what's the best way to go about making/importing free ringtones with a PC for the 3G?

Is there not a built in program that cuts mp3's to whatever length you want them and sets it as your ringtone?

misterfatt
08-19-2008, 06:22 PM
no. the crafty nerds at apple decided to design the iphone so that you can only install purchased ringtones from itunes (buying the song costs 99 cents, and choosing 30 seconds of that song to turn into your ringtone costs another 99 cents). a friend of mine managed to find a loophole by creating and importing ringtones via garageband on his macbook.

does anyone know of a similar way to do that on a PC?

Nope.

Also, I thought .exe files ONLY work on windows, and that for us to use it, it would have to be .dmg?

Well that's what I thought but someone else told me that all I had to do was to move the exe file from the crack folder to the exe file in the other folder for it to work properly.

Syndicate

Yeah... That .exe is NEVER going to do anything on a Mac.

I do not know of any and, given Apple's hostility of any app that even comes close to emulating a core app such as mail, itunes, et,c it may not happen at all.

Is there any way to get my music files off my ipod? My hard drive died and had to be wiped.

itunes just wants to wipe my ipod and start from scratch. Which I really do not want to do.

And that podplayer program is giving me a run time error, telling me my qtocontrol.dll is outdated, and to use the version that came with my application (whatever the fuck that means).

I really dont want to lose 6 + gigs of music and start from scratch.

well fuck. i'm a dumb ass. i've had my fucking iphone for like 2 weeks and tonight i dropped it in a beer. fuck. anyway, i pulled it out fast and have been told to let it dry. weird thing is, when i pulled it out of the beer it was functioning but the back light was shot to shit. i could hardly see the icons on the screen. i've been told that that is due to the water. meh. my question is this, does anybody know any tips to get this shit back to normal? i've heard about putting it in a bag of rice to help draw the water out, does this work? help!

it's prolly too late now but kitty litter works. One problem, and I don't know if they do this on iPhones, is that many cell phones have a liquid indicator spot on it that shows if it fell in water. So if you try and get warranty work done and they see the water indicator has changed colors you're fucked

SharePod is easy to use and works! Heres some of the main features:

Add & remove music and videos from your iPod
Add, remove and edit playlists
Add & remove album art
Copy music, videos and playlists from your iPod to PC
Import music/videos into your iTunes library, including playlists and ratings
Tag editing
Drag n' drop to and from Explorer
Simple, clean interface
Quick to load and use with no unnessary complicated features

And whats more, SharePod is completely free! SharePod was designed from the start to be lightweight, quick and responsive, it has all (well hopefully most...!) of the features you need and none of the features you dont.

they have it. it's in the earplug socket: http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2007/10/iphone-water-se.html

my friend's phone fell in the sink and went to hell, but luckily for him he had his headphones plugged in. didn't know about the sensor. they checked it at the store, didn't see a problem and they replaced it for him. turns out the headphone plug somehow managed to prevent the sensor from getting wet. so, either always have the plug in, or just make some other plug for it that you always keep in there.

there are actually 3 water indicators on an iphone. 1 in the ear plug hole, and 2 inside the phone on the screen mount. i took mine back to the apple store i bought it at and they first checked the indicator in the headphone hole. it was red. they told me i was SOL. i then asked how much water it takes to get those to turn. the answer was "just a drop". i told them i had talked on it in rainy weather a couple times and asked them to check the two indicators inside the phone. they opened it up and bingo, one was red and one was white. i was just nice about it and ended up getting a new phone for free. i've also heard of people covering up a red indicator w/ liquid papaer on a toothpick. interesting.

Yea, I don't think you can do that for iPhones, but I know for all my past phones and my current Blackberry, I cover that indicator up with duct tape. I suggest you all do it, keeps the warranty legit.

fwiw, i used to drop my first gen iphone all the time, like have it on my lap in the car, and then i'd forget and get out of the car and the phone would go crashing to the pavement. but anyway, there are loads of inexpensive yet effective silicon and acrylic cases that would protect it fine if you are that worried.

It's hard to say at this point whether we should point the blame at NVIDIA, Apple or right in between the two corporate campuses, but it seems that an uncomfortable amount of 17-inch MacBook Pro (http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/04/macbook-pro-17-inch-unibody-review/) owners are having some serious issues with their GeForce 9600M (http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/nvidia-geforce-9400-m-chipset-gets-official/) graphics card. For those unaware, there is actually a 9400M (http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/16/nvidia-gets-official-with-geforce-9400m-gpu/) in there too, but word on the street has it that the random green lines and nasty artifacts are only showing up when the more potent card is kicked into action. Most folks are saying that a reboot solves the problem momentarily, but eventually it returns to bother, annoy and sadden new owners. Anyone else out there pulling their hair out over this? Here's hoping a firmware update is all that'll be needed to bring closure to yet another NVIDIA-Apple related fiasco (http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/10/apple-says-some-macbook-pros-hit-by-faulty-nvidia-chips/).

I have the 9600m in my HP and shit runs perfect.

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/03/iphone-fire-20090304-600.jpg (http://www.aromanthought.com/)

It's hard to call two incidents of some occurrence around the world a trend, but, when those incidents both involve an electrical device catching fire spontaneously, it creates a situation that's hard to ignore -- especially when that device is the iPhone. On Saturday, Italian blogger Tim Colbourne was charging his 3G handset and, after three hours, it sparked and caught fire at the base. Tim did a little investigation and found a case of a Swedish handset doing the same thing back in 2008, making us a little concerned that there could be more melted chargers out there. Apple replaced that earlier phone after something of a fight, and while we're hoping they'll be a little friendlier here, we're also hoping this gives Cupertino another bit of incentive to go ahead and switch over to micro-USB already. All the cool kids are doing it (http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/21/omtp-agrees-on-micro-usb-standard-for-mobiles/), and you don't see their cables catching fire -- usually (http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/25/atandt-quickfire-could-overheat-spontaneously-burst-into-irony-if/).

The HP Touchsmart looks nice as while though, so I might have to do some research. For the same money, I get a smaller display (by 2 inches), but a TV tuner, which would be awesome to have.

And you're probably right. I just a built a HTPC that's a beast for less than $600. However, I never cared about Apple's design awards, or whatever else...it's all about OS X. That's what sealed the deal for me when I made the switch. OS X has balls of steel. Everything else aside...it all comes down to the OS.

Well maybe some of us don't count our pennies like you do.

In my case, there was a $200 difference between my MacBook Pro and the two other PC laptops I was looking at. So there wasn't a substantial difference...at least not big enough to make a difference for me. OS X's power and stability sealed the deal for me. Plus, I run Logic Studio which is only available now for Mac.

But to each his own.

This is such a retarded argument, I switched over to Apple in 1996 and have been very happy with it ever since, OS 8/9.1 - onwards. People who like Apple like Apple, those who don't, don't.

You're never going to convince either side they're wrong.

I like the way OS X works, I like the integration it has with the hardware and yes, the stability is superb. OSX does crash, but it's once a month if that. Yes, the relatively low risk of viruses is great but I am aware OSX is not immune.

I appreciate the flexibility of PC-based systems, especially gaming etc - but as I'm not a gamer it's not an issue.

Oh, brother. We can already tell this one's going to be a fun, enjoyable journey to follow. Shortly after Apple's 17-inch unibody MacBook Pro (http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/04/macbook-pro-17-inch-unibody-review/) began making its way out to early adopters, small legions of owners have reported all sorts of bizarre graphical glitches. While we first assumed (http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/05/nvidias-geforce-9600m-causing-issues-in-17-inch-macbook-pro/) that it was NVIDIA's GeForce 9600M causing all the mayhem, further investigation has led us to believe that faulty fan controls could be the culprit. Granted, all of this is just speculatory at the moment, but it seems that some users have noticed that their fans aren't kicking into high gear when they should. 'Course, some folks have seen those RPMs spin up while the funky lines and psychedelic colors remain, so it's still hard to pinpoint a definite root cause. We're told that folks from NVIDIA and Apple are spending their weekends working to figure it out, but we can't help but be reminded of an eerily similar (http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/30/macbook-air-users-still-faced-with-overheating-problems/2) string of events with overheating MacBook Airs just last year. Hopefully a fix will be out soon; till then, just pretend those erratic colors are some new curative feature.

An Ohio mom is filing a lawsuit against Apple on behalf of her son, whose "iTouch" popped in his pocket and proceeded to torch his pants. He had to be treated for second degree burns on his leg, had a hole burnt through his pants pocket and got an underwear melting to top it all off. Also, according to the lawsuit, "He continues to suffer from both physical and mental conditions which will cause him to suffer pain, mental distress, emotional distress, and otherwise for the rest of his life." Poor kid! In addition to Apple, the lawsuit seemingly randomly names 10 Apple retail employees, and wants $150,000+ and attorney fees in damages. While we've seen a couple burnt charging cables (http://www.engadget.com/tag/iphone,fire) of late, this is the first we've heard of an iPod touch "popping," and it's especially odd because the lawsuit claims the iPod was turned off at the time of the incident. Whether or not that's true, we'll be certainly keeping an eye on a trend developing here. When it comes to our children, burning pants are everyone's business.

Let's say you're syncing your iPhone photos from the folder C:\Pictures on your hard drive... you'd just create a new folder in the Pictures folder with the pictures you want inside it.
Then sync and it'll create the folder on the iPhone.

I jailbroke an iphone the other day at work for a guy. The first step is formatting the phone, so yes, it wipes it clean. I asked the guy if he had it backed up and he said, "Don't worry, I already did step one and lost over 200 contacts." Sucks to be an idiot and not read or ask first.

It was really simple though. Opened itunes with the phone plugged in, held shift and hit reformat in itunes, and it looked for the image I just downloaded. After that, ran the jailbreak software. Midway through I had to do a bunch of holding the power/home buttons at different intervals, but then it did the rest itself. A lot easier than I thought it would be.

Have you tried a program like iDump to get the shit off your phone? I know it works for iPods, not 100% for iPhones. Here's a link for iDump, but just go to downloads.com and type in iDump, a bunch of different ones show up.
http://download.cnet.com/iDump/3000-2169_4-10407429.html?tag=mncol

Here's the Xilisoft trial that says it works with iPhones. I'm sure you can find a cracked version somewhere on the interwebz.

I live in Spain, but do not want a Spanish OS or keyboard, and this seems to be a problem, everytime I click to buy on the UK version it ships me back to the Spanish version of the apple store, its quite infuriating. Its also €150 more expensive buying the same laptop in € as in sterling. And about €300 more from $ (but the US site specifically says it doesnt ship abroad)

So I've noticed a few glitches with the phone. One is that when you type emails there's an auto type option and there's no way to turn that off. Also, the auto type oprion talks if you dont cancel the word fast enouh so that can suck. When you're in maps, the GPS is off by a few blocks in some places. Also on the map app, there should always be a true north. When I pressed the home screen it didnt turn on the phone to unlock (that has happened twice). Either than that, the camera is pretty tight, the voice control is sick--they could expand the shit out of that if they wanted. ans I wanna get into some aps. Oh and it sucks how there's no way to quit an app (is there?). When I'm done with an app, I just go back to the home screen. Then, when I want to go back to that app, it goes back to the last thing I did on that app (it doesnt start from square one). Sometimes I want that, other times I want to quit an app and start from scratch.

mongo
06-26-2009, 08:37 PM
1. it's a smart t9. keep typing and canceling and it'll learn what words you use most. it gets better after 3 or 4 weeks. (or sooner depending on how often you text)
2. the reason maps is off is because it's not fucking gps. it's triangulation. sorry.
3. the rest is just iphone idiosyncrasies. you'll get used to that shit.

Caps lock works, you must be doing it wrong. You'll know if you did it correctly because the shift arrow will turn blue--you really have to double tap it just like you would double click a mouse.

As for arrow keys, you're SOL, another week and you'll be used to it. That's why they put the cursor in a magnifying glass.
