Tell me which movies you think are overrated. Personal opinion, blah blah blah. Don't argue with me. I'm the man. I'm not saying these films totally suck, just that they're overrated.
The Breakfast Club
The exception to my statement that these films don't totally suck and the main reason I started this thread. I'm sick of people clinging to this little 80's piece of sentiment as an actual good movie. It's not. Everything about this piece of shit is corny as hell. From the worst part of 80's music, to the high school cliches, this movie absolutely blows. In my opinion of course. Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey, OOOOOOooooooOOOOOaaaHHHHHH! Terrible. The over dramatization of high school. The end scene with the "bad boy" pumping his fist in the air frozen. Ugh, it makes me sick to think of.
The Deer Hunter
As much as I like De Niro, I think this one gets too much praise. So he went and lived as a steel worker for 6 months. Why? They're only in a steel factory for 6 minutes. If that. There's an intense couple of scenes and a lot of boring filler. And the longest wedding scene ever. I'd rather just go to a real wedding, at least I'd get free food.
Juno
I'm just including this one because it's been getting such rave reviews from everybody. I saw it, don't see the big deal. It's like they took elements from Saved! and Napoleon Dynamite and clumsily threw them together. Not an absolutely terrible film, just way overrated.
I'd like to revive this with a film that I noticed has a crazy cult following.
The Boondock Saints
Yeah, yeah, the cat, that was funny. This movie has it's moments, but overall is pretty mediocre. The two brothers viewing themselves as righteous killers for god is pretty pretentious, and doesn't it bother anybody else that they kill the nudie booth customers? At the end they say that they only kill the "truly corrupted", but is paying a stripper to get naked while you jack off REALLY a deadly sin? Anyways, while it was an okay movie, it gets too much praise in my honest-to-goodness opinion.
Also - Thanks to FACE for gettin' my stuff. For grabbin' my junk.
almost anything with Tom Hanks...

Boogie Nights
Dirk Diggler's life is formulaic, and a little bit boring. For me this movie really went downhill and dragged on after Bill Macy shot himself. Naked Heather Graham is nice, naked Julianne Moore is standard.

Any comedy starring Will Ferrell. He's fine in small doses for short cameos, but his shtick gets old quick and it's always the same role.
Also, Office Space was watchable but I still don't understand the cult status it has garnered. It's just not that funny

he was fine prior to Anchorman and making his cameos in some films like Austin Powers, but since then, Talledega Nights and Stepbrothers were just dumb as fuck.
overrated movies off the top of my head: Cloverfield (was there any need for a love angle?), Dawn of the Dead remake (I found it more amusing than scary with the celebrity lookalike zombies), Indiana Jones - Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (do I really need to explain?)

Godfather....
Yea I went there.
From the recent ones: No Country for Old Man.
Maybe I expected too much from a movie hailed by critics that much. But just because movie is different from 99% of the junk that Hollywood spews out, doesn’t make it necessarily great. It left me with a "that's it?" feeling after it was over.
I can easily live without happy-endings, but the movie doesn't have an ending at all, happy or otherwise. An old cop decided he was just too old to be bothered, and that’s it? Why didn’t he just call for backup? Not in Texan spirit enough? And the moral is... times have changed? WOW!
Besides, this Hitchcock wannabe has too much gaping plot holes and lame good-ol’-days philosophizing.
On the other side the cinematography was brilliant and Bardem deserved his Oscar – he was awesome. Not even to mention his hairstyle!!!
Willam
09-30-2008, 06:03 AM
I'd have to go with The Matrix. I think the concept was brilliant but it's Keanu fucking Reeves. He can't act his way out of a paper bag. His best 2 movies (Bill and Ted and Parenthood) were good because he played an idiot. That's the role he was born to play.

Scarface - It's a good, solid movie but it has been hyped to high heaven because of
A) a few choice quotes and
B) almost every rapper that came out in the last 10 years apparently grew up with a Tony Montana poster on their bedroom wall
I like De Palma - I just prefer The Untouchables and Carlito's Way over Scarface
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, and There Will Be Blood: Not all that bad, but I was promised masterpieces, which was far from the truth.

Field Of Dreams - Costner hears voices and hates and or misses his dad. That isn’t entertainment but a therapy session.
The Devil's Advocate - Keanu and Charlize’s horrible accents vs. Pacino’s deviled ham performance.
Bram Stoker's Dracula - One of the few films where Anthony Hopkins is just unwatchable. Keanu with another bad accent. Ryder is annoying. I also don’t picture Dracula as a lovesick pussy.
Lost in Translation - It wasn’t funny or endearing but it certainly was boring.
Mystic River - I’m not saying that Sean Penn is a bad actor but he certainly is overrated. Why can’t he do another comedy and show more range rather than showing that retarded angst ridden face all the time.
Rain Man - Yeah, I get that people with autism can be special but if I want to watch retarded behavior or someone spaz out for entertainment, I’ll just take a city bus.

But that's not even a quarter of the movie. The movie is about the relation of the father's story to the son's, and watching Michael Corleone slip into darkness.
And we all "call things like we see them."
That's why I love that movie, you see how Vito rose to power, and how ruthless and cunning Micheal is to maintain it. That Micheal went from a naive outsider, to a powerful Mob boss. One of the greatest stories, and one of the best performances.
Just calling it like I see it.
Buono blah blah blah...no foreign movie deserves a top 10.
you do realize that Il Buono, il brutto, il cattivo is the italian title of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, right? I'd hardly consider that a foreign film

Possibly the most underrated movie of all time. It gets credit, but not enough. You, sir, need to go re-watch the movie, specifially the firecracker/Sister Christian scene and tell me again Boogie Nights is overrated.
Dude, underrated?
It's cool if you like it, most people do, but no way is it underrated. This fuckin' movie gets credit shoved up it's ass like there's no tomorrow. I had never even seen the movie when I decided to buy the 3 disc special "party edition". It launched Wahlberg's acting career, for him to turn around and do dreck like "We own the Night", and "The Happening."
I don't know. The fall into drugs and violence was predictable, and a movie ending with a gigantic penis on a screen for 30 seconds leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth.

The messianic allegory in the Superman movies isn't subtle or anything. Marlon Brando's dialogue is downright screaming "YO! AUDIENCE! THE MOTHERFUCKER IN THE TIGHTS AND CAPE IS SUPPOSED TO REPRESENT JESUS CHRIST! I SENT MY ONE AND ONLY SON TO SAVE YOU ALL! YOU GOT ALL THAT!?"
Superman Returns was especially heavy handed with the Christ-like imagery--him plummeting back to Earth with his arms stretched out like he's being crucified--ugh.

I don't believe so. It really boils down to whether there is a profit to be made. The X-Men, Spider-man, and Batman series all had more success than Superman. Superman might have helped but to say that those films would never have been made is quite a leap.

You don't think about Kurosawa and how much he's done that has been ripped off? Terry Gillam and John Cleese and the rest of the Monty Python crew can fuck themselves?
Go back to your county college bullshit film classes, where they teach you the definition of Mise-en-scene for a semester, and then open your mouth. Maybe if you had any idea what the fuck you were talking about, some of your work might be noticed or sold. You are a fucking twit.

Overrated movies of the last few years:
300- Homoerotic and homophobic at the same time. The fact that the blood doesn't stay on the ground is pretty symbolic. Looks like a bad video game cutscene. Perverts the most famous of lines from the story (fighting in the shade). Its nerd gay porn.
Garden State- When you creative a narrative without a single likeable character, how can you produce an enjoyable film? I'm all for style over substance, when its something actually unique or memorable. "Oh fuck, his shirt matches the wallpaper..."
Kingdom of Heaven- "Hi, I look like a total fucking pussy fag. I am a blacksmith. I am going to be trained for a total of 5 minutes. Now, I am the greatest warrior in the history of earth." Ooh, let's set up a group of badasses that the audience can cheer for. It will be like Predator, but in the Crusades. Just kidding, everyone dies within five minutes, and ORLANDO BLOOM is the roughest (only rough) motherfucker in the room. Oh, and for the climax, let's have guys pushing each other in a gateway.

Ya, you'd do her for about two weeks, and then murder her.
Wall E- Spent way too long trying to humanize Wall E, and then completely dehumanized the actual humans. Technology makes us lazy! People are fat! We're showing this film in a theatre, where you sit in the most comfortable chairs possible, eating the most fattening shit possible, on a format that makes you as stupid as possible!!!!! Fuck you.
The Departed- The first 80% of the movie was enjoyable enough, but then it lost it. Oh, there's a rat. I get it. Too many people get killed. That shit worked for No Country for Old Men, because there's no fucking CSI El Paso. Give me a break. Nicholson was awful and hammy.
Sin City- Fuck Frank Miller.
Good Night and Good Luck- We have the benefit of hindsight and history, which tells us that we could shed some light on the fact that McCarthy was actually correct in many of his accusations. Instead of doing that, let's just continue the hatchet job. We'll appear very brave, in continuing the media tradition of being completely self-congratulatory.

I agree. I was a film major and everyone raved about this being one of the greatest if not the great film ever. watched it and thought it stunk. I would never have put it even in my top 100 films. Horribly overrated.

This will probably get me in trouble, but here goes....
My pick for the most over-rated film in history is The Godfather. Now I don't dislike the movie, in fact, I like it very much. I feel this way because of the endless arguments I've had with those who can't live with the fact that it isn't the be-all-end-all of movies. It's not even the best mob movie. That would go to either Donnie Brasco or Goodfellas. It has a great story and great acting but it's just not the best movie ever made. I'm really kind of bored with the whole mafia genre anyway. It doesn't do anything for me.
