat. We don't want to see our heavy's on the shelf with busted knuckles, we want to see them on the ice. The kids do it in junior and it works, so I say have the big boys do it too. Lose the helmets.
4. Expand from 30 to 32 teams, just like the NFL, with eight four-team divisions. Put a couple of teams back up in Canada too, where they belong. There are plenty to choose from south of the Mason Dixon Line -- take your pick, we don't care.
5. Realignment, Realignment, Realignment ... As a follow-up to No. 4, I would love to see my Minnesota Wild (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/teams/min/) get put into a new realigned division alongside Chicago, Detroit and St. Louis. These west coast times are killing us and our kids can't stay up until one in the morning on school nights to watch the games. That is your future fan base talking... HELLO? Plus, we aren't going to make a road-trip to Calgary or Vancouver to watch our squad -- but we sure as heck will drive to the Windy City or Motown to see some blood. We have natural rivalries with these cities in other sports, so it only makes sense. Bring back the old Norris baby!

TSN says:

Bryan McCabe (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=987) isn't going anywhere – until the Toronto Maple Leafs pay him $2 million in an owed signing bonus on Sept. 1.
But, as soon as the Leafs make that payment to McCabe, sources close to the Leafs say he will become part of a trade with the Florida Panthers.
All the pieces of the transaction have reportedly been agreed upon - sources say the Panthers and Leafs have settled on the players involved and McCabe has indicated he will waive his no-movement clause to go to Florida - and the only reason to delay the transaction is to allow Toronto, not the Panthers, to be on the hook for the signing bonus.
Florida would then be on the hook for the balance of McCabe's contract, which will pay him $4.15 million ($6.15 million minus the $2 million dollar signing bonus) this season and $4.15 million in each of the remaining two seasons, although McCabe's salary cap hit for the Panthers will be the same as it was for the Maple Leafs -- $5.75 million.
Leaf sources say there is likely to be another Leaf player going to Florida as part of the package and Toronto is expected to get at least one player back from the Panthers, but Panther defenceman Jay Bouwmeester (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=2876), the subject of much trade speculation in south Florida, is definitely not involved in any way.
In the past, McCabe has refused to waive his no-movement clause, but Pulver added he believes McCabe's future in Toronto will be resolved before training camp opens, stating "early in September" as a likely target.
"We continue to discuss all options, including staying with the Maple Leafs or the possibility of going somewhere else," Pulver told TSN.
Last season, McCabe scored five goals with 18 assists and minus-2 rating.

I think you guys are severely overselling McCabe right now, I'd see a pick/not their best prospect(s) in return.

im not interested in a prospect, give a young player that has plenty of years ahead of him. the leafs dont need any more dmen, they already have an excess of them.

fletcher isnt going to deal mccabe unless he's getting something in return. im hoping he's not foolish on this one here. a dman is not what the leafs need, fuck jay bo or mike van ryn. we already have 2 young leafs dmen that will either be healthy scratches watching from the pressbox or in the minors because the leafs already have too many dmen.

why go and acquire another dman? yeah if the player is significant and will make an impact, but if its jay bo it probably wont do the leafs much good. he's going to need a new contract in a year and it'll probably cost the leafs a few bucks... something like jeff finger type of money, likely even more. i can only seeing it hurt the leafs.

give me a forward with upside and potential. give me a motherfucking forward that can put the puck into the net. that's what the leafs need.

Pollo

Burke needs to cut salary to go with the cap, and Schneider is the only option since no one will take Marchant

then look for him to be trade deadline bait. it makes a hell of a lot more sense for contenting teams, no?

Pollo

I wouldn't mind that, the issue is that Burke needs to cut salary to meet the cap prior to the start of the season. and if Selanne decides he wants to return, there's no way he'll be able to fit him unless he parts with Schneider.

really the only thing we can get back for Mathieu is decent prospects, although I would love to get some more offense on this team if Selanne is gone. It would be nice to have him back as Captain of the Leafs to offer leadership to the young guys...

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The NHL refuses to entertain compensation offers from a newly formed Russian hockey league for the signing of forward Alex Radulov while the player was under contract with the Nashville Predators.

And until Radulov's contract with the Predators is honoured, the NHL won't consider negotiating a player transfer agreement with the Continental Hockey League (KHL), NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told The Associated Press in an e-mail on Monday.

"The bottom line from our perspective is that the player has a contract which our rules obligate him to respect," Daly said. "Our rules don't recognize a player (or his new team) being able to 'buy' the way out of an existing contract. It's not a scenario that our existing rules contemplate or allow."

Radulov is at the centre of a controversy between the NHL and the KHL after the player signed with KHL's Ufa last month.

KHL president Alexander Medvedev said Radulov's signing was legal because it occurred days before the leagues reached an agreement to not sign players under contract. Medvedev added that Ufa has since made an offer to compensate the Predators, but has yet to receive a response.

Daly said he isn't aware if an offer was made, but insisted that such a deal wouldn't be accepted.

The Predators declined comment, deferring the matter to the NHL.

The exchange between league officials came after Medvedev met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman last week in an attempt to secure a formal player transfer agreement that would provide compensation for teams in both leagues that lose players. Medvedev said he presented the NHL with a framework of a deal that would provide a formula for compensation based on the age of a player, how high he was drafted, and other variable factors.

Daly said the NHL is open to negotiating such a deal, but not until the Radulov issue is resolved.

Medvedev said there is no mechanism in the KHL rules to force Radulov's return to the NHL, and said the matter might have to be resolved in court.

He argued that Radulov's case is no different than NHL teams signing Nikita Filatov (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/players/Nikita_Filatov), Viktor Tikhonov (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/players/Viktor_Tikhonov), Jason Krog (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/players/Jason_Krog), Tomas Mojzis and Fedor Fedorov (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/players/Fedor_Fedorov), all of whom he said were under contract in Russia.

Daly disputes that claim, saying the league has documentation stating that those players were free to sign with their respective NHL teams.

The International Ice Hockey Federation is investigating the status of all six players, including Radulov. The IIHF doesn't have the authority to rescind contracts, but could bar players from taking part in international competitions, including the Olympics.

Medvedev, last weekend, announced the KHL has extended a moratorium preventing its teams from signing NHL players under contract.

"We should forget emotions and we should start a new life with a transfer agreement in place," Medvedev said. "But without such an agreement, if somebody will break the moratorium ... then it will be everybody could take any player and it will not be good for hockey."

Daly dismissed the moratorium by questioning why one was necessary.

"The KHL shouldn't need a 'moratorium' to adhere to a policy of respecting legal and binding contractual commitments," Daly said.

With Pierre-Marc Bouchard locked up to a new long-term contract, the Minnesota Wild have shifted their focus on to Marian Gaborik, reports the Ottawa Citizen.

On Saturday, Bouchard inked a five-year, $20.4 million contract. Gaborik will undoubtedly receive a higher contract, one that could be the richest in franchise history.

"Now that Pierre-Marc is done and we know what our team looks like going forward, it's time we start talking to Marian," Wild assistant GM Tom Lynn told the Citizen.

According to the paper, the Wild will pitch a variety of proposals to Gaborik in early August, ranging from four- to seven-years in length.

Gaborik, 26, is one-year away from unrestricted free agency. The Sun claims the Wild plans to make an offer averaging in the $8.5 million range.

Gaborik can ask for as much as 20 percent of the team's salary cap, which would climb past $11 million a season, but Wild GM Doug Risebrough told the St. Paul Pioneer-Press that Gaborik's salary won't reach that figure

I predict Gaborik becomes a FA and sign with Vancouver to play with his buddy Demitra.

to the 8th page convo about mats, cmon boys, we fucking know exactly what sundin wants. he doesn't want to go to a builder, he wants a contender that can win it in a year or two.

if sundin wants to go to a builder he'll park his swedish ass in toronto. i wouldnt mind seeing him a wing, but he'd have to play for $1 million for the year. if im sundin, and i see that roster and the potential, i do it. the leafs have made him rich enough throughout his career, he really doesn't need another season of $6+ million.

yeah yeah yeah, but the money would be nice.

then again, when you retire and look back at your career and you see no award, no rings, then you might wonder "what if i took that pay cut and went to a real contender"

Well I would welcome him on the Pens. But they would have to clear some cap space, I think we only have about 2 mill left under the cap, and they usually like to leave some space for the trade deadline. Granted a center is basically the last thing the Pens need, but I have heard the Matts could make a pretty easy transition to the wing plus he would be able to take key faceoffs. So would I.

And I'm being totally serious (if I was gay) because I had a big poster of her in my room when I was about 12 and I dressed like her, wanted to hang out with her and thought she was the coolest fucking girl on the planet. Now she's just hot.
Now your just getting me excited.

A lot of prospects have benefited from staying in college for another season and he is only 19

Is Shanny retiring?

Last year he had 46 points and a minus 2. Not bad numbers.

I thought I read somewhere though that he wanted to play one more season. It does seem that the NHL is going through a youth movement right now though, so will have to see...

Soon enough it will be done... Then the leafs should have answers, where will their former captain go... What will we get for Mccabe...

I am still surprised they did not move Kubina. He did have 40 points and was a +5, so really not that bad I guess...

I also wonder if Simon Gamache get more time with the team... He was not that bad...

shdaow
08-23-2008, 12:18 AM
Well, we couldn't totally dismantle our blueline. Kubina and Kaberle play together a lot internationally, and they seem to be very effective as a pairing, so now that McCabe is out of the picture, they can make that a full time pairing which makes me very happy.

The question is, who gets Captaincy now? As much as I love TK, he doesn't seem like the captain type. Sundin is as good as gone. Stajan, IMO is too young and inconsistent. Same goes for Steen. Looking by age, it seems it would fall on Kubina, Kaberle, Mayers, Antropov, Hagman and Jason Blake, but I'd only feel comfortable with Kubina or Kaberle out of that lot being Captain. I'm guessing we're waiting for Jason Blake to get hot again to trade him, as his value is nearly zero with his sickness and lack of production. Tis a shame we couldn't name Vezina Toskala our Captain.

Cornflake
08-23-2008, 01:50 AM
I am betting it will be Blake or Kaberle as captain.

Just a thought... I think Mark Bell was to do some Jail time this summer... Is he going to be available for the start of the season???

I read an article in TSN about him, I think he's already served it. I hope he bounces back with a strong year this season.
