Anyone got a Sidekick? I just changed from AT&T to T-Mobile and got a BB Curve. I love the Curve but I'm wondering if anyone's used both devices and which one they prefer.

Since no GSM US carrier has that (only Sprint is getting it, at least so far) an unlocked GSM version of one of those is way too expensive. If I'm going to put that much money down for a phone, I'd rather have a Nokia N82.
But that is probably the best phone a US carrier is currently offering, at least until the Touch Diamond Pro comes out.

I had AT&T for awhile, it was pretty good. T-Mobile has been the same, if not better.
I wouldn't choose Sprint mostly because I don't like the selection of CDMA phones out there. Besides the LG Dare, I can't think of one CDMA phone I'd want (well, I guess the Touch Diamond too).

Google phone to release on 10/22, and start at $179.
If it was on any network but T-Mobil I'd say it'll take alot of business from the iPhone, but the new high speed network T-Mobil just built for smartphones only exists in 21 cities. The phone's going to work on their current network, but not well.

Yea, I've become accustomed to typing out messages on a QWERTY pad. But T9 is pretty effective as well. I think the best looking phones are sliders because they use almost all their landscape for the screen.

Okay cell phone tech's. I have a sprint touch which I can not unlock and use in Colombia because everything there is sim card. So what are my options for taking a phone down there? I've got T-Mobile and my contract runs out in December. Got the Curve now which is an excellent phone overall. The G1 and Android look to have huge potential, but I'm gonna try to make myself wait to go that direction. Maybe by then other models will be out featuring Android's open source goodness.

The pictures make it look bad, but it's still a sexy beast. It's almost as thick as a Razr (just a little thicker) so it deceptively looks like a simple phone. My sister loves the look and the burgundy backcover that she might get my phone plan.
As a toy, I've been playing with it in a different way than my Mogul with a keypad. Less typing online, less buttons. The touchflo is nice. And the accelerometer is bad ass.
I was used to my Mogul with the WM6's plain ol interface . I'll probably replace when the Touch Pro comes out in 2-3 weeks.
Cons: POOR battery life...5 hours drains it to 10-20%. Gets hot during youtube streams. No keypad...virtual keypad is adequate but tons slower. Some lag with 3-5 apps (which is much better than the Mogul but you expect more for current tech).

Whatever GSM phone you get, you'll likely have to unlock it before using it in Colombia.

No, it flips back to vertical even if the phone is horizontal. I noticed that landscape doesn't turn on for everything. Need to download a program for landscape unlocked on all programs.
I tried to make a reply on here with the keyboard, but gave up on it because of some annoying bug.
Stock settings is not good for surfing and typing.

I got mine from Sprint's online website. A co-worker of mine got the GSM version shipped straight from Hongkong. Diamond won't come out to GSM for a while (2 months?), but you lucky bastards will get the Touch HD first.

The Nokia N95 is widely regarded as the best phone in the world, but it doesn't have a qwerty keypad. The good Nokias that have qwerty's are the E71 (which has a North American version, but no carrier has picked it up for some reason), and the E90, which is really expensive but is basically the business version of the N95.

I refuse to go read the dick-sucking forums or the apple fan bashing shit so I'll ask here (ironic cuz dick sucking is our past time) I would like to know if the 3g version is unlocked yet or not. I see stories that it is, then when I go to search I cant find shit or it's just an article from last year on the Orig. iPhone... also, if it's not unlocked, it's just the ATT carrier, right? Ok I kinda just got a lil happy since I have ATT Uverse...
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. phone company AT&T Inc plans to eventually link Apple Inc's iPhone to its high-speed Internet and video service called U-verse, and introduce new features like using the phone as a remote control.
At an event on Monday to showcase some recently developed technologies that are not yet being marketed, AT&T emphasized that in the future, consumers should be able to use their phones, computer and television in more interesting ways.
"We're looking at the whole landscape, of what people use, and what's out there in the home," said AT&T Chief Technology Officer John Donovan, adding that some of the services may be launched by the end of the year.
AT&T is currently the sole U.S. carrier for the iPhone --an advantage over other mobile providers like Verizon Wireless, owned by Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc, as well as over cable television providers.
For example, consumers will be able to listen to their voice mails on their screens, and download shows from their digital video recorders onto their iPhones.
They also will be able to use their iPhones to navigate channels like a normal remote control, and for entertainment purposes like virtually hurling tomatoes at the TV screen using iPhone applications.

Tired of staring at the fancy-looking display on your iPhone? Are you longing for a theme that fits more with your style? Does that style happen to only include the colors black, gray, and yellowish-green? Then you might be interested in this new theme for Apple's little device that essentially makes it look like an old-school Game Boy.
Designer, Rob Sheridan, recently put together this iGameboy theme (available for download at MacThemes) to give the gadget that distinctive look that most gamers from the '80s will recognize immediately. He also designed numerous icons for some of the phone's more popular programs, like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. There are even two different varieties to choose form: one with Game Boy's signature buttons on the bottom, and one without.
Download this theme and relive the classic days of gaming -- except this time, AA batteries won't be worth their weight in gold if you run out.

I just use my phone for mainly texting. But I've tried texting on the iPhone and it's so hard because it's touch screen so I always end up mis-spelling everything -- but it has spellcheck. And it messes up what I want to send out. My GF has the LG rumour and she loves it. But I reallly don't like how it looks. It's kind of ugly.

I have and have had the iphone for over a year now. you have to be retarded to break the screen. i've dropped mine numerous times from varying heights and angles and it has yet to break. it's a lot more durable than people give it credit for.
a lot of people in this thread will tell you to go with something that is more "hackable" and "customizable", but let's be serious, there's a slim to none chance that you'll be doing any of that.
as for the keyboard issues, after 3 days of using my iphone i was 100% used to it. I rarely screw up anything and type fairly quickly. The phone uses both a predictive input and a dynamic (it learns) dictionary.
as far as pictures/sms go, even when I had a phone that could do that, i never did.
major drawbacks:
no video
mediocre camera
no flash
I expect flash to come to the iphone in the next 6 months, the other 2 would require new hardware. basically, if you live in an area that has 3g coverage, the iphone is the device you want.

I found this extremely interesting.
From the Freakonomics Blog (http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/12/08/what-do-the-iphone-and-jonathan-franzen-have-in-common/#more-3455).
What does WalMart have in common with Oprah Winfrey?
The writer Jonathan Franzen is best known for his 2001 novel The Corrections. He carries a very strong reputation among the high-end literary set, and is as opinionated about said set (in the affirmative) as he is scornful of low-end culture.
This same bifurcation can be seen in the reaction to his work. On Amazon.com, The Corrections (http://www.amazon.com/Corrections-Novel-Jonathan-Franzen/dp/0312421273) has garnered 1,013 customer reviews, a very large number (http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/2006/05/30/1000-amazon-reviews/), with an average rating of three stars. That’s right down the middle between the lowest possible rating (one) and the highest (five). Consider the headlines of two consecutive recent entries: a five-star review titled “A Modern Classic” and a one-star review titled “A seemingly unending stream of word vomit.”
Soon after The Corrections was published, Oprah Winfrey chose it as her Book Club selection. Franzen did what I believe no author has ever done: turned her down. He seemed to believe that Oprah’s imprimatur was declasse (http://www.mobylives.com/Oprah_v_Franzen.html), that it would harm his literary reputation. This decision was made easier by the fact that the book was already selling very, very well.
I thought of this dust-up when I read that Apple has plans to sell its iPhone in WalMart (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=a4YIU21gLaSY&refer=us). For $99. This makes WalMart only the second mass-market retailer (after Best Buy) to sell the iPhone.
It is hard to think of a modern product with an image that runs more counter to a modern retailer’s image than the iPhone to WalMart. I am sure that Apple gave a lot of consideration to the risk of taking its high-end product into the most mainstream store that’s ever existed. What kind of psychic damage might this do to the existing high-end users? If the iPhone sells well in WalMart, does the cool sheen that has been built up over countless media impressions start to seem a bit duller? And even if so, what sort of strategic move — what sort of higher-end iPhone, that is — might Apple be preparing in order to let its high-end faithful maintain their cool-sheen advantage?
For what it’s worth, Oprah Winfrey has had a much better past few years than Jonathan Franzen, at least commercially speaking. But that was plainly not the level that Franzen cared about. Apple, meanwhile, needs to care. It’s a publicly traded company.
It’s also interesting to note that WalMart won’t start selling the iPhone until perhaps the day before Christmas. This might seem like a gigantic lost opportunity — or perhaps a way to not overemphasize the new relationship when the lights are the brightest.
On the other hand, with way too many people giving way too many gift cards for Christmas (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/07/magazine/07wwln_freak.t.html?ei=5090&en=970d53de24147ae4&ex=1325826000&adxnnl=1&partner=rss&adxnnlx=1228735276-QSg1WloSXYpT/1AVN6yBfg), the WalMart iPhone is perfectly positioned to capture the after-Christmas shopping binge.
Does this in fact mean Apple is planning on something a little more upscale and pretentious in the next 12-18 months, and they're trying to flood the market with the iPhone now?
I don't see how this can do bad things for the iPhone, because more items in the market will mean more apps and better coverage. But it could damage it's image with the crowd that currently carry them in their pocket.

I guess the issue I have here is not with the IPhone itself and it cachet in the market but that it is so locked in to AT&T. I think that the relationship has been far better for AT&T then Apple. If Apple were serious about flooding the market with a $99 Iphone then I think that they would not have extended the contract with AT&T to 2010 and would have released the phone to the other providers.

http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/12/08/anatomy-of-a-rumor-wal-marts-99-iphone/
The blogs and business wires (http://www.techmeme.com/081208/p9#a081208p9) were buzzing Monday morning with two juicy iPhone rumors: 1) That Wal-Mart would begin selling iPhones three days after Christmas and 2) That a low-end model would sell for $99.
The first, as we reported nearly three weeks ago, is true. (See Wal-Mart’s post-Christmas iPhone sale.) (http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/11/19/wal-marts-post-xmas-iphone-sale/#more-2710)
The second, as near as anyone can tell, is almost certainly not true – although it seems to have taken on a life of its own, most prominently in a Bloomberg.com report (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=a4YIU21gLaSY) published Sunday evening.
On Monday morning, MacRumors (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/12/08/99-wal-mart-iphone-seems-unlikely/) reported that, based on leaked Wal-Mart training and advertising material, the $99 iPhone rumor was “unlikely.” MacBlogz (http://www.macblogz.com/2008/12/06/sources-say-4gb-iphone-is-not-happening-just-a-rumor/) went further: “Based on every piece of information we’ve heard, and direct information inside AT&T, this is not happening.”
So how did the story get rolling?
It started with the Boy Genius Report (http://www.boygeniusreport.com/). a blog with back-channel contacts at AT&T (T (http://money.cnn.com/quote/quote.html?symb=T)) that have often proved reliable. In fact, the news that Wal-Mart (WMT (http://money.cnn.com/quote/quote.html?symb=WMT)) would be selling Apple’s (AAPL (http://money.cnn.com/quote/quote.html?symb=AAPL)) iPhone originated with Boy Genius, although the date that sales would begin was fuzzy until a Boy Genius reporter got his hands on an AT&T memo (http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/11/18/iphone-3g-coming-to-wal-mart-on-december-28th-select-sams-clubs-as-well/) spelling out the timeline for in-store training and national rollout. (link (http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/11/19/wal-marts-post-xmas-iphone-sale/#more-2710))
The $99 iPhone rumor, although originating from the same site, had a very different feel to it. The Boy Genius report (http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/12/04/apple-to-sell-a-99-4gb-iphone-at-walmart/) posted on Dec. 4, started like this:“We just got a tip that in addition to the iPhone 3G actually making its way to Walmart, as we exclusively told you (http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/10/11/iphone-3g-coming-to-a-walmart-near-you/), there will be a 4GB model priced at $99 with a 2-year agreement. We’re not putting our stamp of approval behind this one just yet as the tipster isn’t listed in our BGR’s Guide to respected Ninjas handbook, but it does make you think, doesn’t it?” (link (http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/12/04/apple-to-sell-a-99-4gb-iphone-at-walmart/))
The $99 rumor got conflated with the Wal-Mart story in subsequent reports — after all, they both came from the same blog, right? — and received what was taken by some as confirmation when Shaw Wu, an analyst who follows Apple for Kaufman Bros., addressed it in a report to clients:“While we are not sure of exact timing, we think a $99 Apple-branded cell phone is inevitable.” (link (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/12/05/a_99_apple_branded_cell_phone_is_inevitable_analys t_says.html))
Wu’s remarks were picked up by Bloomberg’s Connie Guglielmo, and by Monday they had made their way to the top of the online news food chain at Techmeme.com (http://www.techmeme.com/081208/p9#a081208p9).
In fact, the iPhones at Wal-Mart will be sold at a discount, as VentureBeat (http://venturebeat.com/2008/12/08/the-iphone-is-coming-to-wal-mart-and-will-be-cheaper-by-2/) reports and the ads leaked on MacRumor confirm: for $197 – $2 off the $199 list price.
The Boy Genius, for his part, hasn’t backed off his initial report, but neither is he fully endorsing it. “Waiting for some feedback from a couple sources,” he wrote in reply to an e-mail inquiry. “At this point I just don’t know.”

It's not like the $99 price tag is that big of a deal, if you're going to buy an iPhone you're going to buy an iPhone, $100 won't stop you.

I'm on Tmobile as well but am waiting for the Blackberry Javelin. My enterprise rep gave me a G1 to play with for a couple of weeks and I liked it but the Blackberrys are still my overall favorite phone.
I have a Curve right now, and it works really well and is a good overall phone. But the thing is the OS is kind of bland, and there's nothing in the form of customization and new apps. But since Android is open source, I think it has amazing potential.

Potential is wonderful. Actual delivery is better. The new blackberry OS is a massive improvement over the curve (which is what I currently run) and there are tons of apps out there. I may feel differently in about 2 years when the 3rd or 4th version of the Iphone or the 2nd (or 15th, knowing google) version of Android is on the market

I've just been given a samsung g600.
But it just picks my micro sd card up as a 0kb full card.
Its a 4gb no name brand (hc class) It works fine in other things.

Phone probably can't handle it. Phones have limits just like digital cameras. My SCH-i760 only recognizes up to a 2 gig unless I installed a patch. So either get a smaller card or try to find a hack for your phone.
EDIT: As suspected, 2 gig max.

AT&T is following in Sprint's footsteps by experimenting with in-home cell phone boosters, otherwise known as femtocells. Sprint has been selling its own under the Airave (http://reviews.cnet.com/cell-phone-and-smart/sprint-airave/4505-6448_7-33226984.html) brand. Femtocells are made to boost the cell phone signal via your high-speed Internet connection; think of it as your very own cell tower.
AT&T is planning to make its own version available in a trial market next year (http://tech.yahoo.com/news/ap/20081209/ap_on_hi_te/tec_at_t_cell_boosters), and hopes to improve 3G performance in addition to enhancing voice signals.
As for other carriers, Verizon has mentioned that it's looking into femtocells, while T-Mobile has gone its own route with T-Mobile @ Home (http://reviews.cnet.com/cell-phone-and-smart/t-mobile-hotspot-home/4505-6448_7-32486222.html), which lets you make calls over Wi-Fi. The T-Mobile @ Home service can only be used with UMA phones that can switch between GSM and Wi-Fi networks, however.
I'd consider picking one up if the price was semi-reasonable. I get terrible reception at my house.

I've been searching around all day so some links would be nice. I'm on xda and pdaphonehome. I'm looking for some good rltoday skins. I have an iphone one currently and with it I'm missing some png's that are stopping it from looking nice. After updating to 6.1 I lost everything and I haven't messed with this shit since the day I got the phone. Getting s2u2 and rltoday setup and looking reasonable has taken me a solid 2 hours now. I have no xml knowledge except from today, copying/pasting/trying/failing/retry. Like I said, I finally got it looking decent, could really use a good word and internet png. Also, if someone could paste the code for s2u2 so it's the regular clock, not the 24 hour clock, it would be greatly appreciated.

Some generic iPhone one I found on xda. Got phm and edited the clock successfully. Working on the icons. Also installed musicid and shozu from your post in the fsf. That is true but I quit paying for insurance. Phones are tougher then they used to be. My old shit would break all the time. If you pay 5 a month for 2 years then the 35 you're paying 155 for the phone. In 2 years that phone will be about $70 on ebay since it'll probably be obsolete.

Well, Shozu is a carrier-independent program, so it has nothing to do with AT&T. You got the correct version for your phone, right? MusicID doesn't have touch capabilities. You don't have any keys on your phone to scroll through a menu?

Just incase you needed a way to get out of a contract with a provider you hated.
Just a tip for all of you bi-continent travelers, who spend much time visiting Colombia and saddled with a cell phone contract in the States....If you call your provider, and give them an address in Colombia, or elsewhere in this world, and state that the intention is not to be in the states during the duration of the contract, they are legally obliged to let you out of your contract...

I just had my Curve replaced. Claimed I lost it because I didn't want to have to crush it. In reality the camera stopped working and I took out the track ball to try to un-stuck it and couldn't get it back together right away so I got frustrated and said fuck it. $50 deductible and I think it's once/yr so I figured I'd slip in before the end of 08. It's not done by Verizon - it's done by Asurion or some shit. The insurance company. I entered the info on their website and got the replacement phone next day.

Yeah, that's a problem. If your phone were working properly, these messages would be defaulting to a folder called "Useless Fucking Garbage."

Did you buy a new phone yet? A phone that doesn't die when you step outside the 2 feet radius of its base?

Advantage: my current device has much improved range. Disadvantage: my styrofoam cup and wire model is incompatible with most cell providers.

Another thing that I don't like about this phone so far... is the word or letter count max per text. Can I change this?

Isn't that decided by your provider?

I had the Motorola Q with the same provider before and the character limit was like 250. Why is it different for the berry?

That was like months and months ago, maybe they changed their policy.

Your old phone probably just chopped them up into pieces for the recipient. I believe SMS is limited in size by the tech - not by the phone. MMS should allow much more length.

Yea, the standard limit for texts are 160 characters. But El, you can make it as long as you want, it's just going to break up the texts into 160 characters each until the message is sent. It's just letting you know how many texts it will take in case you don't have an unlimited messaging plan, and know if/how much you will be charged.

That's a pretty open-ended question. What exactly do you mean?
