i know this has been out for a while, but as i just got my ps3 at the beginning of september i've only just now bought it.

anyone else have this?

thoughts? opinions? anyone with experience with the online play?

arch, if you haven't bought this yet, mate, i'd suggest you nab it. i got mine from ebay for $18 shipped. took three days to get it (fairly quick), and i consider it a decent buy (and the only one if you want f1 action).

i started career mode last night, signed with mf1 (midland f1, which in 2007 turned into spyker ferrari, then force india this year), poled and won my first three races. the demo doesn't do this thing justice, but it's not a perfect game (by far). it'd be nice if studio liverpool would put out some updates or dlc on this.

i know codemasters (of grid and dirt fame) got the license for the next one, which is set to be released during the 2009 season and feature 2009 cars and rosters. hopefully they don't fuck it up.

I wonder how realistic it is. If you look at a Ferrari too hard, do you get a penalty? And if you drive a Ferrari, are you allowed to shoot at other drivers without anyone saying shit?

i think you're allowed to pause the race clock while pitting

No joke. When I was at the American F1 race back in 2004, our pit passes basically let us go anywhere....except for Ferrari.

Does this work with the G25 wheel?

I played it for a little bit a while ago. Not a bad game, but I think I am going to wait for the new one to come out.

Now that I see the release date is Dec 31/09??? I might just have to pick this up for some racing action. Prologue just isnt doing it for me since there isnt much i can do.

interestingly enough, no, but expect that feature for the '09 game from codemasters (lulz, j/k... i hope). i know that while racing in australia i wasn't able to pull a +2 second lap time on schumi/alonso as i had been able to previously at the first two races of the season. for those races i was able to be the first one out of the pits during quali, in each of the three sessions, do a single hotlap, park it, advance the time (run down the session clock) and proceed to the next one. i had to actually go back out with a minute left and pull a fucking hamilton-esque last-minute hail mary to keep from being eliminated from the session and claim pole.

and despite the fact that it's just a game... schumacher on my ass was not a pleasant feeling. i admire the man and his accomplishments, but i began to worry that he might try to put me into a wall just to end my string of victories. it was actually a great feeling... really immersed me in the game. it could have been any driver to be honest, as i had thoroughly pwned during the first two races. australia gave me issues, and was the first time anyone even got that close. thus, i suspect it was coincidence that it was schumi.

the race clock is only paused when you go into the system menus from a race menu. if you're going in to change the properties of the car (aerodynamic tuning for example) the clock continues as it would in real life. if you go into change the controller button assignments, the clock pauses.

Does this work with the G25 wheel?

it does indeed, but make sure everything is selected correctly in the game options (http://forums.logitech.com/logitech/board/message?board.id=steering_wheels&thread.id=4656)

Nice. I need to get a stand for that thing. That shit gets pricey though.

That'd be nice, a little too pricey for me. I'm thinking of trying a wooden dinner tray from Staples.

my friends tried that... if you end up sawing at the wheel a little too aggressively, when trying to catch a slide etc, the whole thing is all over the place. also, having the pedals stationery is a big plus w/ the contraption.

i've seen people build similar on the cheap using those pre-drilled angle irons that are used for garage shelving

yeah, that's the thing with my previous experience with racing wheels... it's hard to find a suitable mounting surface. thus i haven't even considered buying one until now. i've heard the g25 is absolute tits with regards to wheels, so that's the one i'm going for.

i'd love to create my own cockpit frame on the cheap, but i'm not good at that shit, so i'll prolly just end up buying one.

I might build one myself. I dont have much room, as my PS3 is in the living room, so I'd have to engineer something that would fold up.

i was playing around with the online features last night, and noticed it's possible to create a "room" for people to be invited, join, chat, etc. and launch into a game. might be a cool way to do a weekly battle through winter and have our own little championship run.

I think I might just have to pick this up this weekend. I picked up GT5P last night and started playing again, but finished it really quick. I just wish there were more good racing games out.

i'm excited for the codies to unleash a new f1 game next year... i expect nothing less than an absolutely brilliant fucking game, and the call from the fans is for this to be as much of a simulation as possible... not like grid or dirt.

I am hoping for a GTR2 type game.

I think the easy setting is too easy and the medium difficulty setting too hard, that's just me.

I don't like the car set-up features. I need a good 15 laps to get to know the track, after that I want to start setting up the car (plus I want to be able to save set-ups per track, real F1 teams do that). The "guided" set-up doesn't allow for that. The best F1 game (especially in set-up not being to hard or too arcade like) is still the 1998 F1 championship game from 989 studios. I hope next years game will be better.

Also the pit feature is dumb, if I wanted to be a mechanic in the pits I would design a "f1 pitmanager" game. I'm a driver not a mechanic.

that sucks about not being able to save track settings. there's always pencil and notepad option...

can you change your gearing or just suspension and aero stuff?

Yes you can, even tire pressures (which I think takes it a bit far), and you can save the game, but you can't save settings per track which sucks. I love tinkering with settings, but I need time to test the result.

On older games I would "test" on the track of the upcoming GP and then save the settings, load those for the "race" weekend and fine tune them there. Notepadding would take a while!

I always thought how cool it would be if the Gran Tursimo guys got the F1 license.

GT5P has F1 cars in it.

Also the more fine tuning you can do the better. It makes the game more indepth and not just a driving game.

BTW EB is fucking gay. They was $54 for this game used. Fuck that.

formula 1 games have always walked a fine line with fans. on one hand are the die-hards (like me) who want it to be as absolutely realistic as possible, both aesthetically and functionally. if it doesn't have the exact wheel dials, gizmos, etc. not only will i know but i'll be unhappy about it. if the front wing doesn't splinter just right it won't look natural. i know it's being a little unreasonable to basically expect a perfect game, but it's the little things that really make something shine.

then there are those who just want the experience and fun of blazing an f1 car through its paces at the nordschleife of the nurburgring, settings be damned. this person doesn't want to dick with the setup so much as he wants to just have fun in a semi-realistic setting. unfortunately, this is not the typical formula 1 fan, but instead is just the average-joe race game fan. so it's a question (as it always is) of staying true to the product vs. sales numbers. the fia and f1m have taken the guesswork out of it: fuck your sales numbers, but you're going to produce a solid, realistic game for the f1 masses.

if the codies can find the balance (like saving settings per track, forcing a "basic" but fairly accurate setup for newbs and revealing the advanced stuff in the harder difficulties) the next f1 game will be amazing. i am particularly fond of playing through seasons of an actual career (try-outs, test drives, etc.), but hope the codies give us ten seasons to play instead of the two in f1ce.

gt5 will not handle this properly. they have the ferrari in the game because ferrari licensed them the car in honor of their victories last year. while it would be amazing, the fia will not give two companies the rights to (essentially) the same game. it would be fucking amazing to play through the s license and then have to earn the f1 license (which i also think is called a super license) before competing in a real f1 calendar.

$54?! fuck eb. ebay, wal-mart, etc... $30 or less.

the problem w/ f1 being visually realistic is that the real cars change their appearace almost every season, so it's kinda hard for the developers to keep up, i think.

also, drivers/teams combos change just as often.

although there is no real f1 season per se, the all-f1-cars-only races that i've played on gt3 were very tough though i do admit i wish i could make changes.

i'm hoping to get the next f1 game whenever it comes out

I consider myself "hardcore", I go through all the practise sessions, qualifying and I always do the full race distance (alot of people don't), weather set to random, plus mechanical failure possibility, etc. But like I said in an earlier post, I'm a driver not a mechanic (so no goofy "pit games"), plus I need to be able to fine tune my settings and save them per track.

The career mode was pretty cool, but for me the "easy" setting was too easy, and the "medium" setting too hard. My driving style is more technical/progressive, which means it takes a little time for me to get used to the track. I'm not a natural like Senna, more of a Prost, hahahaha.
