Los Angeles - One of two University of Southern California students struck in a deadly hit-and-run got caught on the hood of the car until the driver stopped and a passenger got out and pulled the victim off, police said Monday.

You can watch Gina Silva's report in the video player to the left.

Adrianna Bachan, 19, of Santa Barbara was killed and Marcus Garfinkle, 19, of Scottsdale, Ariz., was seriously injured around 3 a.m. Sunday when the motorist ran a red light and struck them just north of the campus at Jefferson Boulevard and Hoover Street.

Garfinkle was the one pulled off the car before the passenger got back in and it sped away.

"He was heartless, lacked courage, had no regard for human life. This individual should certainly be behind bars," police Detective Jimmy Render said after a press conference. Render did not know how fast the car was traveling at the moment of impact but noted there were no skid marks on the road.

Garfinkle was in serious but stable condition Monday, officials said. His injuries were not specified.

Bachan's fatal injuries were to be determined at autopsy, Render said.

Both students were freshmen, USC Vice President for Student Affairs Michael Jackson said. Bachan was majoring in environmental studies and Garfinkle has not chosen a major, the Daily Trojan, USC's student newspaper, reported.

Bachan's mother stood near the crosswalk Monday screaming at passers-by for help in solving the crime.

"Please if you saw my daughter being killed, please help me," Carmen Bachan shouted at dozens of students as they passed by on foot, skateboards and bicycles.

Police said there were four or five witnesses to the hit-and-run, which occurred about 3 a.m. as the students were crossing Jefferson to return to their on-campus housing after attending fraternity parties in the neighborhood to the north of the university. None of the witnesses saw the car's license plate and the type of car was not clear. Police said it was a late-1990s to early 2000s Honda Accord, Lexus or Toyota Corolla.

The car has a cracked windshield and a damaged front end and police hoped a member of the public or a car-repair shop worker might spot a vehicle of that description.
