J.J. Abrams Gets Ready To Rumble
Working on an earthquake-based movie
]J.J. Abrams is set to make the earth move.

The hugely prolific writer-producer-director may be still slaving away on his remake of Star Trek (not to mention his TV shows, Lost and Fringe), but that hasn’t stopped him lining up a major new movie which will revolve around a major earthquake hitting a city.

We’d like to think that Abrams, who will team with David Seltzer (who wrote the screenplay for The Omen), was inspired by the recent 5.4 quake that rocked Los Angeles (and had this Empire writer hanging onto his newly-purchased TV for grim life), but he’s probably been working on this for months.

But Universal, the studio that’s bankrolling the project, is hopeful that Abrams will give earthquakes the same spin as he did with monster movies for Cloverfield.

As with that movie, this earthquake flick will focus on relationships, with the big special effects taking a backseat (although they’ll doubtless be there with bells on). But precious little else is known about this, other than that Abrams merely intends to produce the movie, along with Bryan Burk and Sherryl Clark.

But we’re looking forward to this for a couple of reasons: one, with today’s advances in special effects, a movie revolving around a major earthquake has plenty of potential for awe-inspiring and indeed terrifying visuals. Earthquake, the 1974 Chuck Heston that saw L.A. torn apart by a Big One (and of which this movie is emphatically not a remake), did pretty well with models. CG will make the scope even bigger, as Roland Emmerich’s 2012 – in which Los Angeles again experiences a Richter Scale-breaking event – should demonstrate.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Go see it for the fact that Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz make out in it, see if Javier Bardem can be romantic after No Country for Old Men, and b/c it's a Woody Allen movie.

George Miller off Justice League, might be directing Green Lantern
http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5319&Itemid=99

The IESB has an early look at Greg Berlanti's The Green Lantern plus updates on George Miller's Justice League of America.

A few years ago, we reviewed the GL script Robert Smigel wrote with comedian Jack Black in mind -- D.C. and Warner Bros. wisely decided against going down that route, maybe we had something to do with that when we shit all over it, read our review here (http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=122&Itemid=99).

But, there has been quite of bit of buzz lately coming from Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green's newest take on the Green Lantern and I managed to find a copy in my hands.

Let me start off with saying that within just reading the first few pages, I knew Berlanti, Guggenheim and Green had gotten the character right.

I don't want to do a traditional script review, instead I want to give IESB readers more of a sense of the story (http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5319&Itemid=99#) by going through some plot details and my thoughts on the screenplay. Wait a minute, that is a review. Let it begin...

It starts off with the revelation of Oa and The Central Battery with a voice over narration explaining that 1) there are extraterrestrials that protect the universe, 2) they have power rings, 3) there are thousands of Green Lanterns and 4) one of us has become one of them.

We go from one part of the universe to another and find ourselves in a familiar Solar System…our own.

Before I share some of the details let's do a quick character list of those we will see in the movie (http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5319&Itemid=99#) if this script gets the "green" light.

Martin Jordan
Hal Jordan/Green Lantern
Thomas Kalmuka
Carl Ferris
Carol Ferris
Kilowog
Tomar-Re
Abin Sur
Thaal Sinestro
The Guardians
Legion
Hector Hammond

A few cameos include a certain mild mannered reporter from the Daily Planet, a certain college football coach with the last name of Gardner (who we are promised in the script we will see more of in the second film (http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5319&Itemid=99#)) and loads of other characters sure to keep fanboys orgasmic throughout.

Back to the script - The story follows the traditional Hal Jordan/Green Lantern story lines to a certain degree including the battle between Legion and Abin Sur, Abin Sur's crash landing on Earth, as well as the choosing of Hal Jordan over Guy Gardner and Clark Kent.

Parts are straight out of the Emerald Dawn series including Jordan's simulator being ripped out of the training center and flown to a dying Abin Sur and Hal Jordan going to Oa to help defeat Legion.

The major difference is in the Sinestro character arch. I don't want to give too much away but the writers were very careful to stay true to the character without blowing their load on the first film.

The other difference is also introducing Hector Hammond into the story line and making him the big threat to Earth or Gaia if you prefer.

From the first major beat of the story - that is sure to bring a tear - to the revelations at the end of the movie that easily set up prequels as well as sequels this script has it all. Also, unlike other recent superhero movies (http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5319&Itemid=99#), this Green Lantern story has science fiction elements such as visiting other planets and major space battles.

It's a quick read and is a mere 109 pages but is action packed from the beginning to end. It has the potential to be bigger than Iron Man or maybe even The Dark Knight.

The script, if greenlit, is a sure-fire hit for fan boys, but in scale it's big, VERY big, and we are hearing rumors that it may be too big for the director (http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5319&Itemid=99#) currently attached, Greg Berlanti.

But who would the studio trust to take on a franchise of this size?

First, let me say that the studio execs love this GL script, they really dig it - and get it which is always important - and word is they are prepared to spend a pretty penny.

Changing gears for a sec, let's see what's currently going on with Justice League of America. Last week there were reports that the movie is finally moving forward. Guess what - that's not what we heard.

IESB found out the complete opposite from various sources at WB -- the movie will not move forward in its current incarnation and a lot has to do with the success of The Dark Knight. Warner Bros. is not willing to risk pissing off Christopher Nolan or Christian Bale and their intent would be to move forward with a third Batman film instead of introducing another Batman in a JLA film.

Officially WB is stating that Justice League of America is on hold due to the potential SAG strike. We have been advised from various sources that the truth is that George Miller has been pulled off the project. We have contacted all parties involved including Kennedy/Miller and other producers (http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5319&Itemid=99#) but they have declined to comment at this time.

So does that mean that Miller is out of a job? Nope, we have been told that some execs over at Warner Bros. would like Miller to take over The Green Lantern project. Any truth to the rumor? Only time will tell but one thing is certain in my purest fan boy opinion - this script totally kicks ass!

Harry Potter 6 Pushed Back to Summer '09!
Source: ComingSoon.net
August 14, 2008

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=11750) has been pushed back from November 21, 2008 to July 17, 2009.

The studio's Alan Horn said the move was due to "repercussions of the writers' strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films -- changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of. We agreed the best strategy was to move 'Half-Blood Prince' to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tent pole release for mid-summer."

Universal Pictures' Land of the Lost (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=38126) is also scheduled for a July 17, 2009 release date. We'll have to see if the studio will keep the date now facing the juggernaut franchise.

‘Evil Dead 4’ Won’t Rely On Younger Sidekick, Says Bruce Campbell (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/08/14/evil-dead-4-wont-rely-on-younger-sidekick-says-bruce-campbell/)

Published by Shawn Adler (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/author/shawnadler/) on Thursday, August 14, 2008 at 12:11 pm.
http://www.mtv.com/shared/promoimages/movies/c/campbell_bruce/140x105.jpg

Two weeks ago, director Sam Raimi shocked Comic-Con with a declaration that “Evil Dead” would rise again (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/07/28/will-the-evil-dead-rise-again-sam-raimi-says-yes/). So when can we start salivating with anticipation?
“When he’s ready, I’m ready,” star Bruce Campbell told MTV News.
While nothing remains written or planned, Campbell and Raimi have actually discussed the long-anticipated movie at length, the man with the million dollar chin insisted, saying that they already have a basic idea of where to take Ash, the poor S-Mart clerk who’s already narrowly survived three adventures - the last of which, “Army of Darkness,” got released in 1992.
Part of that plan, naturally, involves accounting for the fact that the last “Evil Dead” movie got released in 1992.
“Sam gets to hide behind the camera. I can’t. But I think he’s planning on factoring that in,” Campbell revealed. “As like a major factor. It’d be a major liability, you know Ash runs out of breath or his back goes out and [stuff] like that. I mean I just blew my hamstring fighting a stunt guy for ‘Burn Notice,’ the show that I’m doing now. So there’s a little bit of truth to all of that!”
An older Ash? Why not, Campbell asked, especially given that this has truly been the year of the aging action star, what with movies like “Live Free or Die Hard” and “Indiana Jones” showcasing senior citizen commandos.
About those two movies though while we’re talking about them – you know those annoying characters played by Shia LaBeouf and Justin Long? The young sidekick character? Yeah, not so much gonna happen in “Evil Dead,” Campbell declared.
“I think the audience would be insulted if you did, because then you feel this obvious pressure to appeal,” he said. “The beauty of the ‘Evil Dead’ movies is that you’re only appealing to one demographic and that’s people who like horror movies. And you just have to please them. You don’t have to appeal to the studio. You’re already pleasing them by giving them part 4.”
Of course, for all his declarations, everything is just “smoke and mirrors at this point,” the actor said jokingly. But is there anything definitive he can tell us about “Evil Dead 4”?
“Nobody knows anything,” he said. “I mean if we were really smart [though], we’d go back to a handheld movie and shoot it in 16mm and find someplace in the middle of nowhere. And have a crew of 10 people. If we were smart.”

What do you think of Campbell’s thoughts on “Evil Dead 4”? Want an aging Ash? Should it be shot with a crew of 10 in the middle of nowhere? This is my boomstick – below are your comments.

Wes Anderson first illustrated his lovingly detailed, slightly surreal cinematic vision in this witty and warm portrait of three young middle-class misfits. Fresh out of a mental hospital, gentle Anthony (Luke Wilson) finds himself once again embroiled in the machinations of his best friend, elaborate schemer Dignan (Owen Wilson). With the aid of getaway driver Bob (Robert Musgrave), they develop a needlessly complex, mildly successful plan to rob a small bookstore—then go “on the lam.” Also featuring Lumi Cavazos as Inez, the South American housekeeper Anthony falls in love with, and James Caan as local thief extraordinaire Mr. Henry, Bottle Rocket is a charming, hilarious, affectionate look at the folly of dreamers. Shot against radiant southwestern backdrops, it’s the film that put Anderson and the Wilson brothers on the map.

TMNT to return...in LIVE ACTION.

http://movies.ign.com/articles/907/907155p1.html

"September 2, 2008 - Sequel talk has been swirling ever since the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles returned to the silver screen last year in the computer-animated feature TNMT. Fans had expected the follow-up to also be CG-animated, but Playmate Toys, the official license holder of the Ninja Turtles, declared in July that a live-action sequel was in the works for a 2010 release.

Playmate later updated their official site and dropped the "live-action" part of the announcement. According to TMNT director Kevin Eastman, however, a live-action sequel is still the plan.

In a posting at the Heavy Metal Forum, Eastman revealed, "Although the CGI film did well enough to warrant a sequel, there has been much talk between Imagi and Warners to do a better 're-invention' (newest Hollywood buzzword) of the TMNT's, in a live action film -- like what was done with Batman. Back to basics, back to the origin and the intro of the Shredder, etc."

Eastman added that "there have been talks, trips to Northampton to talk to Mr Laird, and discussions with the original 'first' TMNT film director Steve Barron to come back and do it right -- but no official word yet."

Fuck yeah.

Guillermo Del Toro booked until 2017--directing the Hobbit trilogy, then Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Slaughterhouse Five, and a movie about Charles Dickens

Sheesh.

http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=23174

For today there came an announcement that Del Toro has committed his filmmaking future – once he’s done with The Hobbit, of course, by 2012 – to Universal, with advanced plans for him to direct four movies for the studio up to 2017.

The movies in question all have a literary bent, given that they’re each based on novels. And they are:

* Frankenstein, which we’ve known for a while that the Mexican director has been circling. Universal see this as one of their franchise big guns, following the revival of The Wolfman (which Del Toro came this close to directing)
* Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde, based on the Robert Louis Stevenson novel. This is prime, prime Guillermo territory.
* Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five, the time-spanning WWII-meets-sci-fi novel (which is, of course, the barest capsule description of that novel that you could ever wish to see).
* Dan Simmons’ forthcoming novel, Drood, which blends fact and fiction in telling the dark tale of the last days of Charles Dickens. We haven’t read it yet as it’s not published until February, but Simmons is a wonderful writer and, judging from the plot description, this could well be a Victorian take on The Dark Half. Possibly.

So, there you go. And that’s not even counting the movies that Del Toro is down to produce for Universal, including Hater and Crimson Peak.

And then, still to be placed somewhere in his schedule, is his pet project, the movie he’s been longing to make since he was a wee bairn: H.P. Lovecraft’s At The Mountains Of Madness. All these projects could end up not happening, though. I think Del Toro had like 5 or so movies lined up at Warner Bros, and none of those ever happened.

It'd be cool to see Frankenstein make a comeback. Especially after that weird-ass, crappy Robert Deniro version from the 90's.

Spider-Man 4 & 5 bringing back Maguire, Raimi and Snaggletooth

http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/exclusive-sony-sets-sam-raimi-studio-may-shoot-4-and-5-at-same-time/

It's time to end once and for all the rampant speculation. Sony doesn't want any info to leak but I'm told that both star Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi will be returning to make Zodiac screenwriter Jamie Vanderbilt's script of Spider-Man 4. Sources tell me that Sony has recently locked in both veterans of Spider-Man 1 through 3. And I do mean recently because just a few weeks ago sources told me that Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal was openly discussing Tobey's potential replacements with various Hollywood agents because Tobey was hanging tough about a deal. "She was looking around to cover herself because Sony wanted him badly and Tobey wasn't sure he wanted to do it," an insider explained to me. There's no deal yet for Kirsten Dunst but Mary Jane Watson will be in the movie again. I'm told Sony "would never recast her" despite her rehab problems. But expect another gal part, too.
Gone is the black costume from Spidey 3, even though "dark" is all the rage in superhero movies right now given the enormous success of The Dark Knight. But I'm told the filmmakers won't be borrowing from the latest Batman installment because "Spider-Man is its own thing," one insider tells me. "Sam Raimi made the first serious superhero movie, and others followed. The difference between Spider-Man and Batman is that Batman is duelling with a dark side of himself, and that's not what Peter Parker's struggle is. Peter Parker has no dark side himself. In Spider-Man 3 it was the black costume. Peter Parker's struggle is about sacrifice."
Sony is taking its time officially hiring the movie's villain since principal photography doesn't start on Spider-Man 4 until next fall because of the recently postponed May 2011 release. I am told, however, that "once you find out who the villain is, you'll know who's playing it." That should lead to speculation that Dylan Baker's character of Dr. Curt Connors will ultimately turn into The Lizard as he did in the comic books. There's one other character that's been set up but is a real longshot -- Daniel Gillies, who plays John Jameson, the astronaut fiance of Mary Jane in Spider-Man 2. In the comics he becomes the villain Man-Wolf. Raimi has said in the past that he wants the best actors to play the villains in the movie, not necessarily the most famous.
I'm also told that, right now, the studio is trying to figure out if it can feasibly shoot Spider-Man 4 and 5 at the same time because doing that is so cost effective and "it wasn't so easy to get everybody back together".
Meanwhile, Sony is moving forward on its Spider-Man Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge of U2 to be directed by Julie Taymor, the Tony Award-winning director of The Lion King. I'm still in a state of shock that Amy Pascal and Julie Taymor are working together again after the knock-down, drag-out fights (http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/why-did-you-hire-her-in-the-1st-place-details-on-taymor-vs-roth-missing-from-nyt/) they had over Sony/Revolution's Across The Universe. This is one of those showbiz moments when the Hollywood maxim, "I'll never work with you again until I need you", comes true.
And Sony has hired a pair of screenwriters to get going on the Spider-Man 3 spinoff movie Venom. Given that comic book artist/writer and action figure maker, Todd McFarlane, who is one of the creators of the Marvel villain, doesn't think a Venom movie could do well with a villain as the central character, my sources think Sony should let Topher Grace, even though he was blown up at the end of Spider-Man 3 (yet a portion of the Venom costume survived), stay in the role because the likeable actor could be a a sympathetic evildoer.
Meanwhile, you can snag a walk-on role on the movie via an eBay auction (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180282289817) that ends at 7 PM PDT today. That's an hour before the broadcast networks ABC, CBS and NBC collaborate to air a historic, live and commercial-free television event, Stand Up To Cancer. Yes, Sony is allowing the charity to sell off the "Spider-Man 4 VIP Experience" which includes: a visit to the set of Spider-Man 4 (one shooting day, location of visit will be determined by Sony Pictures based on scheduling of visit), a meet-and-greet with the cast (1 hour), a walk-on/extra role in the film for the auction winner only (role and length of screen time to be determined by Sony Pictures), a trip to the New York premiere (location of U.S. premiere may be changed at Sony Pictures’ discretion), designer outfits to wear to premiere for winner and guest from top designers (designers to be chosen by Sony Pictures; winner and guest may keep the outfits; winner and guest will walk the premiere’s red carpet).

I can't believe they're actually bringing her back. Fuck this franchise.

Will Smith "in the running" for Captain America?

http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/09/08/rumored-will-smith-offered-captain-america/

Not much to go on, but during an interview with MTV (http://splashpage.mtv.com/2008/09/08/exclusive-is-will-smith-the-new-captain-america/), actor Derek Luke (Miracle at St. Anna) said that “[Marvel] offered Will Smith Captain America” and added that “it just shows you how times have changed.” Other actors recently rumored for the Marvel character include Matthew McConaughey (thankfully, not happening) and Brad Pitt (who’s also been mentioned for Thor).
Entitled The First Avenger: Captain America and set for a May 6th, 2011 release—just weeks before The Avengers—Marvel Studios President of Production, Kevin Feige, confirmed (http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/05/21/captain-america-to-be-set-in-world-war-ii/) over the summer that the film will be a WWII period epic. On a recent /Filmcast, I was the only one who thought this movie would not underperform at the box office, believing it possessed similar potential to Iron Man. And compared to Superman—a character that’s even more alien in the context of today’s blockbusters and trendy manchild masculinity—Captain America seems like a smarter cinematic outlet to address the current political climate and state of the nation for a wide audience.

As for Smith in the role, I think it could work. He has the iconic stature down, and is generally seen as an all-American everyman a la Tom Hanks. Of course, this is where I’m supposed to blabber on about race and if it would be accepted by the mainstream, but personally, I think it’s lame and pointless to do so. “It just shows you how times have changed.” Maybe if you’re 30+, but I disagree with that statement per casting a film like this. I grew up watching this dude on TV after school (I’m not doing the theme song, don’t worry). Smith is one of the most successful actors of all time, why would he not be up for the part? Because it’s not Black Panther or a Green Lantern or Blade or an alcoholic superhero who flies? Laughable.

And now, for the obvious reaction:

I saw the evil dead musical off Broadway a couple of years ago. We sat in the second row, which was part of the splash zone and were warned that we may get hit with fake blood. It was pretty good.

Screw Evil Dead remakes....let's just do the musical!

Anyone who hasn't heard the soundtrack to the musical should check it out. It's pretty fucking awesome.

I have faith that any movie Seth Rogan is in will be funny and shockingly candid. He always seems to play a 'stream of consciousness" character, and it always works.

I'm hoping he won't have a Will Ferrel mid-career period where he starts trying new shit and falls flat before successfully rebounding to what made him good in the first place.

Mickey Rourke makes comeback from rough times

http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/SHOWBIZ/Movies/09/16/film.mickey.rourke.ap/art.rourke.ap.jpg

TORONTO, Ontario (AP) -- Mickey Rourke's character in "The Wrestler" describes himself as a broken-down slab of meat, a man who's alone and deserves to be.

Mickey Rourke says that he put himself and others "through a lot of hell" in the '80s and '90s.

It's a striking echo of how Rourke discusses his real life, the way he squandered his early potential with bad-boy behavior that left him largely unemployable in Hollywood save for roles as heavies that have been his main screen work the last two decades.

The story of a comeback attempt by a former wrestling golden boy fallen on hard times, "The Wrestler" parallels Rourke's own return to the sort of critical acclaim he once earned with such films as "Diner," "Rumble Fish" and "Barfly."

"I ruined that myself," Rourke said in an interview with The Associated Press at the Toronto International Film Festival, where "The Wrestler" screened. "I wasn't ready at that time. There were some broken pieces I didn't know how to fix that made me behave a certain way. I wasn't knowledgeable enough for many, many years to understand or want to accept the fact that the movie business was political, and that it's a business. You know, coming out of the Actors Studio, I thought it was just about acting, and I knew I could do that. And I knew I could do that better than most people.

"That's what I carried around, and I was very wrong. Very wrong, very immature, very uninformed, very uneducated about that. I wish I knew differently, because I put myself and a lot of other people through a lot of hell that I regret."

In 1994, Rourke was accused of spousal abuse against his wife at the time, actress Carre Otis. Charges later were dropped after prosecutors were unable to get Otis to testify.

An amateur boxer in the 1970s, Rourke went pro in the early 1990s, a time when his movie career had dried up.

In the years since, Rourke has had occasional success in supporting roles, notably his turn as a colossus of a man on a vengeful rampage in "Sin City."

"The Wrestler" marks the first time in ages anyone has entrusted Rourke with a lead role, let alone a challenging, sympathetic one. Director Darren Aronofsky fought to cast Rourke, whom potential financial backers did not want in the film.

Aronofsky only got his way by paring the film down to a $6 million budget, small change by Hollywood standards.

The payoff already has been big. "The Wrestler" won top honors at the Venice Film Festival last weekend and was picked up for U.S. distribution at Toronto this week by Fox Searchlight, which plans to release it in December, the heart of Academy Awards season.

Rourke, who turns 52 on Sept. 16, is getting solid Oscar buzz for "The Wrestler."

"There's an incredibly honest performance in the film, and the fact that people are reacting is not surprising to me," said Aronofsky, whose previous films include "Pi" and "Requiem for a Dream." "We all knew how great and talented he was. He just hasn't had the opportunity to show the world for a while.

"I'm just honored literally to be the guy who was lucky enough to get Mickey at the place and time in his life when he was ready to open up once again to the world."

"The Wrestler" stars Rourke as Randy "The Ram" Robinson, a giant in the ring who played Madison Square Garden 20 years earlier but now scrabbles by on matches in high school gyms and community centers. A rematch of his most-famous bout offers a chance to reclaim former glory.

Meantime, he makes fumbling efforts to patch things up with his estranged daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) and romance a reluctant stripper (Marisa Tomei) while trying to keep his deteriorating body in form with steroids and tanning salons.

Doing twice-a-day weightlifting sessions and eating six meals daily for six months, Rourke packed on 40 pounds of muscle for the role.

His mental regimen has been a marathon by comparison: 13 years seeing a therapist, which he had resisted for a long time.

"I didn't think anything was wrong with me. I thought it was everybody else," Rourke said. "And there was a lot wrong with me, but it had to do with old stuff from my childhood that I had a lot of shame about. I'm a very proud man. Because I didn't want to feel shame, it was easier to manifest that into anger and a hardness, and then it eventually got too hard, and I realized that when I lost everything.

"I mean, everything. Not just my movie career. Then you're alone," said Rourke, adding that he remains in therapy. "I still have to work on it every day, because the little guy with the hatchet still lives inside of me, and he's sleeping now. I don't want him to ever wake up again."

Mass Effect Movie?

Here's your big-game-franchise-being-turned-into-a-movie story of the day--but for once, it's a deal I actually want to be optimistic about. Variety's Cut Scene blog (http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2008/09/mass-effect-mov.html) says EA has optioned Mass Effect (http://www.giantbomb.com/mass-effect/61-16909/) film rights to Avi Arad (http://www.giantbomb.com/avi-arad/72-74137/), the prolific producer and former Marvel Comics movie guy who once embarked on a quest to put at least one film in theaters based on every single Marvel property ever conceived. (Seriously, look at the guy's credits on IMDB.) Arad was a key player on the X-Mens, Spider-Mans, and Iron Mans of the world, so on the Hollywood side I want to believe this project has at least a dim hope of not sucking.Link (http://www.giantbomb.com/news/grab-the-popcorn-mass-effect-movie-en-route/262/)

In Disney Future with Johnny Depp

Source: ComingSoon.net, Heather Newgen
September 25, 2008

http://comingsoon.net/nextraimages/depppirates4.jpgFor the sake of sanity, we're compiling all of the Johnny Depp stories that have come out of Disney Studios' presentation at the Kodak Theatre earlier today including the previously unreported announcement that Depp would be returning as Captain Jack Sparrow for Pirates of the Caribbean 4, but first, he'll be reteaming with director Tim Burton to play the Mad Hatter in the motion-capture animated Alice in Wonderland (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=39384) and playing Tonto in The Lone Ranger (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=43459). Obviously, Disney and Johnny Depp's next few years will be closely linked with these three projects in development.

Below, you can find the two previous reports posted earlier today with links to the original stories for anyone who wants to continue commenting there:

During Disney's preview today in Hollywood, the studio questioned who could possibly play the titular character in its upcoming feature The Lone Ranger (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=43459).

With that, Disney rolled out the USC marching band to come down and play the Ranger's theme song. This was followed by an appearance by Depp himself who took to the stage in full Captain Jack Sparrow attire...wearing The Lone Ranger's mask.

According to our Disney reps, Depp is officially signed to play Tonto and not the Lone Ranger as initially implied.

The Lone Ranger (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=43459), said to be an origin story, is written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio.

Tonto? Thats dumb.

But it seems Depp will be too busy to be playing the Riddler in any Batman/Dark Knight sequel.

Zack & Miri, The Wrestler have no distributor.

MGM Showing First Signs Of Weinstein Breakup

For the past three years, The Weinstein Company has used MGM as the distributor for many of its films. The agreement, which has been described as "acrimonious" in the past and often involved Harvey Weinstein's studio calling the shots, expires in January, and MGM has already begun taking its name and logo off of the remaining films covered by the deal. On Monday, MGM said that they were no longer distributing the following films on TWC's 2008 slate: Zack and Miri Make A Porno, Oscar contender The Road, Killshot, Fanboys, Crossing Over and Shanghai. As a result, MGM's logo has disappeared from advertising materials for Zack and Miri (http://www.businesssheet.com/2008/9/-zack-and-miri-make-mgm-disappear)and the front of the film itself. MGM will still distribute TWC's Soul Men, slated for release in November.

Seriously, America, grow a pair

LOS ANGELES — Kevin Smith made a movie with such a bothersome title he cannot even place ads for it in some places.

Some newspaper, TV and outdoor ads for Smith's comedy "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" have been rejected because of their content or the five-letter word that ends the title, said Gary Faber, head of marketing for the Weinstein Co., which is releasing the film.

Among those refusing to carry ads are about 15 newspapers and several TV stations and cable channels, Faber said. Commercials for the film during Los Angeles Dodgers games on Fox Sports were dropped at the team's request after some viewers complained, said Dodgers spokesman Josh Rawitch.

One complaint came from a man watching a game in September with his young son, who did not understand a suicide-squeeze bunt the Dodgers tried, Rawitch said.

"He was explaining to his son what a squeeze bunt was. Commercial break, the ad comes on, and the kid asks, `Dad, what does porno mean?'" Rawitch said. "Dodgers baseball has always been about family, and we've always been sensitive to the type of advertising that runs on our games."

The city of Philadelphia refused "Zack and Miri" posters at bus stops. Similar posters at Boston bus stops have drawn complaints from a child-development expert who said they are inappropriate for children.

Smith found it ironic that the posters have been a problem. Some playfully risque ads with images of "Zack and Miri" stars Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks were forbidden by the Motion Picture Association of America, which called the ads "highly sexually suggestive and not suitable for general audiences."

So Weinstein came up with posters using stick figures to represent the actors.

"The whole idea was, our hands were so tied on all previous entries we'd given them that this ad was meant to be the innocuous one that would get approved everywhere," Smith said.

Rina Cutler, Philadelphia deputy mayor for transportation, said the stick-figure posters were cute and clever but unacceptable for bus shelters where schoolchildren would see the word "porno."

"If they want to call the movie `Zack and Miri,' that's fine, but Zack and Miri cannot make a porno on my bus shelters," Cutler said.

Opening Oct. 31, "Zack and Miri" features Rogen and Banks as platonic best buddies and roommates who decide to make their own skin flick to dig themselves out of debt.

Diane Levin, an education professor specializing in child development at Boston's Wheelock College, said the posters at city bus stops send a message to children that working in the porn industry is an acceptable occupation.

"It's drawing attention to a movie which is mainstreaming and normalizing pornography, saying if you need money, this is what you do," said Levin, co-author of "So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids."

The stick-figure images are especially appealing to youngsters, since "stick figures are something for children," she said.

Weinstein marketing boss Faber countered: "It's a comedy. It's a joke. We're not advertising a porno. It's not a porno. The word `porno,' it's not supposed to turn you on. It's supposed to make you laugh."

The ratings board of the MPAA initially slapped "Zack and Miri" with an NC-17 rating, a box-office kiss of death because audiences view such films as explicit adult-only flicks. Smith appealed and talked the film down to an R rating.

Faber said the company has been able to place its ads in most of the outlets it has approached. For newspapers that rejected them because of the word "porno," Weinstein might play around with variations that exclude the title, he said.

The company developed a version of the stick-figure poster without the film's name, bearing the slogan, "Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks made a movie so outrageous that we can't even tell you the title."

Sam Raimi (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/contributor/1800018604) and Tobey Maguire (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/contributor/1800019261) recently put to end months of gossip and signed on the dotted line for a fourth and fifth installment of "Spider-Man." The only principle not yet confirmed for the wildly successful franchise is Kirsten Dunst (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/contributor/1800018860) as Mary Jane Watson, though she's made recent statements that she wants to continue with the series. "Kirsten, I'd love to work with her again," Raimi told MTV's Splashpage (http://splashpage.mtv.com/2008/10/16/raimi-talks-spider-man-sequel-double-shoot-futures-of-dunst-the-lizard/): "I hope she'll be written into it. I couldn't imagine making one without her, and I think she's an important part of the movies." Maguire will, of course, return as Peter Parker though Raimi's exact connection to the production seems a bit more up in the air. "I'm really excited about Spider-Man, and I'm hoping to direct it," said Raimi. "I don't have a script yet, but production would start probably by March of 2010, I'm guessing. It sounds like a long time away, but we need a script first, and a lot of pre-production has to take place."
http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mo/pseudoblog_kirstendunst400.jpg There's also been much talk over whether or not the two movies will be shot back-to-back, like the "Lord of the Rings" films. As Raimi tells it, that too has yet to be determined. "It's [Sony Pictures Studio Head] Amy Pascal's decision. I don't think it has been decided yet, and she's the one that's really going to make that decision; I'm really curious myself."
Though there are no details on the story for Spider-Man 4 and 5, Raimi has hinted that the two movies will be connected. "If Tobey and me, and all the producers, like the story for two pictures and Amy wanted to do it, then we would do it. It just hasn't been written yet." Screenwriter James Vanderbilt (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/contributor/1808457814), who wrote Zodiac, has been signed on to write the script. Sony is still casting for the films' villain, though internet speculation has lead to talk of Dr. Curt Connors, played by Dylan Baker (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/contributor/1800019024), turning into The Lizard as he did in the comic series. There is even talk of Mary Jane's astronaut ex-fiancée John Jameson undergoing a transformation into Man-Wolf.
http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mo/pseudoblog_tobeymaguire400.jpg Raimi has admitted previously that shooting Spider-Man 3 was exhausting, so he's understandably daunted by the prospect of shooting two special-effects laden blockbusters at the same time. "It would be a real endurance test, probably only Peter Jackson knows how hard something like that would be."

Sam Mendes to Direct Preacher
http://www.slashfilm.com/wp/wp-content/images/preachertop-440x330.jpg (http://www.slashfilm.com/wp/wp-content/images/preachertop.jpg)
Good news for comic book fans. It looks like Preacher might finally make its way to the big screen. Columbia Pictures has picked up the rights to adapt the series into a feature film, with American Beauty/Road to Perdition director Sam Mendes attached to helm the project.
Preacher has a long history of false starts, despite having a loyal following among geek filmmakers. Originally set-up at Kevin Smith’s View Askew with a $25 million budget and James Marsden attached as the title character, the project fell into limbo and later found light as an HBO television series helmed by Mark Steven Johnson (fans were not happy about this one). When the one-hour series was first announced in November 2006, Pretty in Pink director Howard Deutch was named to helm the pilot episode. Robert Rodriguez was said to be one of the “many top-shelf directors interested in” directing an episode of the series. I have yet to read the series, but from what I understand, most fans saw it more as a television mini-series than a big screen movie.
The official plot synopsis from the graphic novel follows: “Here’s a book guaranteed to offend a bunch of people, not only because of its profuse profanity and graphic violence, but because it’s the epitome of iconoclasm. Like a brutal accident, you can’t watch but you can’t turn away. The story follows an ex-preacher man, Jesse, who has become disgusted with God’s abandoning of His responsibilities. So Jesse starts off into the wilds of Texas with his hitman girlfriend and new best friend (a vampire) to find God so that he can give Him a piece of his mind. Despite its superficial perversity, this book contains what may be the most moral character in mainstream comics. A cult hit in the making. Fans of Quentin Tarantino take note.”
The 75 issue comic book series was created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, and published between 1995 to 2000.

It's official, fanboy-hated "Rush Hour" and "X-Men: The Last Stand" helmer Brett Ratner is in final negotiations to direct the remake of "Conan the Barbarian" for Nu Image/Millennium and Lionsgate says The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i431ca797a370fbb291584be186e82c07).

Ratner hopped onboard the $85 million project, the first in what the studio hopes to be a long-running franchise, and at the same time will push forward on a forth installment of the Eddie Murphy franchise "Beverly Hills Cop".

Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly's "Conan" script adheres closer to Robert E. Howard's original 1930's pulp fiction stories about the famous warrior than the previous two 1980's films which turned Arnold Schwarzenegger into a star. The scribes are now doing a polish to include some last minute ideas from Ratner.

Producer Avi Lerner says "The story opens on the battlefield where Conan is born and tells the origin story that sets the stage for what will be the first of multiple films."

Ratner intends to keep the "very R-rated approach" of the material, with production to take place next year at Nu Image's Nu Boyana Studio in Bulgaria for an early 2010 release.

Well there goes all my hopes for a good Conan movie.

http://io9.com/5080722/beyonce-knowles-as-wonder-woman-yes-please

Now that we know that it's not Megan Fox (http://io9.com/5076321/megan-fox-isnt-wonder-woman), you may be thinking to yourself, well, who should be the movie Wonder Woman? One independent woman currently has her eyes on the role - and she's doing her best to put a ring on it before it's time to ring the alarm. Okay, I'll stop with the puns, but if she has anything to say about it, Beyonce Knowles will be cinema's first Diana Prince.
Talking to the LA Times about the role, Beyonce said,
After doing these roles that were so emotional I was thinking to myself, 'OK, I need to be a superhero.' Although, when you think about the psychology of the heroes in the films these days, they are still a lot of work, of course, and emotional. But there's also an action element that I would enjoy... I want to do a superhero movie and what would be better than Wonder Woman? It would be great. And it would be a very bold choice. A black Wonder Woman would be a powerful thing. It's time for that, right?
I have to admit, while it may take some rewriting of the mythos, I'd love to see a Beyonce take on the character - and she's enough of a star to move the movie out of the eternal pre-production limbo that it's been in for years now. Beyonce is taking the idea seriously; she's apparently already met with people at DC Comics and Warner Bros about the possibility, and she's even thinking about what it'll take to fill out those satin tights she'd have to wear to fight for our rights and the ol' red white and blue:
I would definitely have to keep it right for that costume. The way that Lynda Carter wore it, she was sooo fine. She was amazing. I saw her costume at the Met. Her waist was unbelievable. It was pretty crazy, actually, her proportions. But I love Wonder Woman and it'd be a dream come true to be that character. It sure would be handy to have that lasso. To make everybody tell the truth? I need that. It would come in very handy.
You know you want this to happen. If nothing else, think of how awesome the theme song would be.

Beyonce can't act. Shouldn't try to act. And sorry but Wonder woman is WHITE! Get over it. Sure there can be a black president but not a black Wonder Woman.

Stephen Norrington to Reinvent The Crow

Source: Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117997365.html?categoryid=13&cs=1)
December 15, 2008

Stephen Norrington has signed on to write and direct a reinvention of The Crow, based on the comic created by James O'Barr, says Variety.

Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media is negotiating with producer Ed Pressman to acquire the film franchise and finance the film.

Pressman produced the 1994 Alex Proyas-directed adaptation, in which rock musician Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) is murdered trying to rescue his girlfriend from thugs, and returns from the dead one year later to exact vengeance.

For Norrington, The Crow deal marks the end of a long screen sabbatical. After making his breakthrough with Blade, Norrington took on a big-budget comic transfer with The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Neither the director nor his star, Sean Connery, has made a feature film since.

"Whereas Proyas' original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=51302#) will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style," Norrington said.

According to Variety (http://www.variety.com/), movie studios are being cautious about spending money for films in 2010 and 2011. One interesting note revolves around Mickey Rourkehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.411mania.com/movies/news/94997/%5BMovies%5D-Mickey-Rourke-Only-Offered-$250,000-for-Iron-Man-2?.htm#) and Iron Man 2. Here is an excerpt from the article…

Then there is comeback kid Mickey Rourke, who is poised to follow his Golden Globe-winning performance in "The Wrestler" with an offer to play the main villain in "Iron Man 2" — but at a lowball opening offer of $250,000 from Marvel; Marvel's tactics have already prompted Samuel L. Jackson to swear off playing Nick Fury because of a similarly low offer.

Iron Man made $582 million at the worldwide box office, plus DVD sales. Maybe this kind of lowball offer is what drove Samuel L. Jackson away.

This is very puzzling, and they want to continue on the success they had, they are gonna want to do the right thing and pay the actors and directors well for their great work.

Soderbergh, Pitt roll with 'Moneyball'

Director, actor circle Columbia's adaptation

By MICHAEL FLEMING (http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=bio&peopleID=1231)

Steven Soderbergh (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/32035/Steven%20Soderbergh.html?dataSet=1) is in talks to direct "Moneyball," the Columbia Pictures (http://www.variety.com/profiles/Company/main/2008136/Columbia%20TriStar%20Motion%20Picture%20Group.html ?dataSet=1) adaptation of Michael Lewis (http://javascript<b></b>:zodInfuser.FillDescriptions('Michael Lewis');)' book "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game."

The book focuses on Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics (http://www.variety.com/profiles/Company/main/2086184/Oakland%20Athletics.html?dataSet=1) who used a sophisticated computer analysis system to piece together a team that regularly contended for the World Series despite a payroll dramatically lower than such big-market rivals as the New York Yankees (http://www.variety.com/profiles/Company/main/2084398/New%20York%20Yankees.html?dataSet=1).
Brad Pitt (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/28425/Brad%20Pitt.html?dataSet=1), with whom Soderbergh has worked in all of the "Ocean's" films, has been circling "Moneyball" since last year, when Steve Zaillian signed on to adapt the book after original scripter Stan Chervin (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/35038/Stan%20Chervin.html?dataSet=1) exited the project. "Marley and Me" (http://www.variety.com/profiles/Film/main/179586/Marley%20%26%20Me.html?dataSet=1) helmer David Frankel (http://javascript<b></b>:zodInfuser.FillDescriptions('David Frankel');) had also been attached.
Michael De Luca and Rachael Horovitz (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/28756/Rachael%20Horovitz.html?dataSet=1) are producing.
Soderbergh has always wanted to make a sports film and sparked to the opportunity to reteam with Pitt. Soderbergh is looking to make the picture his next directing assignment.
He had been expected to next direct "Cleo," a musical about the fatal romance between Egyptian queen Cleopatra and Roman general Marc Antony (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/128293/Marc%20Antony.html?dataSet=1). Soderbergh had lined up his "Traffic" (http://javascript<b></b>:zodInfuser.FillDescriptions('&quot;Traffic&quot;');) star Catherine Zeta-Jones (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/31049/Catherine%20Zeta-Jones.html?dataSet=1) to play the title character and had Hugh Jackman (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/29693/Hugh%20Jackman.html?dataSet=1) in his sights for Antony. Though he set his financing, Soderbergh decided to push back the film until next year after Jackman dropped out because of scheduling problems. Soderbergh, rolling out "Che," most recently completed "The Girlfriend Experience" for 2929 and Warner Bros. comedy "The Informant."

NPH to play The Flash?

http://screenrant.com/the-flash-neil-patrick-harris-vic-5435/

Ready for a wild rumor? How about Neil Patrick Harris being pursued to play DC comic book superhero The Flash (http://screenrant.com/tag/the-flash/)? The last we had heard, Ryan Reynolds was in the running (get it?) for the role, but with the upcoming Wolverine movie (http://screenrant.com/tag/wolverine/) it seems like his superhero destiny may be tied up as Deadpool.
But this, if true, is pretty much out of left field.

The Flash has been on again (http://screenrant.com/goyer-doing-the-flash-next-vic-221/), off again (http://screenrant.com/rip-flash-and-wonder-woman-movies-vic-570/) and now on again with the recent addition of a screenwriter (http://screenrant.com/flash-script-writer-dan-mazeau-sabrina-5288/). We first mentioned it back in 2004 when David Goyer was supposedly going to write the script (he went on to write a little movie you may have heard of: The Dark Knight). Then there was nothing heard for three years until the announcement that Goyer was not writing the movie, but that Shawn Levy was attached to direct, then comedy director David Dobkin. That news quietly faded away and nothing was heard until earlier this month, when word surfaced that Dan Mazeau was attached to write the screenplay.

Now comes possible “insider” news that Neil Patrick Harris and possibly Scott Porter (according to ThinkMcFlyThink.com (http://thinkmcflythink.squarespace.com/movie-news/2009/2/10/exclusive-is-scott-porter-in-the-running-for-the-flash.html)) are being looked at to play the Scarlet Speedster. Scott played the young Rex Racer in Speed Racer and has a recurring role on Friday Night Lights.

And of course who doesn’t know who Neil Patrick Harris is? For a 35 year old guy, he seems like he’s been around forever… starting out years ago as Doogie Howser, M.D. and then appearing in Starship Troopers (yes, he was in that). After that he bounced around doing one-shot appearances in TV (http://screenrant.com/the-flash-neil-patrick-harris-vic-5435/#) episodes and a lot of cartoon voiceover work including Justice League and Spider-Man.

But what brought him back into popularity was his wild character in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, which led to a leading role on the sitcom How I Met Your Mother.
Anyway, it’ll be interesting to see if this pans out - no doubt he could pull it off if he buffed up and I think he’s got the acting chops to do it.

Again, keep in mind this is FAR from confirmed - but what do you think about the possibility of Neil Patrick Harris as The Flash?

Pretty much as expected except for Sean Penn taking home an oscar for his title role in Milk. In my opinion, Mickey Rourke was robbed. Penn definitely needed to reach a little further outside of his realm to play Harvey Milk when it could be argued that Rourke didn't have to do much reaching at all. However, Rourke poured his heart and soul into that character and it really shines through in his performance. His acting made you forget that what you're watching is a work of fiction and not a biopic of a real life Randy "The Ram" Robinson. At the end of the day, that should have merited an academy award.

KEVIN SMITH TO DIRECT 'A BUNCH OF DICKS'????

Now, however, ERC (http://www.ercboxoffice.com/index.php?page=news&news_id=116)is reporting that Warner Bros. has signed Smith to direct the comedy A Couple of Dicks (yup, he's leaving The Weinstein Co.!), starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. Additionally, ERC says that Warners has already given the film a January 29, 2010 release date.

But here's the most fascinating part of this whole thing: A Couple of Dicks was not written by Kevin Smith -- instead, it was written by Robb and Marc Cullen, and it was featured on the 2008 Blacklist (which is a not-so-secret list of the year's best unproduced screenplays in town). The brief synopsis listed goes as follows: "Two veteran LAPD detectives attempt to track down a stolen, mint-condition, 1952 baseball card." Originally, Robin Williams was set to star in the comedy back when the Cullen brothers were also directing, but he wound up suing the production company when they pulled out and told him they were no longer making the movie (read more at Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117994311.html?categoryid=13&cs=1)).

Kevin not doing his own shit AND leaving the Weinsteins are both really good moves for him at this point.

The America-set remake, written by Chris Rock and Ayesha Carr, revolves around a dysfunctional family that gathers for the patriarch’s funeral where tensions rise and old conflicts are unearthed.

MacGyver is Coming to the Big Screen!

The Hollywood Reporter says that New Line Cinema is bringing MacGyver (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=53724) to the big screen.

Raffaella De Laurentiis, daughter of Dino De Laurentiis, is producing through her Raffaella Productions along with Martha De Laurentiis and series creator Lee Zlotoff. Dino De Laurentiis is executive producing.

"MacGyver" ran on ABC from 1985-92. Richard Dean Anderson, later of "Stargate: Atlantis" and "SG-1" fame, starred as an incredibly resourceful secret agent for the Phoenix Foundation who frequently would escape from dangerous situations with ingenious and lightning-quick engineering trickery.

No writer is attached, but the studio hopes to find a script that can acknowledge how the concept has staked a place into pop culture yet still makes for a serious and fun adventure movie.

"We think we're a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip and an A-list writer away from a global franchise," said New Line's Richard Brener.

Back in February the boys over at Latino Review (http://www.latinoreview.com/news/exclusive-could-the-new-freddy-kruger-be-watchmen-s-rorschach-6172) had broke the news first that Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) was in fact locked down as your new Freddy Krueger. Expect an official announcement as early as next week. Shooting begins under the watch of Samuel Bayer at the end of the month in Chicago on A Nightmare on Elm Street (http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/film/1108), New Line Cinema's reboot of the infamous franchise created by Wes Craven that followed Krueger, a serial child killer murdered by angry parents, who returns with a burnt face and a razor glove to terrorize teens in their dreams. Dressed in the most expensive clothes they had ever worn, Slumdog Millionaire’s child stars thought their life of poverty and deprivation was over after the film’s haul of eight Oscars. They had been promised new homes, money and an education. But six weeks after being flown to Hollywood and lavished with praise Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail feel angry, bitter and betrayed.
Mention the name of Danny Boyle, once seen as the hero who would rescue them from the slums, and disappointment is etched across the face of the two children plucked from poverty to star in his hit film. Boyle and producer Christian Coulson stand accused of betraying the film’s most vulnerable young stars.
Public promises of new homes, money and education have failed to materialise. No one from the production company has been to visit, nor have they bothered to phone.
Rubina and Azhar, who played the youngest Latika and Salim, are still living in the slums – a year after filming their critically acclaimed roles, they are resigned to the likelihood that they always will. If the children are disappointed, their parents are furious.
“We have been abandoned by Danny Boyle and his associates,” said Rafiq Qureshi, the father of Rubina. “He promised us a lot when the film won at the Oscars but since then no one has come to visit us.
“We’ve been given no money and no house. There is no trust fund that I’ve been told about. The monthly allowance promised to Rubina and Azhar stopped before they even went to the Oscars.
“I feel betrayed and hurt. All these promises came to nothing.”
Boyle and Coulson repeatedly made public promises of education, money to buy a house and a trust fund for the children, claiming it was one of their top priorities.
“We have paid painstaking and considered attention to how Azhar and Rubina’s involvement in the film could be of lasting benefit to them over and above the payment they received for their work,” said Boyle in a statement at the time of the Oscars.
“The children had never attended school, and in consultation with their parents we agreed that this would be our priority.
“Since June 2008 and at our expense, both kids have been attending school and they are flourishing under the tutelage of their dedicated and committed teachers.
“Financial resources have been made available for their education until they are 18. We were delighted to see them progressing well when we visited their school and met with their teachers last week.”
The reality, according to Rubina’s father, is somewhat different. Education at the government school is free. The only expense spent by Slumdog’s producers is on an autorickshaw to take them to school, costing £1 per day.
Despite grossing over £185 million worldwide and winning eight Oscars the impoverished families of Slumdog’s youngest stars claim they do not even have enough money to buy simple medicines.
And despite repeated public guarantees the financial security promised to the children and their families has yet to materialise.
Last month Rubina and Azhar were sent by their desperate parents cap-in hand-to Sonia Gandhi, India’s most powerful politician, to plead their case for a new home.
“We don’t have a good house to live in. We have made the country proud by acting in a film that won eight Oscar awards. We feel that we have done a good job for our country so we want Sonia to give us a good house,” said nine-year-old Rubina.
Travelling to Delhi to meet Gandhi, the President of India’s ruling Congress Party, the two destitute child-actors and their families claimed they had been badly let down after their work in the multi-award winning film.
“The film’s producers promised us a new home and that my child would receive a trust fund for her education, but nothing has come of this,” said Mr Quershi.
“We were paid £700 for my child’s one month of work and other provisions such as traveling costs were provided, but what we were promised and what we have received does not match up.”
On numerous occasions Coulson and Boyle promised the now famous children would be given money for a house and a trust fund that would be made available to them when and if they stayed in education until their 18th birthday.
“These are bricks and mortar flats. They will have electricity, running water and good sanitation,” said Boyle a month ago.
“They will still be close to their friends and extended family. Their community is very important to them, and they don’t want to move too far away from them.”
Mr Qureshi, 36, is furious at what he sees as a betrayal. He has refused permission for Rubina to act in other films unless she is paid in advance.
“When my child began filming at the beginning of 2008 we were led to believe that £35,000 would be split and used to buy my family and Azharuddin’s family two homes,” he said.
“And we also believed that the same amount would be put aside in a trust fund to be split between Rubina and Azharuddin when they reached 18 and left school.
“I have seen no papers, I have no bank details, no one from Celador or Fox-Searchlight has been to my home to see me.
“I have given up on them because they seem to have forgotten about us. I should have known better than to trust them.”

OH FUCK YEAH!

According to The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/), Disney and Mandeville productions are set to remake the 1986 sci-fi adventure Flight of the Navigator. The original 1986 film saw a young boy abducted by an alien spacecraft in 1978. He then reappears 8-years later, but still the same age and with no memory of the abduction. NASA scientists try to exploit the boy once they discover a connection between the boy and a downed spacecraft. The original only made $17 million at the box office, but was a big cult hit once it hit VHS. John Hyde, the original executive producer will be back in the same role for the remake.

So apparently Deadpool/Hannibal King is now also The Green Lantern

Ryan Reynolds has landed the coveted role of “Green Lantern,” getting the starring role in Warner Bros.' live-action film based on the DC Comics hero.

Martin Campbell will direct. The studio is still working on the picture’s budget, but production is expected to begin in January.

The news caps off a memorable summer for Reynolds, who played Deadpool in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” a performance that prompted Fox to begin development on a spinoff film. Reynolds followed that by starring opposite Sandra Bullock in the romantic comedy “The Proposal,” which crossed the $100 million mark this week.
Warners and Campbell chose Reynolds, who vied for the superhero role along with “The Hangover” star Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. The momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended.

Greg Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. Donald DeLine will produce with Berlanti. Reynolds’ reps at UTA are working out his deal.
The actor will next star in “Buried,” a dark indie drama that will begin filming shortly in Barcelona with Spanish director Rodrigo Cortes. Reynolds will play a civilian contractor who is kidnapped in Iraq and awakes in a coffin, struggling against time to coordinate a rescue even though he doesn’t know where he’s buried in the desert.

SAM RAIMI DIRECTING WORLD OF WARCRAFT (http://filmdrunk.uproxx.com/2009/07/sam-raimi-directing-world-of-warcraft)

After Spider-Man 3, it was nice to see Sam Raimi (http://widget.uproxx.com/b/3/http://www.uproxx.com/page/Sam+Raimi?pid=3) go back to his roots with Drag Me to Hell (http://filmdrunk.uproxx.com/2009/07/sam-raimi-directing-world-of-warcraft). But his return to smaller films won’t last long as he’s now signed to direct World of Warcraft, perhaps the ultimate no-win project for a director. The plan is for Raimi to supervise development of “Warcraft” and shoot the picture after he completes work on “Spider-Man 4http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2.gif (http://filmdrunk.uproxx.com/2009/07/sam-raimi-directing-world-of-warcraft#),” which gets under way early next year. The “Warcraft” universe [and by "universe" they mean "video game"] features an epic conflict between the Horde and the Alliance. The game has developed a global following since its launch in 1994 and shows no signs of slowing. Its most recent expansion, “Wrath of the Lich King,” sold more than 2.8 million copies in the first day of release and more than 4 million its first month. [Variety (http://widget.uproxx.com/b/3/http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118006299.html?categoryid=13&cs=1&nid=2564)]
Something tells me the movie will be more like the wrath of suck king, amirite? Haha, good one, Jay. Anyway, every video gamehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2.gif (http://filmdrunk.uproxx.com/2009/07/sam-raimi-directing-world-of-warcraft#) movie so far has been tremendously sucky, but this time they’ve got an unquestionably huge-name game paired with an established, respected director. If this still ends up sucking, can we all agree that movies based on video games are a bad idea and stop attempting them forever? Haha, of course that’ll never happen, now get off my lawn. LIGHTNING BOLT! LIGHTNING BOLT!

PS - Can you imagine a worse Comic-Con panel to be at than this one? “Excuse me, Mr. Raimi, but I think everyone here knows that although a skilled Warlock can counter a rogue with demonic circle or even shadowfury, trying to stop a feral druid on a berzerk is a fool’s errand.” (*thunderous applause*)

I heard they showed 20 minutes of "Avatar" at Comic-Con and it is supposedly incredible. The official trailer drops August 21st.
