Deftones Bassist Chi Cheng In Coma After Car Crash
The Sacremento Bee reports: Deftones bassist Chi Cheng is in a coma in a San Jose hospital following a car accident in Santa Clara on Monday.
The band's singer, Chino Moreno, reached by phone, confirmed the news but declined to give specifics.
"I don't know everything that's going on -- I just know it's very serious," Moreno said. "I'm on my way to be with his family, I'm pretty freaked out about it."
Cheng, 38, was born in Stockton and also is an accomplished poet. In 2000, he released a CD of his poetry, "The Bamboo Parachute."
The Deftones had been working on its sixth studio album, "Eros," set for a spring 2009 release. The Warner Brothers record label is expected to release a statement on Cheng's condition later today.
I'm looking for a site where I can identify classical music I don't know the name of. Maybe something with short snippets of the tunes?

All you have is a few notes you've heard? Best possibility I can think for a wide range of music is Amazon, since a lot of the classical samples used at last.fm are junk.
Random question from someone who knows nothing about rap:
Why do people pretend Lil Wayne is good? Is this an inside joke?

Internet radio has to pay performance rights (http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10052221-93.html) but broadcast stations get a free pass.
Billy Corgan, founder of the rock band Smashing Pumpkins, told Congress on Tuesday that must change.
"This issue is one of fundamental fairness," Corgan told lawmakers. "If the performance of a song has value to a particular terrestrial radio station in its airing, I believe it is only right to compensate those performers who have created this work.
"Simply put, if a station plays a song, both the author and the performer should be paid," he continued. "These particular performances must have value to the stations or they wouldn't be playing them."
Corgan was testifying on behalf of the Performance Rights Act, which "would close a loophole in copyright law that allows music radio stations to earn billions every year without compensating the artists and musicians," according to a statement from the legislation's backers.
The National Association of Broadcasters does compensate songwriters and music publishers and has for decades. It does not, however, pay record labels or the artists. The thinking has always been that free airplay promotes the sale of music which benefits those groups.
"We think this performance tax would decimate the radio business," said Dennis Wharton, an NAB spokesman. "The reality is record labels have used artists as a shield in this debate. We welcome a discussion on who has been more fair to artists: The foreign-owned record labels (Universal Music, Sony and EMI) or America's hometown radio broadcasters."
Web radio stations have complained for a long time that they are made to pay performance fees (http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10169355-93.html), when traditional broadcasters pay nothing. It should be noted that online services have said they believe in compensating music performers.
This makes no sense to me. Sounds like Billy is biting the hand that feeds him. The majority of people in the world hear a song on the radio and if they like it they purchase it. If the stations have to pay to play the music then they just won't. I am pretty sure record companies send their music to the stations to try and get it played. I remember a long time ago one of the stations in my area was paid to play that Kelly Osbourne tripe. And they made sure to annouce it on the radio right before they played it.

I think he's going in the wrong direction. Internet radio SHOULDN'T have to pay performance fees, it should be free just like regular radio.

Last.FM is going to start charging (http://blog.wired.com/business/2009/03/lastfm-radio-to.html) in countries outside of the US, UK, or Germany. Damn shame too.
The reason, according to a source close to the situation, is that ad rates are not high enough in other countries to cover the Last.fm's costs there.
