I think Oasis, Arctic Monkeys and Pink Floyd are disturbingly overrated along with the obligatory Zeppelin and Metallica. Not sure if they're underrated, certainly not in my vicarage, but The Smiths were simply the finest band the planet has ever seen.

also Okkervil River and Interpol are hideously underrated.

I love how this thread is basically a masturbatory session for people who like shit indie bands. You sound like those people whose buddy is actually better than Kobe Bryant.

Everyone of the really big artists is overrated, especially if they have helped found/define a genre. With millions of fanatic supporters, they get sanctified to a point which is ridiculous for anybody who only makes pop music. Nobody religiously collects Arctic Monkey memorabilia; Elvis? different story.
GZA is 10x the emcee anybody in Whodini or the Furious Five was, but because the latter basically put rap on the map, they get the rep, as do the guys nobody has ever heard of, because knowing about them makes you look - what, exactly, in the internet age? It's not like it takes effort; you're not exactly digging in the crates here. Everybody can click someone's MySpace page.

By the way: Michael Jordan is possibly the most overrated ballplayer in history. Doesn't change the fact that he was the best (sorry Wilt). Same goes for the Beatles.

overrated..and yet the best? explain that, Arch. must be some new german logic

It's quite simple. The Beatles were a great band, possibly the best, but they've been canonised to be some kind of mythical creatures that never put a foot wrong. They were a fucking pop band, for fuck's sake. The best example of this phenomenon is obviously Elvis. He was pretty sodding good, but he wasn't the demi-god he's been made out to be.
All the very best are ridiculously overrated - because they transcend their medium. The difference between a good band and, say, Metallica is that people who aren't strictly fans of a particular genre listen to the latter - just as casual sports fans have heard that MJ was great, but have no idea who, say, David Thompson was. Everybody knows Nirvana, not just alternative rock nerds. And this can lead to resentment from the hardcore fans, or those who want to look cool through some arcane knowledge.

But there is a reason why Springsteen, Metallica, The Stones etc have been hugely popular for ages - and it's not just because the masses are stupid.

Archangel
10-12-2008, 10:04 AM
You want overrated bands, look at every band that was on the cover of Rolling Stone in the past 15 years, alongside a headline that said something along the likes of "rock is back" or "the rebirth of rock" etc. I mean, The Strokes? Seriously?

Over:
Eminem - without Dre he is nothing, just look at his last few albums without Dre producing everything. Since when is rock lyrics with a hip-hop beat original? Its not, it is because he is white.

Elvis - He didn't write anything: music or lyrics. He never worked to help other artist, he was just controversial and marketable, just like Eminem.

Dave Mathews - He is Bob Dylan's singing talent with Little Bow Wow's writing talent. People only like him because it is cool to like him, or because they are constantly high.

Under:

Tech N9ne - If talent sold records he would be Platinum 100 times over. His lyrics can be a little cheesy at times, but 98% of his stuff is fire.

311 - One of the best live shows ever. They have great albums year after year (except Don't Tread On Me). They are great and not pretentious or Indie.

Flaw - Great songwriter and very talented band.

Pretty much everyone I know thinks Tool sucks except me. So maybe they're not under-rated on ther internet, but they are in real life.

For once in my life I have to agree with moe. I think A LOT of people misunderstand this thread. It's for what you believe to be over and under rated bands. For instance, just because your friends think that Tool sucks, doesn't mean that they are underrated. Your friends probably just listen to a different style of music. If everyone on the planet bragged about Tool on a daily basis and they were just a mediocre band, then this would classify them as an overated band. On the other end of the spectrum, if you never heard anyone talk about Tool, they got no airplay, ect. then they would be underrated. I saw someone put Panic! at the Disco on their overrated list. WTF? Just because they are a terrible, terrible band doesn't mean they are overrated. I can't tell you the last time I've heard the name Panic! at the Disco in my presence. It's been a good year or so. So again, I think a lot of people don't get this thread or are just plain idiots. If a band is good or bad, doesn't make them over or under rated. Or maybe you all need new friends that don't talk about shitty music.

Ethix

Seriously though, Tool seems to be one of those bands that is talked about constantly on the internet, but I never hear anybody mention in real life. Even when they were on tour around here, the radio stations would be like "Oh yeah, Tool's playing at so and so arena this weekend...moving on." Maybe there just aren't many fans in my area. Who knows.

Regardless, I still think they're underrated.

so i'm confused. people can't subjectively decide what's overrated, but you can subjectively decide what isn't? because you haven't heard the name in forever then they are irrelevant? i had no idea i was in the presence of the almighty music god. do you realize that the thesis of your argument is contradicting your argument? the irony in this post is lulzy.

Overrated: Radiohead. They have a bunch of songs that are undoubtedly great, but now it doesn't even matter what they release, every new Radiohead album is getting its cock sucked by fans and critics before its even released, I can barely listen to most of the newer shit. I really tried to get into the later stuff because its so praised, but I just couldn't. When a group thats supposed to be the best band of our generation pops up on my itunes shuffle and I immediately hit for next song, somethings up.

under: between the buried and me

they make true metal music that makes so-called metal(ie; ac/dc, metallica etc) look like pussies

You're forgetting that AC/DC and Metallica were both defining bands in the metal genre. Ask BTBAM who their influences are and I gaurantee AC/DC or Metallica were one of them.

But as for Under rated bands,

Toto
The Animals

Over,

the Beastie Boys

Was there anything in my post talking about BTBAM's influence? NO. And just because band A of a certain genre takes influence from band B does not make band B a part of said genre. Metallica and AC/DC are (imo) good bands but fall into the genre of hard rock not metal and as I already said, even if a band such as BTBAM is or was influenced by either it doesn't neccessarily make them metal. They were defining bands for their time but not for metal.

Underrated - Blind melon

this explains a lot.

under: early incubus, a perfect circle

early incubus (pre-make yourself) was the fuckin' truth, back before they took themselves too seriously and were musicians with a technical flair and talent. everything after that is great, too, but srsly: s.c.i.e.n.c.e. and prior was amazing.

a perfect circle is also a good example of technical greatness. maynard being maynard it was going to be good anyways, but i digress. the guy insists on surrounding himself with musicians, not a bunch of fucking get-rich-quick tools. most of apc's shit could be used as course study for advanced composition.

over: nirvana, metallica, nickelback

nirvana. god hit the smite key on cobain for attempting to pollute the world with shitty, stupidly simple, whiny music. now he's dead. good riddance. the only thing good to come out of nirvana was dave grohl.

metallica... has been dying since the black album. everything since that point has been basically the same song re-arranged with "aaahhh" spanked on to the ass of increasingly more words with every album. they've passed the point at which they could retire at the top. jesus, they're pushing fucking 90 in rock years. go away, already.

nickelback... an accelerated version of metallica: same fucking song re-arranged 120 times. seems like they release a new god-awful album once every six months, and the only thing that changes is the cover art and the tempo of half the songs. how did this band get so popular?

Mew

They make beautiful music, but I've never personally met anyone that's even heard from them, and other than a few weeks of Special and Am I Wry? No getting video play on Subterranean the only place I've heard them are on my computer and in my cd player. Maybe it's because they're Danish, I don't know...more people should like them.

hard to say they're underrated since nobody knows about them, but i like mew too. discovered them randomly through their song The Zookeeper's Boy. At first i was like "what the hell is this", then i couldnt stop listening

Michael McDonald and the Doobie Brothers - there's a group that has been rated correctly.
I did a fucking music workshop with Michael McDonald; what a douche. His son was nice but had the makings of a douche and his son's girlfriend was a ex-coke head slut who was really stuck up but totally took it in the butt probably. true story.
