For me, hands down, Dave Matthews Band - Live in Central Park
I think it's their best live cd, all the songs sound amazing, I just love it a lot...

Alternatively it'd be Joanna Newsom - Ys

Abbey Road. I have a weird relationship with the Beatles. They're one of my favorite bands, like most rock fans, sure, but I think most of their albums are hella overrated. Like, the White Album is good, but are all-time great albums supposed to have double-digit terrible-to-skippable tracks? I always thought Revolver was crazy overrated, most of McCartney's songs on the record are junk and other than Tomorrow Never Knows and I'm Only Sleeping there aren't any transcendently great songs. Sgt. Pepper's is amazing, but I've heard better. But Abbey Road is everything I want out of an album. It isn't just that it moves me, or has captivating lyrics, or that it effortlessly changes speeds, or that it has awesome guitar solos. It's that every song - I mean EVERY song - has that untraceable, ethereal quality that just makes the song better than damn near everything else. It's completely indescribable, but when you hear it - like on Dark Side of the Moon or None So Vile - you know it. Abbey Road is the most magical album I've ever heard, and it's my #1.

Nah, I love Polly. it has one of the greatest lines.

"It amazes me, the will of instinct"

Also, he was a fan of Lou Reed, who has all those 'says' songs (like candy says, lisa says, and stephanie says) and this is his says song. That might sound crazy but who cares.

Polly says...

TheImpossibleMan
09-06-2008, 10:31 PM
Disagree. I dunno, Beach Boys never really got to me. I think a lot of their stuff is transcendently good (songs like Fun Fun Fun or Little Deuce Coupe) but I never was floored by them consistently. Pet Sounds is great...but there are a lot of great albums out there, you know?

EDIT: I read through this thread. Holy shit OSUMike is a douchebag. It's funny, NukeJew, your quote about "Come out of your plastic bubble" is so appropriate - in the Metallica thread I asked "How can you call them 'metal's finest' when you don't listen to metal?" and he said "Because they are." He really has no taste and no experience and acts like an authority on things he doesn't know anything about.

TheImpossibleMan

When you use the death grunt, you're trying to accomplish something artistically different from someone who uses clean vocals. Opeth does a great job of highlighting this contrast, juxtaposing sections with clear vocals against sections with harsh vocals. Lord Worm of Cryptopsy does an amazing job of using his voice as an instrument.

This is the meaning of talent, for anyone who doesn't know. To perform vocals like this does not just require shouting BLAH! at the top of your voice in an ironic manner. This [referring to the album he's reviewing] requires a deep guttural growl that takes years to perfect and utilise at high speeds and precision, and to go from that grunting/growling technique too a high pitched scream in the same breath is beyond most human's capability

Like ADD said, it's an acquired taste. I believe it fits perfectly with his music. "Don't Break the Oath" by Mercyful Fate is one of the greatest metal albums ever and his voice is in perfect harmony with the music on that album. Mr. Crash, you hear a girlish falsetto. I hear a creepy tone to devilish music and it's pretty dam tough to do.

Neither is Ashley Simpson warbling some off kilter horseshit and having the engineer fix it on the computer. At least the grunts and screams are standing on their own for better or for worse.

Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power is one that always stands out for me. I love Fear Factory Demanufacture but that is more because I like their sound. They have a few awesome songs on there but then also some skippable ones. I heard It's So Easy for the first time in years the other day and it reminded me how great Appetite for Destruction was.

Far Beyond Driven? Seriously? That's like the fourth best Pantera album.

True. That album charted #1 based on the rabid anticipation built by Vulgar. This from a guy who had me and the wife be introduced at the wedding reception to the beginning of I'm Broken (before the screaming started so no white trash). It actually went over very well - even with my 99% non metal friends. I think the bridal party came out to Breathe by Prodigy. Needed something with some energy.

Far Beyond Driven? Seriously? That's like the fourth best Pantera album.

This album represents a time when I was really getting into heavy music. This album was a step away from the direction that other metal bands were going in at the time. While it might not be the most influential album of all time to most people, it was very experimental and heavy. Definitely a step away from what they had done previously. Notable songs on the album that kick ass: Strength Beyond Strength, Use My Third Arm, 5 Minutes Alone, altough there is not a bad song on the album. I went to a lot of Pantera concerts during this era as well. For those reasons it just holds a high rank on my list of great albums.

I suppose if it holds personal relevance for you. I just think Vulgar Display and Trendkill are much more accomplished records, and that Cowboys from Hell is a great raw metal record. I admit that I was a bit disappointed in Trendkill. Not that I dislike it at all, because there are some bad ass songs like 10's, Floods and Suicide Note Pt. 2, but the album is my least favorite next to RTS. I remember being at the Pantera concert in downtown Fort Worth, New Years Eve 1995 when they debuted the first song off of Trendkill. It was the title track. I remember thinking, woah, this is going to be some heavy shit! After I got the album, I just never got into it as much as the first three. But hey, props regardless brother - Pantera FTW!!

Signals is better than the last two on your list.
"Subdivisions" alone is better than the last two on that list.

I just never liked their post-Pictures, pre-Snakes era. They made like eight straight crappy albums. Signals is the best of a bad bunch.

But just recently bought Arden Kaywin's new album "the elephant in the room" and think that is really great as well

OK Computer is the perfect album, and will go down in history as such. Since that appears to be a really popular choice, I'm going to throw Agaetis Byrjun by Sigur Ros out there. It's what I imagine music would sound like in heaven.

Surely Radioheads best album was The Bends? Now that is a perfect album, each track compliments each other like a room full of stereotypical chivalrous English butlers complimenting the gerth of sirs knob?

Ænima bro. Anemia is a hemoglobin deficiency....

I agree with you that the live versions of those songs are better. Pushit is my favorite Tool song and at 13 minutes long, it's still all good. Their cover of No Quarter is better than the original version by Led Zeppelin... flame away.
