Features of Mercenaries 2 include an online co-operative mode[3], a fire effects engine that allows the player to ignite material such as foliage and trees, and the ability to swim. Although a player can set fire to foliage, it has been said by developers that one can not spread a fire across the entire map. Pandemic recently upgraded to the Havok 5.5 physics engine[4]. To complement the new swimming mechanic, new vehicles such as boats have been added.[5] Hijacking still plays a large role in gameplay, but instead of being a fixed cinematic, now consists of a small minigame with difficulty relative to the worth of the vehicle being hijacked. A grappling hook has been added to allow the player to hijack helicopters. Another new feature is the ability to switch from driver to gunner at will. Players have the ability to build a Private Military Company and recruit mercenaries with it. There are three mercenary NPCs that may be recruited: Eva Navarro (a mechanic); Ewan, a helicopter pilot who has the ability to pick up valuable objects you may encounter and also extract you to various unlockable locations if necessary; and Mischa, a bomber pilot, who can be hired as your source for airstrikes.[6]

New to the game will be a variety of air support and airstrikes, such as the use of tactical nukes. The Nuclear Bunker Buster airstrike and the M.O.A.B were demonstrated at E3 2008.
The game will include numerous side missions that can be completed to increase the players reputation with a faction and earn him or her extra cash. Similarly, some missions will harm the player's reputation with a faction. This mechanic will limit the pool of missions available to the player.
Instead of a structured bounty system, such as the Deck of 52 from the last game, Pandemic has instead opted for a smaller roster of bounties in a simple high-value target system.
The game also features a new co-op mode that allows two players to play through the game together online,as well as Local. Co-op is seamless "drop-in, drop-out". When a player joins anothers player's game, the player is able to choose which mercenary to play as. The player will join the host no matter what they are doing in their game. Every single mission and activity in the game can be completed in co-op. Consequently, there are no co-op or single player exclusive missions. A half kilometer tether has been added to keep the players from straying too far away from one another.
The arsenal of weapons and airstrikes is larger and more diverse than the one in the previous game. The total number of vehicle types, for example, has been increased to approximately 170. Vehicles can be transported anywhere in the game area. In an E3 2007 stage demo, it was shown that if the player did not clear an area of enemies before calling in a vehicle, the helicopter dropped the vehicle when fired upon, regardless of how close it was to the designated drop zone.

So does anybody have this game yet? Is it worth a buy for someone looking for good online and split screen co-op and skirmishes? I need a game where me and a couple of my buddies can get drunk and play.

I like the guy in the beginning that has a gun aimed and has like 15 seconds to shoot, but just stands there.

What's with the hate bandwagon? Pandemic's a good developer, and this looks pretty fun.

I've been playing it since Sunday and really like it. I liked the first one and this one is pretty similar to the first but much improved. The weapons and vehicles are way fun. I like the "roaming" capability of being able to just wander around and blow shit up.

How's the multi player, that's the gamebreaker for me

It alright...I was hoping for more, it would have made it into my all time fave's. "At any point in the game, another player can jump right into the action and join Mattias on his current mission. The screen shifts to a split screen perspective, and each player is free to do as he wishes without any forced ties to the other player. This makes for some unique and cool strategies in the game. So far, the multiplayer is limited to two player split screen on one system. Pandemic has not announced any plans for online play. " (Gamespy)

Thanks, that's kind of a bummer but it seems better than what COD 4 offered. I'm getting pretty sick of only playing Halo with other people I live with online.

Bought it earlier tonight (along with Fable II preorder with free Pub Games) but haven't had a chance to play it yet.

So far so good. Roaming and blowing shit up is always fun. My brother and I will be playing it online tonight hopefully.

Well after playing it for awhile its pretty fun. I picked Mathias. I thought he sounded like the dude that played Kano in the MK movie. But it ends up being Abruzzi from Prison Break.

Wait so is this two player co-op on one system or only online?

Edit: And is it just me or do the enemy bullets move somewhat ridiculously slow?

yes they do. a friend of mine said the best thing about this game: It's one you play at your friends house or on the demo system at your local game store (which is what I've been doing all week)

Been playing the PC version of this today, can't say Ive been overly impressed with so far.

The handling of the vehicles is absolutely godawful and gunplay is quite unsatisfying, there seems to be no accuracy in the rifles whatsoever and its almost random where the bullets fly within the circle no matter how slow and controlled you are in firing.

I'll give it a few more hours to see if it can change my mind.

So I just got it yesterday, It's not a masterpiece but it's a good mindless fun game. I love how almost everything can be moved/changed/destroyed. I think I'll have a fun play through with it.
