Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says the plane carrying six people was departing shortly before midnight Friday when air traffic controllers reporting seeing sparks.
She said the plane went off the runway and crashed on a nearby road.

I'd say this is pop culture because most people would be going, "Who?" And even if they know who he is they are still going, "So?" For humanitarian reasons I hope he survives, but as a music lover I hope he can't ever make music again.
What is it with musicians and plane crashes, it seems to happen once every 3 years or so that a reasonably famous one buys the farm in one.

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Hours after performing for thousands of South Carolina college students, former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and celebrity DJ AM were critically injured in a fiery Learjet crash that killed four people, authorities said Saturday.
Officials said the plane carrying six people was departing shortly before midnight Friday when air traffic controllers reporting seeing sparks. The plane hurtled off the end of a runway and crashed through antennas and a fence. It came to rest on an embankment across a five-lane highway and was engulfed in flames, said Debbie Hersman, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board.
Barker and DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, were in critical condition at a burn center in Augusta, Ga., about 75 miles southwest of Columbia, hospital spokeswoman Beth Frits said.
Two other passengers — Chris Baker, 29, of Studio City, Calif., and Charles Still, 25, of Los Angeles — died, as did pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills, Calif., and co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsbad, according to the county coroner. Baker was an assistant to Barker and Still was a security guard for the musician.
The plane was headed for Van Nuys, Calif. It is owned by Global Exec Aviation, a California-based charter company, and was certified to operate last year, Hersman said. The company said it had no immediate comment.
At the crash site Saturday, the air was still heavy with the odor of jet fuel. A trail of black soot led off a runway. The nose of the aircraft was gone and the roof was missing from two-thirds of the charred plane.
"It's absolutely terrible and tragic," Columbia Mayor Bob Coble said.

This is awful. I really feel for them all. Say what you will about their music, but getting burned up, especially with enough fuel to get them to CA on board, has got to be gruesome.
Look on the bright side. If it had only been one of them burned, they wouldn't match on stage as well as they do now.

I lol'd when I got to this part
The MC, a cousin of Snoop Dogg who made his debut on Dr. Dre's 1992 album The Chronic before signing with Death Row Records, was first felled by a stroke on Dec. 19, leaving him partially paralyzed.
Dogg had continued his recovery in physical therapy, but still relied on the use of a wheelchair.
"He was making excellent progress with his recovery from the first stroke," said McGrew. "This is an unfortunate setback. We welcome all prayers in support of Nate's recovery but we would appreciate privacy."
The rapper's condition will undoubtedly force a Compton judge to postpone a Sept. 24 hearing in which Dogg faces felony charges for threatening and stalking his estranged wife

Barker is a douche, but he was actually a decent drummer.
Also, Blink 182 was good for what they were. They were a pop punk band, they wrote pop punk songs. If you don't enjoy that type of music fine, but for what they were they had some pretty good songs.
Damnit is a classic.
Also, his work with the Transplants is pretty good.

being pretty damn close to marrying a guy that flies those things for a living, i would love to know what the hell happened
Just speculation on my part, but I would guess that they had a mechanical failure (ie, tire blow on takeoff, engine failure, etc), followed by pilot error (and, I may be totally wrong on this).
But, Lear's are fast airplanes.
It was more than likely full of fuel, heading on a cross country trip, and full of passengers. Columbia's runway isn't the longest one in the world.
There are decision speeds during takeoff that pilots must follow, and sometimes in fast airplanes like Lear's, have to be made in split seconds.
For example, there is one speed you calculate before takeoff based on the aircraft loaded weight, runway length, density altitude that day, etc, for an aborted takeoff that, lets say (for sake of arguement) was 80mph (V1).
So, procedurally, if you have a mechanical failure at 80mph or below, on your takeoff roll, you immediately hit the brakes and the thrust reversers, and abort the takeoff.
If you do everything correctly, you should be able to stop the aircraft safely before running out of runway.
There's also a second decision speed known as (V2), and lets says it was calculated that day for 90mph. At this speed, when you reach 90mph, your commited to takeoff the airplane no matter what (because there's no way you're gonna get it stopped in time before you run out of runway).
So, when you hit 90mph (even if your engine is engulfed in flames), you takeoff, then begin procedures for putting out the fire and landing.
There is a small window between V1 and V2, where if you happen to have a mechanical, you either keep accelerating to V2 and takeoff, or hit the binders, and hope like hell you stop before you run out of asphalt!
My guess (and, again, it's just a guess), is that something happened in that critical window, and the pilot tried to abort the takeoff and ran it off the end of the runway.
Whatever the case, it was a tragedy, and lives were lost, which is unfortunate.
As far as worrying about you future husband's career choice, statistics show that his drive to the airport is far more risky than the flights he fly's.
Just my $0.02.

Update:
www.msnbc.msn.com (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27322028/)
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The pilots of a doomed Learjet that crashed while hurtling down a runway, killing four people in South Carolina, should have lifted off the runway rather than try to abort the takeoff, aviation experts said Wednesday.
The plane’s speed reached a point of no return and couldn’t safely stop after the crew reported hearing a suspected tire blowout, the experts said.
“Technically, they probably should have continued the takeoff because they were at a point at which they were not going to be able to stop on the remaining runway,” Eric Doten told The Associated Press after federal investigators on Wednesday issued a preliminary report on the crash that happened just before midnight Sept. 19.
Former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and celebrity disc jockey DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, were severely burned in the crash, but have been released from the hospital and are expected to fully recover. Two of the musicians’ close friends and the plane’s pilot and co-pilot were killed when it shot off the end of the runway.
In the report issued Wednesday, National Transportation Safety Board officials said the plane was traveling 156 mph just before the pilots tried to abort the takeoff. At that speed, the pilots had issued the “V1 speed callout,” which means the plane has reached the point where it has to takeoff, the experts said.
“At V1, you’re committed to taking off, so, there’s no more decision to be made,” said Bob Baron, president of The Aviation Consulting Group, a Myrtle Beach-based safety consulting company. “The basic premise is that, at V1 or above, you’re trained to go flying, whether you like it or not.”
There was very little rubber left on the jet’s wheels, and the brakes were severely damaged when the plane crashed, the NTSB report said. Had the pilots lifted off, they would have had to evaluate any possible tire damage and burn fuel to reduce the plane’s weight before landing, Baron said.
“Airplanes land with gear and tire problems all the time, and typically, the people in the airplane will walk away from it,” he said.
