Rockstar Games has excitedly announced that its smash-hit Grand Theft Auto IV is headed for the PC this fall.
The game, which has sold more than 10 million copies since its release on April 29, was originally available only for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It will be available on PCs as of November 18 in North America and on November 21 in Europe. Mac users will have to wait a bit longer.
The hugely-anticipated announcement from Rockstar opens up GTA IV to millions of eager players who have been a bit reluctant to sell their kidneys and firstborn children for a next-gen video game console like the Xbox or the PS3. According to Rockstar, the PC version of the game will feature an exclusive multi-player version, a brilliant move for the game makers, considering that a sizable amount of players who already have the game for the Xbox 360 or PS3 are likely to buy it for the PC as well.
"We are very excited to be releasing the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV," said Rockstar Games founder Sam Houser. "The whole team is dedicated to bringing an amazing gaming experience to the PC. The game looks and plays beautifully on PC and we can't wait for people to play it."
What most people don't know is that Grand Theft Auto began on the PC. The series didn't really explode, however, until Grand Theft Auto III, thanks to the introduction of a new 3D engine that brought you into the game rather than confining the view to a top-down, bird's-eye perspective like the previous two games. The previous full-edition installment of the GTA franchise, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has sold almost 250,000 copies on the PC in North America alone.
