Hey fuck sticks...

anyone out there have any experience with 2wire? I've been using them for the past 4-5 months now and I fucking hate them. Well, last night I had a blue screen and an auto restart. I figured it was just a memory dump but when I got back to the desktop I noticed that I couldn't connect wirelessly anymore. It could read the networks around me but when I tried to connect to mine it said 'signal too weak', even though it was the largest signal around (-72db) ... anythoughts on why this shit won't connect via the wireless hub?

I got it connected through the windows wireless (that took me all fucking morning after a 3 hour fit last night) just not the 2wire. Any ideas/suggestions?

Update all software and drivers, it sounds like you might have a corrupt driver or something. Then power cycle everything in your system.

I have 2wire through AT&T U-Verse (fiber is badass) and I have not had a single problem with it.

THat's actually what I have (att uverse with fiber) So far all it ever does is change IP address every other hour (which of course kills my internet connection) and now this bullshit.

Ironically it started right after I did the new windows update that had like 8 things to d/l.

hmm

also, according to the log...these are the files that caused the shut down.

Files that help describe the problem

If you have not tried it try rolling back your system to before the last set of updates.

Sorry this won't be incredibly helpful, but it is what I always suggest to friend with computer issues. Reinstall XP (or verify problem with another computer)

Does anyone know a good *nix program or windows program that allows you to get the IP address of a wireless AP's in your broadcast range. For example say i have a wireless card and i'm NOT connected to an access point, but i want to find out the IP address of a particular access point or just all the access points in my wireless range. Is there a particular program or method anyone uses? Or is the best way to just capture packets and disect them?

Try this: http://www.angryziber.com/ipscan (http://www.angryziber.com/ipscan/)

I carry one of these things around but it does not give IP address info

i need an ip address... i think, i can get mac addresses and packets from all the servers around me, but what i'm actually trying to do is inject arp and icmp request to an ap that i'm not connected to. And all the tools i have require an ip for a destination. So maybe a better question would be how do i send an arp request or icmp to a remote ap

NetStumbler http://www.netstumbler.com (http://www.netstumbler.com/) does do some network address probing on WLANs that it picks up.

Air magnet works well too. We used to use both of those to track down people running private networks on campus without disabling wireless. They didn't want it interfering with the wireless we provided.

is there a way for me to use 2 wireless routers together to have my wireless range bigger? can i have the modem and one wireless router in the basement and then another router or access point on the 2nd floor so that the signal will be stronger upstairs?

Look in the GMF archive. I forget who it was, but they explained how to set up a Linksys router as a range expander (repeater essentially). I know they had to download like a firmware update and fuck with the settings, but yeah, it is possible.

EDIT: Here's the link Tone Loke posted and got his to work with: http://lifehacker.com/software/how-to/turn-your-wifi-router-into-a-repeater-265142.php

I have a question, and I think it belongs here.

I have a file that is being saved on a network drive that I'm able to view from any PC in my private network, but I'd like to be able to view it from anywhere. How would I do that?

VNC FTW.

VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. It is remote control software which allows you to view and fully interact with one computer desktop (the "VNC server") using a simple program (the "VNC viewer") on another computer desktop anywhere on the Internet. The two computers don't even have to be the same type, so for example you can use VNC to view a Windows Vista desktop at the office on a Linux or Mac computer at home. For ultimate simplicity, there is even a Java viewer, so that any desktop can be controlled remotely from within a browser without having to install software.

VNC Enterprise Edition
A much enhanced version of VNC, developed for use in enterprises of all sizes.

Designed and built from the ground up by the original inventors of VNC, Enterprise Edition provides secure, robust and easily-administered remote-control with a minimum of fuss. Existing Free Edition users considering upgrading may find this feature comparison useful. There is also a handy datasheet (250K pdf).

Cliffs: How best to connect desktop and wireless laptop to maximize desktop feed?

I have a brand spanking new desktop and a shitty laptop that I want to have running wirelessly so the wife can go on and check emails and whatnot and leave me alone to the big boy machine. I don't want to compromise the connection to my desktop. How should I connect this shit? Can I easily connect the desktop directly while allowing the laptop to go wireless from a router? Eventually I have a 2nd desktop that I'd like to fix and do something with as well.

Is a Gigabit Ethernet Switch useful in any way?

Just get a nice wireless router. It'll have ports to plug in your wired connection.

Gigabit Ethernet will only benefit you if you have 2 (or more) systems connected via ethernet that both have Gigabit ethernet ports. Will definitely not help if you're running standard 10/100Mbps cards. Your New shiny PC could possibly have Gigabit ports, however if it's the only one, not gonna help.

Using the wireless router is the easiest and safest way to run both computers on your network. The router will have it's own firewall you can use to help keep your intranet safe. Basically all consumer wireless routers have 4 wired ethernet ports and thus will accomodate your future addition of your other system.

If you're planning on getting NEWER laptops or wireless devices perhaps look for an "N" router for both increased range and wireless speeds. Otherwise a standard G router with your current ethernet/wireless cards should be sufficient.

My router keeps cutting in and out. I have comcast internet and I have no idea why it cuts out. When I have the modem connected directly to my computer it works fine, but when its in the other room connected to the router it cuts in and out, especially when doing downloads.

It's a linksys router, and the people in the geek squad said that this one worked with Comcast, the old one I had supposedly had problems specifically with Comcast and a few others, but the newest Broadband G router should work.

Check for firmware updates. I'm not sure about the G, but I've been seeing more and more lately about their newer N routers having issues with DNS as well as some other issues. Not sure if firmware fixes them. My dad actually got one and recently returned it.

I've always liked Linksys in the past and as much as I've learned to disregard for the most part recommendations from the **** Squad, Linksys NORMALLY are pretty good routers. Not sure what's up w/ the newer ones I'm hearing about.

Yeah, don't always believe what the retards at Best Buy tell you. I'd call Comcast. I know sometimes they have to know what hardware you are using and hit some buttons on there end. It may also just be a bad router.

I don't know anything about networking. I have a wireless router with my xbox plugged into it and my PS3 and laptop wireless. Everything works except the playstation. It won't stay signed in for more than 2 minutes at a time. I need to configure my router and I don't know what I need to do or how to do it. Ideally I'd like to configure both my 360 and PS3 for optimal performance. It's a linksys router.

so I just inherited my grandparents computer and I want to network it and my regular pc together... now I know sweet fuck all about setting up a network, but I have a router and they're both connected to it, and I ain't getting anything...

the second computer incidentally isn't able to get an internet connection either with or without the router, so that's probably got something to do with it, I'd imagine

PS both computers are running XP

Yeah you may have to replace the network card, but on both pcs:
control panel->network connections->(left hand side) set up a home or small office network.
Run through that wizard and you should be good, as long as the card isn't dead on the one.

So I've been having this problem with my 'network'. I have a wired/wireless router and on the network I have a my PC and my PS3. The thing is I can't be on the internet with both at the same time... actually, if I go on one, then decide I want to use the other, I have to shut down everything (modem, router, and kill the power to the systems) and restart it all.. It really sucks and I don't know what to do. I've called up my ip and done a bunch of stuff with them, buy they're more retarded then I am and can't help me. One error I keep coming up with on my PS3 is a "DNS Error" and with the PC I get "Network cable not connected" or another "DNS" problem. I was wondering if anyone could help me or point me in the right direction to help myself. Thanks.

Look up port forwarding on the PS3. I had a similar problem until I forwarded some ports.

I believe it was on this forum, but previously someone turned a router into a repeater. I believe what I need is a DD-WRT firmware upgrade, but to whomever it was or if you yourself did it, just what all is involved and how difficult is it. I don't need necessarily a step by step, but the basic steps involved would help. A friend of mine just moved into a new apartment and no one right next to him has wireless, but there are several coffee shops and such that do provide it but are close to a block away. He has a regular Linksys wireless G router and I remembered someone here before setting one up with mirrors all around it and shit.

I just got my wife an inspiron 15 and I all I got was the basic dell wireless mini card. Seeing as I dont know shit about wireless on laptops I thought I would ask. She is picking up a weak linksys and a few others but linksys is the one that always shows up. Is there anything I can buy to boost up these signals or speed them up? And if I get whatever it is will it help boost other signals?

thanks. dont no if thats what I have to do yet, but it put me in the right direction to find out some things I can do to at least help a little. The problem now is that I have a dynamic ip and can't set (can't figure out how to set) a static ip for my ps3 so that my router will always allow access to that ip

If the signal is yours you would have a couple of options, first move the wireless router closer (not always a option) or buy a wireless access point and put it in the room where your wife sits so the signal is relayed. If its a signal you are borrowing from a neighbor you could buy a cantenna http://www.cantenna.com/ then ask your friend or relative to hook this to the wireless router and beam it in your direction. They also make outdoor antennas that mount to the house. Hope I was of some assistance.

What have you got for DNS? Did you manually set the DNS? I would set static IP's for the pc and the PS3 and use my ISP for the primary and secondary DNS.

i want to set static IP's for them but having trouble figuring out how to do it. keep trying different things but it hasn't worked out too well. just doing things by trial and error

OK so I successfully did this. Flashing the router and getting it set up was rather easy. I tested it in my house on a laptop, connected to the "repeater" and got online just fine. New question is, is there a way to view the networks it is repeating? In my house, it's probably just repeating my router. It's for in my friend's apartment who gets a bunch of different signals but can only connect to the one.

If I take my laptop to work and they have an unsecure wireless network, when I connect can they see where I go and how long I am on and all that jazz?
