STEVENSVILLE, Montana (AP) -- About 90 elementary school students in Montana have started a series of rabies shots after a parent let them touch a dead bat that was later confirmed to be diseased.

The mother of two students gave presentations in five classrooms and allowed the kids to touch the dead bat last week. She offered each student who touched the bat a sanitary wipe.
The exposed students will receive six shots of anti-rabies vaccine.
Stevensville Elementary School officials say they will use liability insurance to pay up to $70,000 for the exposed children to be vaccinated for rabies (http://topics.cnn.com/topics/Rabies). The overall cost could surpass $150,000.
The school has since set a policy requiring that anyone visiting the school obtain a visitor pass.
Ouch, rabies shots hurt like hell and cost a fortune. In fact they must be getting a discount because when my sister and her husband had to get them it cost a little over 5,000 for the two of them. That would be at least $225,000 for 90 kids.

If everyone in Montana turned into a vampire, would anyone care?

Five classrooms worth of kids. Not only is the mother a dumbass, but what were the five teachers thinking?

I bet you would care. Because you'd have a whole state of gun-slinging vampires hunting your ass.

Um so why was a lady with no qualifications giving a lecture on a dead animal? Oh wait that was just Sarah Palin. LOL
There's a reason there should be a parenting test. Chalk another one up that would have failed and been "fixed".

Correct me if I am wrong:
Rabies is transmitted by a bite.
The bat was dead.
Dead bats don't bite. (Yes, I know, it could be a vampire bat. Ha Ha.)
The kids touched the bat.
No kids were bitten by the dead bat.
There is no risk of rabies transmission.
Everybody is over-reacting.
The parent was stupid for bringing the bat in.
The teachers were stupid for allowing the kids to touch the bat.

Rabies can be transmitted by merely having contact with saliva actually. And its a horrible slow way to die.

Agreed on all points.
As to the transmission...
Transmission
Rabies usually is transmitted through infected saliva as a result of a bite from an infected animal. Rarely, it is transmitted by viral contamination of a fresh wound, through a scratch, or through contamination of a mucous membrane (i.e., eyes, nose, mouth). There have been reports of rabies being transmitted through the air in bat-infested caves.Seems like you would need to get bat-spit in an open wound for it to be a danger.

How many elementary schoolkids have scratches? How many chew their fingernails, how many chew their pencil. You only have a limited numbers of days to get vaccinated after exposure, as once it sets in there is no cure.
Those little bastards are dirty as shit. Bats too.

As I mentioned earlier my sister and brother in law had to get a round of shots as well. The day my sister went into labor my brother in law woke up to what he thought was the cat clawing his butt but turned out to be a bat gnawing on his ass.
That was a crazy day, and the doctors where pretty much freaking.

Rabies victims have to live with an irrational fear of water their entire lives.

Yeah the doctors where debating if the baby would need vaccinated too. Luckily it was not false labor because the procedure had he been in her womb would have been, well not fun. I heard talk of a really long ass needle.
I want to call my band Ass Needle
If Tara gets rabies her new username could be "Young Yeller"?
