Rockstar Games has excitedly announced that its smash-hit Grand Theft Auto IV is headed for the PC this fall.
The game, which has sold more than 10 million copies since its release on April 29, was originally available only for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It will be available on PCs as of November 18 in North America and on November 21 in Europe. Mac users will have to wait a bit longer.

The hugely-anticipated announcement from Rockstar opens up GTA IV to millions of eager players who have been a bit reluctant to sell their kidneys and firstborn children for a next-gen video game console like the Xbox or the PS3. According to Rockstar, the PC version of the game will feature an exclusive multi-player version, a brilliant move for the game makers, considering that a sizable amount of players who already have the game for the Xbox 360 or PS3 are likely to buy it for the PC as well.

"We are very excited to be releasing the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV," said Rockstar Games founder Sam Houser. "The whole team is dedicated to bringing an amazing gaming experience to the PC. The game looks and plays beautifully on PC and we can't wait for people to play it."

What most people don't know is that Grand Theft Auto began on the PC. The series didn't really explode, however, until Grand Theft Auto III, thanks to the introduction of a new 3D engine that brought you into the game rather than confining the view to a top-down, bird's-eye perspective like the previous two games. The previous full-edition installment of the GTA franchise, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has sold almost 250,000 copies on the PC in North America alone.

Links updated in the FSF.

Decent game, I don't play games on anything but PC (aside from older ps2/n64/snes/nes games), so this was my first exposure to it.

I've seen nothing but complaints about constant FPS drop and poor coding. As well critiques on the SecuROM software and the two *required* online services - windows live and rockster social lounge. And apparently, you cannot save the game in single player mode without logging into Windows Live.

I guess I won't be buying it.

I played the game and loved it, experiencing problems only with some cut scenes. I'm missing 0.5% though, and I am totally bummed by that.

Anyway, someone asked for help on the resolution hack and I figured it wouldn’t hurt to make a post instead of a PM, so here is what I did to play at 1280x1024 on my ATI x1900xt.

Load up the game and use up all your memory in the video settings. I had 512mb to use which gave me a full draw distance at 800x600 on low settings. Raising the detail setting caused more harm than good, so I kept the detail distance at 20 and lowered my draw distance to 80 for a decent balance and a measly 17 FPS. I could of gone with medium quality, but wanted the best draw distance.

Save and exit the game and then go into the properties of the game shortcut you use to add on some command lines to the comment. In the properties of a shortcut, it should be right after the exe file in the target field or, maybe, in the comment area. I use Xfire, which has an additional parameters field you use.

Here is what I put: -width 1280 -height 1024 -availablevidmem 0.95

That is all I did to get it to work properly and look better than the ingame would allow me to use. Here is the GTA IV forum with all the information you should need if this doesn’t help you out: http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=384473

*edit1 - On second thought, I think the extra parameters go outside the quotation marks of the source executable file. The same place you would enable a console for cheats is where you want the new commands, and I do believe that means they should go in the target field of the shortcut's properties.

I've been using xfire too much, I guess.

All that shit I wrote about may be moot now.

Among the new patch fixes are more graphical options. You can DL via the site or via Windows Live.
