I posted that Greatest Lineup thread on old GMF, it was fun I thought. Talking in the NL MVP thread I brought up the topic of best players in a given generation (usually done in 5 or 10 year periods, sometimes overlapping like 1990-2000, 1995-2005, etc). Then we got into modern day players and the greatest right now so to combine ideas...

What would be your greatest AL and NL lineups at each position, were you putting a perfect theoretical 'All Star' team out there who you think will be stars for years to come.

For me:

AL:
C: Joe Mauer, though Mike Napoli sure looked good in limited playing time
1B: Miggy Cabrera or Kevin Youkilis
2B: Dustin Pedroia
3B: ARod
SS: Jhonny Peralta or Michael Young
LF: Carlos Quentin
RF: Most of the 'very good' RFers, Vlad, Mags, Dye, are all getting older. Probably Markakis.
CF: Grady or Hamilton, you really can't go wrong. I'd say Grady as he's a bit better, a bit more proven, a bit younger, and with a less tumultuous past, but either one is amazing.
DH: Huff and Bradley are 30 and 31. There really aren't any young DH-as-a-position people out there - Huff, Bradley, Ortiz, and Thome are the only dominant playing time DHs. I guess this position doesn't really need to be filled.

NL:
C: Go with slightly more proven talent in McCann? Newer stars like Soto, Doumit, or Martin? Really quite a lot of NL catcher talent.
1B: Pujols
2B: Chase Utley
3B: Chipper was crazy good this year, but is old enough I'd likely go with Wright (he's only 25, jeez)
SS: Hanley Ramirez
LF: Holliday. Braun is good, Holliday is crazy good
RF: Andre Ethier?
CF: Beltran, but he's getting older. Who's next, McLouth??

Wait, are we allowed to move around OF (because NL RFers suck compared to LF and CF)?

I think ninja just wanted to put Braun out there.

But corner OF are PRETTY similar. Not identical, but pretty similar.

Hell, you could almost make the NL team just through the NL Central:

starter, backup (bold designates from the Central)

C: Molina, Soto
1B: Pujols, Lee
2B: Utley, DeRosa
3B: Wright, Ramirez
SS: Ramirez, Reyes
LF: Holliday, Braun
CF: Kemp, Ankiel
RF: Hart, Ludwick

Molina? Seriously? I know you love the Cards but you know better.

Ummm...did you see his stats this year?

And his defense is second-to-none. For a catcher, I prefer defense to offense. Plus he is still really young.

Geovany Soto pisses on Yadier. And Yadier likes it.

Yeah, I saw his .740 OPS. And I still wonder Huh?

No love for McCann who is younger then both Soto and Molina?

I actually didn't realize how old Soto is/how young McCann still is.

So I'd put McCann over Soto now. Molina would still be my starter though. I love a catcher who can completely shut down the other team's running game.

Yes, I did. Did you? McCann slugs over 130 points higher than Molina.

And his defense is second-to-none. For a catcher, I prefer defense to offense. Plus he is still really young. Value is value is value. McCann is a lot better...and he's younger.
