predictions for final standings/postseason?

Depending on injuries, the Oilers will come in 6th in the west. Hopefully they start their push before the last month of the season like they have the last couple of years. For the amount of talent they produce from rookies and for their last playoff run, McTavish is a hell of a couch when he puts his foot down. Hopefully this year they take what they got and keep in solid standing throughout the season.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Detroit gets the President's Trophy.
Hopefully Pittsburgh toughens up and can make a solid playoff push. My dream match up for playoff finals would be Montreal/Pittsburgh vs. Edmonton.

Detroit is obviously loaded but after that I think its pretty wide open. Any number of teams could finish behind them in the west, probably Dallas is favourited there but San Jose to Chicago to Anaheim to someone else could easily be second best in the west.

The east is even more wide open. People are saying that Montreal is the favourite but if Price struggles (remember Cam Ward?) then they certainly can't win it. Pittsburgh is definitely worse off then last year. With losing players to FA and now having their 2 best defencemen injured. And who knows how Washington will do now? If Theodore plays like an MVP again then they could win it.

The Blue Jackets improved their D with getting Backman, Tyutin and Commodore, but might not have done enough offensively to finally get into the playoffs this year. They signed forwards Huselius, Torres, and Umberger, who should help, but I don't think they will have enough secondary scoring. They should be able to come in second behind Detroit in their division.

that. makes. no. sense.

Actually, I read that he's supposed to be in stellar shape this season. They're saying he worked out harder this off-season than he has since he came into the league and maybe at 36 (right?) he realizes he should, but I'm very keen to see how he plays.

Yeah, I said keen.

And... tomorrow, baby!!! I gotta order my Center Ice. Is it really only $40 with DirecTV? Do I need another reason to love that I left cable? Plus, I got NFL Sunday Ticket for free (haven't used it though).

Sens actually look pretty good, I like this new coach. But as always they're having goalie problems so far... I predict them coming 5th and losing in the semis or quarters. I think it will be New York vs Anaheim in the finals.

Pollo
10-09-2008, 01:29 AM
I definitely think Anaheim will be a much better team w/o all the distractions we had last year plus Teemu and Scotty returning midseason, and hell ... we barely missed out on SJ for the Pacific crown. what I don't like going into the season is the demotion of Bobby Ryan -- give the kid a fucking chance to play in the NHL. he can't stay in the AHL forever, and I know he's ready. apparently it's due to financial circumstances -- fucking Burke for this cap space mess. I think he's looking to deal Marchant, but I suppose no takers. Ryan shouldn't be down in the AHL for long.

Normally I like to be impartial and think about which teams have the best shot. Detroit seems like the obvious choice. Pittsburgh seems to have lost a bit.

But fuck all your teams. Every one of them. Right up their fucking ass. Especially the faggot Rangers.

All I care about is a few more shutouts and the number 552. After that, "fatso" will officially become the best goalie ever. And since Patrick Roy's legacy will include teaching his son how to be an on-ice thug, I think that "Blowdeur" will be the better of the two.

Apparently, Clint Malarchuk hasn't been through enough

The tale of then-Buffalo Sabres (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/teams/buf/) goalie Clint Malarchuk's near-death experience is hockey legend: On March 22, 1989, Malarchuk took a skate to the throat (http://www.letsgosabres.com/pressbox/fullstory.php?newsid=10240) in a game against the St. Louis Blues (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/teams/stl/) at Memorial Arena Auditorium (Ed. Note: Duh) slicing open the largest vein in his body and filling the crease with blood. It was the Richard Zednik (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/1449/) injury-times-ten-thousand; SportsCenter's video commemoration of the incident forever remains not for the squeamish (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT4PenDwiPo), but mandatory viewing. Sadly, accidental misfortune appears to be Malarchuk's legacy. From the Buffalo News comes word of another near-tragedy: He shot himself in the chin with a .22-caliber rifle. (http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/sabresnhl/story/458823.html) Officers were dispatched to the Malarchuks' home at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday after his wife reported her husband accidentally shot himself, according to reports. When deputies arrived, the paper said, he was sitting on a bench next to a horse tack storage room, bleeding profusely from his chin and mouth.
Malarchuk's wife said when she arrived home from work her husband was in the backyard, and said he had been shooting rabbits with a .22 rifle. She said Malarchuk stood and placed the rifle butt on the ground between his legs and the rifle discharged, striking him in the chin. He reportedly was belligerent with paramedics and with health center staff, refusing treatment.
Malarchuk is now the goaltending coach for the Columbus Blue Jackets (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/teams/cob/), according to the paper. And after what he's been through, it's nearly understandable that he'd refuse medical treatment for buckshot to the face -- that's merely a flesh wound.
The accident story sounds plausible. But considering what Malarchuk was doing before the incident, part of us wonders if he was hoodwinked when one of his targets reappeared dressed as Groucho Marx. (http://www.netzkobold.com/uploads/pictures/elmer_fudd_bugs_bunny.jpeg)

4-0 bitches

Absolutely awesome on the penalty kill late in the game. Two shorthanded goals and locking them down in the third period. I'm a little troubled by this slow start stuff, seems like almost every game now they've started out slow in the first and turned it on in the second. It's worked so far, but if they spot a 2-3 goal lead before they get their shit together, they might get in trouble.

I can't complain much though, 4-0 for the first time in franchise history. And ruffdog, I haven't forgotten about our bet (http://archive.gorillamask.net/showthread.php?p=2988803#post2988803).

well if you're going to fire your coach, might as well do it as early as possible and not pull a move the Brewers did firing Yost three or so weeks before the playoffs.

but even with Chicago's rough start, if Savard was really on thin ice, they should of fired him in the offseason and not deal with this now.

Why bother going through training camp if you're just going to fire the coach after 4 games? Also, Savard must have seen the writing on the wall when the Blackhawks brought in Quenneville to "scout" during in the offseason.

and that's my problem -- it puts pressure to do well later on in the season when teams will only excel better. the Pacific division is arguably the toughest division in the league, and the Kings and Coyotes aren't as bad as some people make them out to be.

ever since this team dealt McDonald to St. Louis, this offense just hasn't looked the same.

EXPANSION? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? If you want to put the Thrashers or the Panthers or some other pathetic Southern franchise in Toronto, fine, but the NHL is already bloated with too many teams and has been for years. Well, I think it WONT be the Pens in the finals... I agree with Montreal, but I wouldn't be surprised if Pittsburgh did get there. My dark horse is Washington for obvious reasons, only if Theodore returns to last years season-end form. I have an eerie feeling Edmonton could make a return to the finals if they can get some solid goaltending for the entire playoffs (assuming they make it), but in all likelihood it will be the Red Wings, Sharks, or another dark horse being the Blackhawks IF they can add some significant piece during the trade deadline... but only if they keep Khabibulin as I wouldn't trust Huet in the playoffs.

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Blues goalie Manny Legace (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/hockey/nhl/players/1241) left after one period Friday night with a hip injury that occurred when he slipped on the carpet placed on the ice for Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

The Alaska governor dropped the ceremonial first puck before the Blues hosted the Los Angeles Kings (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/hockey/nhl/teams/kings). A narrow carpet walkway was placed from the gate at the Blues bench to center ice for Palin, her husband and two of her daughters.

Just before the ceremony, Legace was the first player onto the ice for St. Louis. A team official pointed to the carpet. But Legace said the official moved his own foot from the carpet just as Legace stepped down, causing the carpet to slide.

Legace fell, then gingerly made his way to the crease.
After Legace's mishap, the official rolled up enough of the carpet so other players wouldn't have to step on it.

Trade deadline moved back

Scratch out that March 3 trade deadline date that was officially released over the summer in the NHL's critical dates. It's been changed.
Sources tell ESPN.com the trade deadline will now be a day later on March 4. It should be announced sometime in the next week.
The trade deadline, as per the CBA, must be 40 days from the end of the regular season. But that fell on March 3 and 12 games are to be played that night. The league promised GMs light fare for trade deadline day, which is the reason for the switch.
The league went to the NHL Players' Association and asked whether it would be willing to move it. As it turns out, neither side wants a lot of games on trade deadline day. The league offered March 2 (one game) or March 4 (two games) as options.
Sources said the league would have preferred March 2 but the union chose March 4.

Carbon copy hit of Steve Moore on Markus Naslund. Should we assume then that someone is going to break Weight's neck?

It was a good hard hit. Sutter is the reason he is hurt. Weight did nothing wrong. Sutter went low, reached for the puck and weight caught him.

Injuries happen, if it was intentional then get him for it. But for something like this, nothing should come of it.

http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/19203-Alexander-Ovechkin-leaves-Capitals-to-be-with-grandfather-in-Russia.html

ARLINGTON, Va. - Alex Ovechkin will miss at least one game while in Russia to spend time with his ailing grandfather.
The NHL's reigning MVP caught a flight home Monday morning and will sit out the Washington Capitals' game against the visiting Nashville Predators on Tuesday night. The Capitals were not sure when Ovechkin would return to the team.
"We know he won't be here tomorrow," Capitals spokesman Nate Ewell said Monday. "But we don't know beyond that."
Washington's next game after Tuesday is Saturday at the Buffalo Sabres.
"I'm sure we'll know more as the week goes on," coach Bruce Boudreau said.
Ovechkin, who led the league in goals and points last season, discussed the situation and his trip with general manager George McPhee on Sunday night.
The star winger hasn't scored a goal in the past six games and is tied for fifth on the Capitals with five points this season.
"He had to go and he wanted to be near (his grandfather), but if you know Alex, he doesn't want to leave his teammates," Boudreau said. "So that's always a struggle, but in the end, he knows what he needs to do - and that's family first."

Dougie didn't do anything wrong. If Sutter didn't bend down to chip the puck it would've been a clean, hard hit. It's not even keeping your head up as much as it is bad timing. I wish all the best for Sutter.

The game was pretty entertaining though, back and forth and fast. Too bad the outcome was so shitty.

Fucking Thrashers. I feel like pitching a Superhuman tantrum.
Don't worry.

I'm sure I'll pitch one of my own when the Thrashers beat us on Thursday. I already know it's gonna happen.

Why, WHY did we have to play them after a 7-0 loss? I know they're gonna come out pissed and play a strong game, and the Rangers are gonna think it's gonna be an easy win. It will lead to a Rangers loss.

From TSN:

FORBES NAMES MAPLE LEAFS NHL'S MOST VALUABLE TEAM

EW YORK - For the third straight year, the Toronto Maple Leafs are the NHL's most valuable team, worth US$448 million. The Leafs increased in value by nine per cent and easily were valued ahead of the New York Rangers in Forbes' annual rankings. The Rangers are worth $411 million.
Third on the list were the Montreal Canadiens at $334 million, followed by the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings ($303 million) and the Philadelphia Flyers ($275 million).
But the biggest increase in value was made by the Pittsburgh Penguins, who made the Stanley Cup finals last spring and boast stars Sidney Crosby (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=4093) and Evgeni Malkin (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=4686). Pittsburgh is worth $195 million, up a whopping 26 per cent.
The next biggest gainers were the Calgary Flames, up 24 per cent to $203 million, and the Minnesota Wild, who improved 21 per cent and are worth $217 million.
The average team value was $220 million; by comparison, the average for NFL teams this season was $1 billion, according to Forbes.
At the bottom of the list were Columbus ($157 million), the New York Islanders ($154 million), and Phoenix ($142 million). The Coyotes were the only team to go down in worth, by three per cent.
Toronto also led the list with $160 million in revenues, followed by Montreal ($139 million) and the Rangers ($137 million).
Ominously, 12 teams showed a negative operating income, including the Flyers (minus $1.8 million), and Boston Bruins (minus $3 million) - both top 10 franchises in total value.
