Anyway, the upshot is that Top Gear was going to be back on 26 October but then there turned out to be some sport on or something and as a result the new series will now start on Sunday 2 November.

They put the Veyron and a new Zonda around the track and tried to drive 3 cars 750 miles on 1 tank. Not the most exciting challenge, but still very entertaining.

I was shocked that the Jaguar made it. What didnt shock me was the fact that James went so slow he lost the race spectacularly.
Australian Top Gear sucks the big one.

Doubtful.
Every motoring magazine in Europe is raving about the Fiesta (it's been voted Car of the Year, if memory serves); and with the financial shape FoMoCo is in, they're in no position to buy off the entire European motoring press.

Still cheaper than a Polo, and better than the Corsa. I mean, what else is there? A Fiat, maybe, but they're awfully hit and miss, reliability wise (still far better than 10 years ago, when they were all solidly in the "miss" column)...

I hate the way Corsa's handle and wont buy Italian so Fiat's out. So it's either Ford or Volkswagen.

I know I use every opportunity I get to bash American cars, but a 2.6 litre Cadillac CTS V6 with under 30k miles for about €12k does sound appealing. In a year or two, you'll be able to get them for €8-9k or so...
If American build quality doesn't cause the doors to fall off, that's awesome value for money.

Lulz.
Adding fuel to the fire is GM's new Vice President Bob Lutz. Still, his enthusiasm is tempered by years of European automotive experience. Automotive News recently reported him stating that General Motors has canceled plans to export the Cadillac CTS to Germany because its interior materials and workmanship are not as high in quality as competitors Mercedes-Benz and BMW, and the dollar is too high against the euro. He said the quality of interior elements from external suppliers - such as the seats, instrument panel and steering wheel - was not good enough for the German luxury segment. Lutz also said he is generally unhappy about the quality of U.S. built interiors, and he is working to change that.

Fuck you, I'd give my left nut for a Fiesta ST. I'd even take a Focus ST, sadly neither will be sold stateside... though I have caught rumor of the Focus ST swimming the pond sometime between '10-'12.
Wtf do we Americans have to do for a fun to drive, economical AWD car that doesn't cost 35K+? Seriously, I'd possibly consider agreeing with Taters on something if it would give us a shot.

Top Gear to return for Vietnam special!!!
http://transmission.blogs.topgear.com/2008/12/17/nam-we-were-there-man/ (http://transmission.blogs.topgear.com/2008/12/17/nam-we-were-there-man/)
http://bbctransmission.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/richard_jeremy_vietnam.jpg?w=300&h=143Series 12 may be over, but there’s one more calorie-filled slice of Top Gear goodness to look forward to before the end of the year: a 75-minute Vietnam special on BBC Two on December 28 at 8pm.
Following last year’s trip to the North Pole, this time the boys are off somewhere slightly hotter… and the truly scary news is that they’ve ditched cars in favour of motorbikes. Yes, you’re going to get to see Jezza on two wheels. That’s like seeing Alex Ferguson in a Manchester City kit. And high heels.
Still, judging by The Mole’s sneak preview it’s going to be awesome. The challenge, as ever, was a simple one: get from the bottom of Vietnam to the top: a mere 800-mile journey.
http://bbctransmission.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/james_vietnam1.jpg?w=300&h=143With a budget of several million Vietnamese Dong to spend on their bikes, things were looking easy. But it turns out that several million Vietnamese Dong translates into ‘roughly enough money to buy a packet of crisps’, so the boys’ motorbikes ended up being, well, not quite the mighty steeds they had in mind.
Richard ended up on a Russian-built Minsk, James on a Honda Cub, and Jeremy - because he has no idea about anything with less than four wheels - a very fetching green scooter.
Of course, there were plenty of daring and deeply hilarious challenges along the way. Sadly the Mole has been sworn to secrecy, but we can reveal that the boys were in uncharacteristically generous gift-giving mood to each other. Large, bulky, difficult-to-carry-on-motorbikes gifts. Well, it’s the thought that counts.
http://bbctransmission.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/richard_vietnam1.jpg?w=300&h=143So, if you do nothing else this Christmas (apart from eating too much, then overcooking things on the post-lunch booze and saying something regrettable to a prudish relative), make sure that you watch the Top Gear Christmas Special, on BBC Two, 28 December at 8pm.
Be there.
More on the Top Gear Special this time from show producer Andy Wilman...
http://transmission.blogs.topgear.com/2008/12/22/our-nam-special/ (http://transmission.blogs.topgear.com/2008/12/22/our-nam-special/)
http://bbctransmission.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/clark_nam1.jpg?w=300&h=143Vietnam is all wrapped up with a ribbon round it and is now sitting under the huge Christmas telly tree, waiting to be unwrapped on Sunday 28th, at 8pm. I hope everyone’s too pissed or fat to move off the sofa, because, and I know I say this every time, it’s quite a good one.
The Vietnam special is also our first foray outside the hour. The final running time ended up at 75 minutes, which was a big worry initially, because one of the most sound and wise sayings in television is “There’s nothing that can’t be improved by making it shorter”, or something like that.
It’s a maxim we stick to religiously - lots and lots of useable stuff ends up on the floor - but in the case of Vietnam, we simply couldn’t fit the actual basics of the journey into 60 minutes; we’d have had to lose whole days completely, so 75 it is, and believe me it rattles along at that. So, Christmas tip for anyone downloading illegally: get plenty of bits and torrents in or whatever it is you do.
As for the story, for those who like to see presenters suffer there is some good hardship, especially for Jeremy in the first three days, who was crapping himself before he set out.
But then your first ever bike ride and it’s the length of Vietnam - you would be. And his bike was rubbish. But as the journey unfolds it settles down (for a while) into what I think is a good buddy movie.
I am reminded actually, watching it back, of those two brilliant bell ends in Sideways, except in our world the only time anyone gets their leg over is climbing back on a bike.
http://bbctransmission.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/clark_nam21.jpg?w=300&h=143On the subject of the bikes I suppose, looking back, the big risk in this show is not the fact we’ve ditched cars for bikes - for one outing you won’t miss four wheels, and it does put Jezza in a world of pain. No, the biggest risk in this show - and students of film will spot this if they’re not mullered on Malibu next Sunday - is that Vietnam is the one Special that’s more about the guys than it is about the transport.
In the Polar film there is a simple premise - can a car get to the Magnetic Pole, and the whole film hangs round that; what the guys do is just bonus entertainment. Likewise in Botswana the spine of the film is “Can ordinary cars go where four wheel drive cars go?” and likewise whatever the lads get up to along the way should be secondary to that premise.
In Vietnam though, the transport question isn’t that strong, because as Ewan and Charlie have proved so well, you can go almost anywhere on a bike. This means the narrative of the film is a bit more skewed towards the three guys: e.g. Can Jeremy make it without killing himself? Can the others make it without killing Jeremy? So please forgive us on that one. We haven’t gone self indulgent, and as soon as we find another titanic vehicular challenge we’ll be there.
Anyway, that’s enough from me. Watch it and let us know.

just wanted to resurect this thread a bit, i recently finished the most current season (12?), and i was pretty impressed by the vietnam special. pretty cool views of the countryside and quite funny, as usual. the part where clarkson makes may take that ship around on the back of his moped is fucking priceless.
So you basically bumped this thread to say nothing at all. Amazing.

Top Gear has pulled out of a daredevil stunt that would have re-enacted the final scene of The Italian Job, saying the cost would have been "massively prohibitive".
The scene sees robbers stuck at one end of a coach with their gold precariously balanced at another.
Top Gear's James May visited the Royal Society of Chemistry after saying the show wanted to re-enact the film's cliffhanging ending following a competition by the Society to solve the puzzle of saving the gold and the robbery team's lives.
But a spokeswoman for the BBC show explained: "We thought it would be brilliant to recreate the Italian Job scene, so we were disappointed when, having spent a lot of time researching all the options thoroughly with the Royal Society of Chemistry, we found that the cost of the stunt was massively prohibitive for one short film in one programme.
"We've got a set budget and we think we can make that money go further elsewhere."
The Society said the bus was to be hung from the lip of a Midlands quarry and it had found volunteers of men and women from within its own ranks.
A statement from the Society said: "Our volunteer chemists were happy to board the bus in order to push the frontiers of human knowledge.
"We are shocked that a team of self-proclaimed petrol-heads retreated from a great opportunity to celebrate the most important British car film ever made."
It added: "We are very disappointed. The Top Gear office said something this morning about budgets not being big enough but we thought that they were raring to go since the start of negotiations.
"We have all been ready here to take on the challenge and it's pretty deflating to discover that they have backed out after having been so enthusiastic."

God, I hope so....I really wish that I could just spend my everyday life trying to get into the lottery to get into a taping of their show, even though they think we Americans sound absolutely ridiculous and some of our hicks did try to kill them during their muscle car race in the states

there's a lot of talk how that's not him anyway, in spite of the reveal... something to do w/ the taping schedule and the logistics involved since he's attending pretty much every one of the f1 races etc etc... not sure if true either way
