Ah, metal music.

If anyone can find a band more metal than Gorgoroth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorgoroth_%28band%29) I'd be awful impressed.
For an example of their metalositiy:

I badly want to see Global Metal, the sequel to A Headbanger's Journey by the same guy, Sam Dunn. They tour Israel and other places where playing metal is tantamount to high treason. Can't find a torrent or anything yet, though, as I think it's only been shown at a film festival or something.

Oh, and anyone heard of a Finnish band Misery Inc? If not, check them out:
http://www.myspace.com/miseryincband

They sound a little bit like Into Eternity to me (maybe it's the tradeoff of the power metal vocalist and the growler).

Anyone heard the new song The Haunted posted on their myspace yesterday? I'm not sure if i like it, pretty sweet riff, but the vocals kind of annoyed me. I don't know maybe it'll grow on me. Heres to hoping the new album is killer.

The Haunted has always been a band that has killer riffing for me, but the vocals almost always annoy me to no end. Dude's just kind of shitty at coming up with vocal lines, especially for verses.

Gary_Busey

Would you have metal without Zeppelin?
You wouldn't have metal without a lot of bands. Of course they're an influence, but that doesn't make them a metal band and that's what this thread is about.

Fuck, would you have Zeppelin without Robert Johnson? ROBERT JOHNSON IS THE BEST METAL ARTIST EVAR!!1! [/thread][/youreafaggot]

TheImpossibleMan
08-15-2008, 07:47 PM
The only people who think Led Zeppelin are even sorta-kinda metal are Zeppelin diehard fans who don't listen to metal. Led Zeppelin never even recorded a heavy metal song (though they came close).

Dragon
08-15-2008, 07:48 PM
Nah not so much but the Robert Johnson influence is understood. Fair enough. Laying the tracks for metal can be attributed to Zep.

The most important and universally popular metal bands are Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica, and maybe Slayer (depending on who you're asking). The most universally respected death metal group is Death, and the most successful progressive metal group is Opeth.

The most essential metal albums, in no particular order, are (band - album [genre])
Black Sabbath - Paranoid [heavy metal]
Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny [heavy metal]
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast [New Wave of British Heavy Metal]
Megadeth - Rust in Peace [thrash metal]
Metallica - Master of Puppets [thrash metal]
Slayer - Reign in Blood [thrash metal/death metal]
Death - Symbolic [progressive death metal]
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence [technical death metal]
Opeth - Blackwater Park [progressive metal/death metal]

I disagree completely. You've never heard Slaughter of the Soul? You're not allowed to talk anymore.stfu n00b! I actually sat down only a week ago and said "Okay, I WILL listen to Jester Race" and thought it was good, but not great. Moonshield and of course the Jester's Dance are great songs, but the rest are a little stale. They actually remind me of Mercyful Fate in the sense that the band is insanely good but the singer is pretty crap.

Black metal does seem to get a lot of love when it comes to "all time" lists. Having never really gotten into the genre, what are supposed to be the all-time classics when it comes to bands and albums?

Gary_Busey
08-16-2008, 07:48 PM
I'm not a big black metal fan. Just never really got into it. Some of the big ones would be Bathory, Burzum, Immortal, Blut Aus Nord and of course Mayhem.

Gary_Busey
08-20-2008, 05:33 PM
I guess I lean more towards death metal than anything else. Anyways, here's some albums I like.

In Flames - Jester Race
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Amon Amarth - Versus the World
Vehemence - God Was Created
Withering - Gospel of Madness
3 Inches of Blood - Advance and Vanquish
Bloodbath - Resurrection Through Carnage
All Shall Perish - The Price of Existence
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Acid Bath - Paegan Terrorism Tactics

Jason
08-25-2008, 06:12 PM
I don't know if you consider these all metal, but my favorites are:

Soilwork - Stabbing the Drama & Sworn to Great Divide
Diecast - Internal Revolution
All That Remains - The Fall of Ideals
Killswitch Engage - Alive or Just Breathing & As Daylight Days
Shadows Fall - Threads of Life

I tend to like metal with clean vocals atleast some of the time.

TheImpossibleMan
08-25-2008, 06:24 PM
Only band on there I've listened to is Killswitch, and they're metalcore.

I saw Killswitch, Soilwork, Lamb of God, and Devildriver last December. LOG is great too, but I didn't like DD.

Gary_Busey
08-31-2008, 02:09 PM
I'm not a fan of Devildriver or Killswitch really. Soilwork is pretty good, though they kind of rode In Flames's coat tails for awhile. I like Lamb of God, wasn't real big on their latest album, Redneck was a horrible song, but they've out out a couple really good albums and they do a great live show.

My top 10 list, in no order:

!t.o.o.h.! - rad a trest
drudkh - autumn aurora
grand belial's key - kosherat
negura bunget - 'n crugu
demilich - nespithe
gorguts - considered dead
judas priest - sad wings of destiny
deicide - legion
maudlin of the well - leaving your body map
morbid angel - altars of madness

Gojira is bomb. Honestly, From Mars to Sirius is my favourite metal album of the past couple years. The new single took a little while to grow on me, but I like it now. And also, I'm seeing them Nov. 7 with In Flames, 36 Crazyfists and All That Remains. That show is going to kick some serious ass.

Meshuggah has always been hit or miss for me. When they're good, they're dynamic and quite melodic (Straws Pulled at Random, Future Breed Machine). When they're bad/boring, they're just static and repetitive (New Millenium Cyanide Christ, Bleed). Plus, Kidman's vocals are so damn dull and monotonous.

On a side note, I'm happy to hear the Cynic album getting such a good reception. I'm trying to hold off listening to it until it actually comes out. I've already heard 4 songs in demo format.

I also think the original version of Evolutionary Sleeper was a lot better than the one that made it on the record:

Man, I love Kidman's vocals. Fredrick Thorndale (sp?) is a beast.

When I listen to Meshuggah, I think of robots. The lack of melody can be frustrating at first but I've come to love it. They also put very intense live shows.

Favorite works: Nothing, Catch 33, I

Sometime in the future (possibly as soon as Monday), my friend will be interviewing Luc Lemay on his radio program. You guys should tune in!

that's fucking awesome. link to where i can hear please and also, tell your friend to ask at least one, if not all, of the following questions:

1) what are his influences?
2) is he going to release his classical recordings on a cd?
3) what the fuck was going through his head when he made obscura?
4) any hope for something more brootal than his current project Negativa?
Lemay got back to my friend and said that he'd have to push it back a long way, possibly to January. I assume it's something related to the Negativa CD that is causing this.

Their influences are listed on Negativa's MySpace page, surprsing how many of them listed Dead Can Dance.

I wanted to ask: "Obscura is thought of as a landmark because of its uniqueness: it has been described as containing elements such as avant-garde jazz, noise rock, and of course technical death metal. However, despite the fact that [the bass player's name] and [the drummer's name] get song writing credits, it has consistently been described as Luc Lemay's baby. How true is this, and if it is true, how hard was it brining the others around to your artistic vision?"

I also want to ask what prompted the swap of drummers. As far as I can tell, the drummer switch was a disaster: They get a new drummer, record Wisdom, he kills himself, Gorguts breaks up, and now seven years later Negativa has yet to release an album.

I saw Mastodon in 2004, opening for Slayer, and they put on one of the most intense live shows I've ever seen. Great stage presence and they didn't take themselves too seriously.

That being said, I wouldn't listen to them because there is much more interesting music out there. I would like to see them again if they came with a decent supporting cast.

Really? I mean, I consider them one of the most entertaining and exciting metal bands to come out in a while. I'm not a huge fan, but it seems like this album is going to be their magnum opus.

So much of the metal, around 95% of it, I've heard bores the shit out of me or in some cases is interesting but not at all listenable.

It seems like people who post here are generally into tech/brutal death and black metal and not so much the progressive stuff. Not that I don't like technical death metal, I just like it in a more proggy form, ie. Cynic and Atheist.

I think it's safe to say that 95% of all music in any genre sucks. All the clones, rip-offs and late-comers. This is particularly true in metal.

My favorites (at this time):

Peste Noire - some of the most intersting french BM i've ever heard. sounds heavily influenced by baroque music

Summoning - Awesome symphonic BM with tribal-esque drums. Really worth checking out

Cynic - Traced in Air is definitely in my top 3 albums released this year.

Virus - Avant-Garde metal from Norway. The Black Flux is also in my top 3 releases of this year.

Gorguts - forever and always.....

Suffocation

Immolation

Symphony X - For a decent slice of cheese with virtuoso musicianship. SOOOOO fun to sing along with.

1. Decrepit Birth - Diminishing Between Worlds (http://www.metalreview.com/Reviews/4220/Decrepit-Birth-Diminishing-Between-Worlds.aspx)

Yes, Decrepit Birth's blistering DM clinic topped our list, and did so in impressive fashion. This list was complied based on data from the staff's individual Year End Lists (http://community2.metalreview.com/wikis/2008-top-ten-lists/default.aspx), and while Diminishing didn't score itself any championships, the album was ranked higher and more frequently than any other this year. And for good reason. The band's transformation into a tornado of technical-yet-melodic death metal bliss was one of the year's most pleasantly shocking surprises, and their efforts have set the bar at a ridiculous level. A band to watch, indeed.

Each lash, forum post, well-wish and throat-slash is much appreciated, and it keeps us plugging along. Keep reading the reviews, and we'll keep cranking 'em out. Here's to a killer 2009. Went to see Cynic/Meshuggah last Tuesday at the House of Blues. Cynic absolutely killed it, but they only played a 40 minute set with 8 songs (5 off TIA, 3 from Focus).

Meshuggah was hit or miss (as I had expected). Bleed comes off really well live, but they decided to play the full version of it, which makes no sense. The 5 minute version is pretty damn repeptitive as it is without the extra three minutes tacked on. And about 25 minutes into the show, you realize all the songs post-DEI just run into each other. Eh.

The Faceless were boring. Their opening instrumental was pretty balls though.

By the way, I take back my reservations about Genghis Tron. Board Up The House has really grown on me. I'm not sure if it's considered "metal", but its pretty innovative. It's like Dillinger Escape Plan meets Nine Inch Nails.

Also, I just got back to listening to Watershed. I'm actually enjoying it a lot more now than I did when it came out.

I've been giving Watershed a lot more plays as well. I thinks it's still one of Opeth's weaker releases...but that doesn't make it bad. Ghost Reveries took a while to grow on me and now I think it's one of their better albums (or their best post-Blackwater Park album).

I still think Watershed is on the bottom of the Opeth list, but it's still a pretty damn good album.

Might as well list 'em:
1. Still Life
2. My Arms, Your Hearse
3. Morningrise
4. Blackwater Park
5. Orchid
6. Ghost Reveries
7. Deliverance
8. Damnation
9. Watershed

Of the nine albums, not one has been what I'd consider "bad". Or even decent, they all rule pretty hard.

just leaked. 2 members of Necrophagist (not muhammad) are also members of this band. gnarley technical death metal.
The band name is Obsucra? Really?

Do they still sweep every five seconds?

Dragonforce is pure sweep picking.

Necrophagist are incredibly technical....plus, they absolutely slay live. One of the top 5 bands I've seen in concert, for sure.

Yeah. Metal Album of the Year unless something truly incredible comes along this year. Although the album is often more hard rock than metal. I think you mean "Cracke the Skye" is brutal. Must have gotten a mislabeled advance. They did a Neurosis song better than Neurosis. Hilarious.

The Dillinger Escape Plan is coming out with a new album either by the end of the year or the start of the next. That could be very good. After Ire Works, I think the might be on the cusp of something great.

Yeah, it completely bangs in the car. The album deserves at least 3-4 listens before any sort of evaluation. It's a grower.

I have no idea what your definition of "brutal" is....

And I've been hearing good things about the new Isis as well. Is Wavering Radiant something different or is it the same old Isis just done better? I'm debating whether or not to get it when it comes out.

In that instance, I meant brutal as in mindfucking, not totally heavy. Like "dude, your dad just died? Thats brutal".

I'd be lying if I said Wavering Radiant was anything different. They're going farther down the atmospheric route they started with ITAOT but they've picked up their game and work it in really well with the heavy parts.

Its an evolution of their music, but not a revolution. It is a fantastic album though.

This album also seems to have alot more vocals then their earlier albums, but this is the way they've been heading for a while.

I love it. I've listened to it about 10 times now and it gets better the more I spin it. Every time I listen to it I pick out a new layer of awesomeness lurking just beneath the surface. It's not a great departure from their previous material, but they've definitely improved on it.

Great band. Pretty underrated if you ask me. I prefer their earlier stuff as it leans more towards a heavier progressive death metal, but I do enjoy their new stuff.

I prefer later Katatonia. Viva Emptiness might be the greatest depressive rock album ever. The Great Cold Distance has at least 5 spectacular tracks and no bad ones.

They are releasing a new album in October. I can't hardly wait.

I just listened to a bunch of songs off Viva Emptiness. I don't know how you guys can enjoy his stuff. It sounds like derivative 90s "alternative" metal.

If you want to listen to something like this that's actually interesting just dust off that old copy of Dirt or Tripod by Alice in Chains. Hell, even Jerry Cantrell's solo stuff is miles ahead of this in in terms of songwriting.

I understand the comparisons, but I just think you're way off. There's some great songwriting in that album.
