It could be argued, however, that what good is having Powell as a registered Republican if he will publicly support a liberal Democrat President?

It's the same thing for Specter; whether he has a little 'R' or 'D' next to his name, if he votes with the Democrats the majority of the time, it really doesn't matter what his title is.

George Bush is from Texas, John McCain is from Arizona, I don't want either of them representing the Republican party. It's about conservative values, not sheer numbers. Having members who don't represent the party or represent it poorly is worse for the life of the party in the long run than simply having less members.

No, I don't see a problem with it. Especially when that group isn't really all that big. Powell and Specter have always been liberals. They don't share the same values of the party and never really have. I have no problem with them leaving the party.
I would rather be a small party with strong values than a large party that tries to encompass everything and make everyone happy and therefore stand for nothing.
I actually think it would be nice to get rid of a lot of the other career RINO's as long as we have already lost the majority in the House and Senate. I would like to see Snowe, Collins, and a few others go ahead and declare that they were switching parties.

I'd rather keep the RINO's. Whatever party controls the center, controls the government. The Republicans lost the US because the party went too far right (not even right, really, more astray, but that's a different conversation) and lost the center.

TiM's point about the danger of letting Limbaugh represent the Republicans is dead-nuts-on. The party already has it's work cut out for it in getting away from W. Bush. The center associating Republicans with that bombastic stool is the last thing the party needs.

That's why the dems were smart not to run Joe Lieberman out on a rail, even with his mixed record (and Johnny Mac endorsement). They're still better off with him caucasing with them, as apposed to against them.
