Spanish basketball team poses for offensive picture

By Chris Chase

Updated: 4:43 p.m. EDT
Spain (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/esp/)'s Olympic basketball team posed for an advertisement prior to the Games (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/olympics/2540221/Spanish-basketball-red-faced-over-slit-eyed-Olympic-photo.html) which appears to show all its players slanting their eyes, a move that could offend its Olympic hosts in Beijing. The ads, for a Spanish courier company, appeared in the Spanish-language newspaper La Marca.

As the uproar over the picture has grown today, more information about the advertising shot has come to light. The New York Times reports that Spain's basketball team is sponsored by Li-Ning Footwear (http://olympics.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/12/spanish-ad-spurs-charges-of-racism/), a Chinese company founded by Li Ning, the final torchbearer who was hoisted along the top of Beijing National Stadium during the Olympic Opening Ceremony finale. The ad reportedly references the Spanish team recently extending their contract with the footwear giant for another four years.
The Spanish-language paper El Mundo has a piece debating whether the ad was racist (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.elmundo.es%2Fjjoo%2F2 008%2F2008%2F08%2F12%2Fbaloncesto%2F1218564829.htm l&sl=es&tl=en&hl=EN&ie=UTF-8) that basically calls out the British press for trying to smear Spain's good name. But they miss the point. Whether the picture was made in good fun is irrelevant. It was a ridiculous idea that was bound to upset a lot of people.
It's baffling that nobody involved in the picture -- from the photographers to the players -- even seemed to consider that this ad would be looked at negatively. Did it not occur to somebody that it might not be a good idea to mock an entire continent before the world's largest athletic competition that, by the way, happens to take place on that continent. Were they not aware of an invention called "the Internet" that allows pictures taken in Spain to be transmitted all over the world for the eyes of everyone? And now that the inevitable controversy has hit, they're still defending themselves when a simple, "the ad was in poor taste, we apologize" would have sufficed. This story would be slowing down if the Spanish Basketball team had apologized immediately. Now it's just picking up steam.
The Organization of Chinese-Americans has released multiple statements condemning the picture (http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/story?id=5563668&page=1). George Wu, deputy director of the group, said, "it is unfortunate that this type of imagery would rear its head during something that is supposed to be a time of world unity." Response in Beijing has been muted so far.
Madrid is thought to be one of the frontrunners to land the 2016 Summer Games (the site will be announced next year). Could this controversy hurt Spain's chances of landing another Olympics?
Interestingly, the Spanish basketball team took on China (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/chn/) tonight, winning 85-75 in overtime. No word on whether Pau Gasol (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/esp/pau+gasol/213588/) was on the receiving end of any elbows from Yao Ming (http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/chn/ming+yao/236800/). The Chinese crowd did have a message for the Spainards though, booing vigorously during the game.

Considering he was Chinese, would he have really had to do anything except stand there?

I want to know who the fuck decided this was a good idea. What ad agency exec said "hey! we have a courier service under contract, you know what would help their business out? our national basketball team making fun of the Chinese! Brilliant!", and what team official said "well fuck it, this WON'T come back to bite us in the ass someday"? Is John Edwards running the Spanish Basketball Program now?

I mean shit, if this was just a confidential picture from "team photo day", that got leaked to the press, I could understand it. But to base an ad campaign around this picture, is just insanity.

Spain is a pretty racist country. Most of their fairly limited immigration is from moslem countries, and they aren't a particularly diverse nation. Black soccer players still get 'monkey' abuse at some grounds, and the recent Euro winning soccer head coach was a noted racial bigot.

Not defending them, but in that context they culturally don't see much wrong with casual racism.

Which is funny, because a lot of them are migrant workers here.

They still throw banannas at the black players on their own soccer team. This picture isn't even surprising.

As Archangel and others said, racism is a huge problem in Spain. It's fairly common throughout Europe, really, or at least in places that are largely homogeneous in terms of ethnicity. I understand they're not exactly welcoming to British tourists especially.

Whether or not you find the picture racist or funny or both, it was a very stupid idea. Surely they must have realized that pictures like this end up on the Internet and get spread around and cause offense. If it had been the U.S. team that had done this, there would have been so much outrage and indignation it may have bumped Favre out of the sports headlines for a few days.

Anybody hear what Jason Kidd said about if this had been the USA team on SportsCenter? We wouldn't allow them back into the country. There would be suspensions. He called the Spanish team's standards out too. Stating a double standard with "lesser" countries in competition.

Actually, 4 of the players on the team are in the NBA, an additional 2 were in the league last year, and 1 is a likely top 3 pick in next years draft.

Rubio could end up being a #1 overall if he has a good showing this year. He was a surprise on the Olympic team believe it or not (from what I read or heard on NBC or Sportscenter- sorry for no link). From watching him though I still think his game is a bit slow for the NBA. I would like to see if he can make the transition and people need to quit comparing him to Pistol.

His speed is really his only question mark. He's got size for the PG position, ridiculous Basketball IQ, improved shooting, and most importantly he has the potential to be one of the best defensive PG's in the league. The guy led the Spanish ACB league(2nd best league in the world, I might add) in steals at age 17. Hell, if he is eating into Calderon's minutes now, I can only imagine what he would be like when he hits his 20's.

Don't get me wrong I want to see this kid succeed also. Hell I hope he goes near the top so the Knicks could take him. I agree with you about his defensive options due to his length it will be tough for other guards he is matched up against. I think his desire at times might be questioned but I think that could just be due to his age at this point. I have known about Rubio for a few years now and I do think he is good. I haven't been able to see him recently though (in regards to your improved shooting note I meant). If he can take a few seconds off his gather and release of his shot he will be tough to stop.

and heck if Marc Gasol elected to enter the draft next year, he would of definitely have been a top 5 pick. I didn't realize the talent Spain had until you put that into context.
