Does anyone know if they are play any of their new songs at previous shows this year??? I am curious to hear Unforgiven 3.

Also I see on their site that they have the first leg of the North American tour posted... Man, no Ontario Canada yet...

No, the label didn't want them to play anything new too soon

I think they debuted the new song "Cyanide" at the Ozzfest show in Texas earlier this week.

That's been it so far that's actually on DM. I guess they had to beg to play it. I noticed they didn't play the first single which leads me to believe WB is keeping a tight wrap on the new stuff.

Lars has said they're not even releasing this to iTunes.

He also mention "alternate" ways for this to be downloaded online. Maybe they'll go the Radiohead route and offer up a pay-what-you-think-is-fair deal.

Which could be bad considering how shoddy St. Anger was.

But I am pumped to hear this.

One thing is that the songs are going to be available for Guitar Hero 3 the same day the album comes out... Wish they would have put it out for Rockband instead...

So with the different ways it will be out it has to get leaked... I bet Lars comes to your house and kicks the shit out of you...

But, like...you guys are just geeking out about it. I understand mild interest and anticipation, perhaps even something more if you like their first four albums more than I do, especially if you're in that weird crowd who passionately love their first five albums (something I can't claim). But fretting over the singles being made available as soon as possible? Documenting (with unrestrained glee) every movement of the band? Saying your faith is restored? Srsly? The surrealism is especially heightened considering I don't think any of you would identify yourselves as metalheads.

What's your favorite band?

When was the last time they put out an album you really love? For most of us it's 17 years. So us diehards are going to be pretty damn excited.

If you don't like the band, 1) you won't understand and 2) why even come here? Don't give me that "It's a train wreck about to happen" bullshit. You just hate the band and like to shit on them. You might as well just go post on Blabbermouth.net. Explain to me why some asshats seem to live to just shit on Metallica? Is it jealousy that you'll never be as good or succesful? Or is it you're all just lemmings and seem to do what's "cool"? I'll never understand people that shit on bands like Metallica or U2 just to do so. They know nothing of the band and their response to everything is "they suck" or "they sold out". Grow the fuck up. If you don't like them, fine. But why do you have to try and ruin everyone else's good time?

08-21-2008, 01:48 AM
And did anyone use say we were metalheads? I happen to like all kinds of music. Some of what people call "metal" is a joke. Black metal, etc. does nothing for me. That's the true joke of music today. I guess having an inaudible singer is awesome as long as the band drums fast and plays fast guitar. There's a reason that shit will never be popular. Excuse Metallica for having crossover power and being accepted by the mainstream.

You music elitist make me laugh. Notice I've not posted once in the "Metal thread" because it's not my thing.

But why do you have to try and ruin everyone else's good time?I'm not trying to ruin your fun, I just don't get it. As for why I don't like the current incarnation of the band - REALLY? Have you even LISTENED to the last three albums (and I personally think the Black Album is kind of an embarassment, but I won't start that)? As for sold out - try watching Some Kind of Monster again. I think a friend of mine put it perfectly: "Hearing them talk about things along the lines of making positive music from a negative emotion is a far cry from our brains are on fire with the feeling to kill twenty years earlier. " They've done nothing but alienate the fanbase (that would include me) and have repeatedly come across like crotchety old men who are not only completely out of touch with what made them good in the first place, but crotchety old men who are completely unaware that they are out of touch. I mean, I fucking love Judas Priest, but I didn't break my ankles running to the store to get Nostradomus. I'm not trying to shit on everything you do - I know I'd love to see them live - I just am rather surprised at the over-the-top salavation going on from some of you guys.

As for selling out - please don't try and kid me. They are the textbook definition of "selling out". They consciously changed their sound and image so that they could better cater to a wider audience and the teenage girl demographic.

Says you (And who the fuck are you again?). Maybe they didn't feeling like making MOP 4 times. Bands evolve. There's a reason they're coming up on 30 years as band. A lot of people, myself included, like what they continue to do. As I said on the old board, had some up and coming band made St. Anger it would have been praised. But since it was Metallica doing something new, it's shit on.

Go buy a ticket this tour, go, then just shut the fuck up

So you don't like the band, like I've said, fine. But you seem hellbent on just slamming them.

$75 floor, $55 seats, fuckers

The time is here!! The guys will finally be storming through North America and of course we want the Clubbers to get the best tickets. Without any bells and whistles, the details are: 1. The pre-sale for ALL North American shows starts at 10:00 AM in the city the show is taking place in (what we call around here "local time") on Saturday, August 30.
2. To access the pre-sale, you must have the personal ticket code that we have provided you on your profile page. Go get it now and write it down somewhere safe so you are ready for Saturday. YOUR CODE IS FOR YOUR USE AND ONLY YOUR USE. YOU MAY NOT SELL IT OR TRANSFER TO ANYONE IN ANY WAY. Btw, our friends at Ticketmaster tell us that the most common problem that fans have when purchasing tickets is trying to cut and paste it into the password section. We suggest you type it in one character at a time.
3. There is a four ticket limit per member, per show. You may buy tickets for as many shows as you like using the same code, but no more than four per show.
4. All tickets will be Will Call. That means that the person whose name is on the order must be the person to pick up the tickets at the box office on the night of the show. You will be asked for photo identification and you and whoever is in your group must immediately enter the venue after you pick up your tickets.
5. When it is time for the pre-sale in the city of your choice, go to the METALLICA TICKETMASTER LINK (http://www.ticketmaster.com/Metallica-tickets/artist/735647?tm_link=tm_homeA_b_10001_2). Ticketmaster will be handling all the pre-sale EXCEPT the following cities: Houston, Des Moines, Portland, Philadelphia, and Tulsa. If you want to buy tickets to one of these shows, you must log into Met Club and go to the tour page to click through to a private sale.
6. The Metallica Club pre-sale ends Tuesday, September 2 at 10:00 PM local time.
7. If you joined Mission Metallica using the code that you obtained as a Metallica Club member, you will NOT receive another personal ticket code through Mission Metallica. They will also be having a pre-sale that starts a few days after the Met Club sale does.
8. The good news - with every ticket that you purchase, you will receive a free download of the show that you went to from livemetallica.com!!!
9: Even more good news - ticket prices have not changed in FOUR years! Yep - it's 2004 again and floor tickets will be $75 and reserved will be $55. Of course there will be additional building fees, ticketing fees, etc., but you get the idea. The stage will be "in the round"!
For more information about your code, check out yesterday's news story here (http://www.metclub.com/members/news/news.asp?item=601149). You can also get more information by perusing the tour FAQ. (http://www.metclub.com/members/tour/FAQ.asp)

JAMES HETFIELD On 'Death Magnetic' (http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/magicmetalshack/message/25837): 'I Needed To Get Heavy And Scary

The New York Times has published a brand new article on METALLICA featuring
quotes from all four members of the band and Rick Rubin, the producer of their
forthcoming "Death Magnetic" album.

Rubin had seen "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster", the 2004 documentary about the
band's near-breakup and mendingand found it "brutal." It was the group at its
worst, he said, "artistically and personally."

He wanted the band members "to try to erase many years of thinking about either
needing to change their sound, or evolve," he told The New York Times. "If your
marching orders for the first 20 years have been 'change, change, change,' then
letting go of those preconceived ideas is in its own way a new idea."

In his first meeting with METALLICA two years ago, Rubin gave the band a writing
assignment. "I asked them to imagine themselves not as METALLICA," he said. "I
said to them, let's say there was a battle of the bands coming up and nobody
knew who they were, and they can't rely on any of their hits to get them over.
What would that sound like?"

He told them that "Master of Puppets" was the band's best album. He asked them
to imagine that it represented only half the material they owed the record
company in 1986. What would the other half sound like? "It can't sound like
those songs, because you already have those songs," he explained. "The exercise
wasn't to rewrite songs like that, but to write songs in that spirit."

Guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield told The New York Times trying to go back in
time was "a nice idea, and pretty near impossible."

"We know too much," he continued. "You can't make yourself a virgin again. But I
got what Rubin meant."

When asked whether it wasn't difficult to climb back into the person he used to
be, having only recently reformed, Hetfield told The New York Times, "Yeah, I
would say that was a different person. I know more now. But on this record, I
needed to take the reins again, and get heavy and scary with myself again. I
don't have to be afraid of the anger. I think it's a lot easier to access now. I
know how far I want to go with it, and I've gone far and still been O.K. I've
had duality my whole life. There's the person I hide and the person I show. I'm
the entertainer out there! I'm the master of the stage! When that's done, I get
to go sit by myself. So I am both. Is that the one I want to be? Is this the one
I want to be? Probably neither. But living in the middle just seems too blah."

I hate to be repetitive with this sentiment and negative in a somewhat kind of way, but this sounds like the modern version of them doing a cover of "...And Justice For All" era tunes. And for that matter, I don't mind the production save for Hetfield's voice. Call me an asshole, but I like that old, over-produced sound with all the effects from way back when.

Still, it's better than "St. Anger".

I just read an ign review on the 3rd "leaked" song on Metallica's website (Cyanide)...and this sums it up pretty well:

Emphasizing the point that this is not just an ordinary metal song, if this tune were released by any number of other metal acts out there today, it would be a smash hit. But because the level of expectation with Metallica rises – and rightfully so – with their songs, the end result and ensuing review is not always fair.

He still thought the song was awesome, giving it a little over 8/10.

In this episode, our heroes stop hitting the snooze button and battle the almighty pigskin, kids being treated like idiots, heavy metal's finest, Durstie's brain fart, and our HICAT picks of the week. How can you call them heavy metal's finest when you don't listen to metal?

How can you call them heavy metal's finest when you don't listen to metal?

1) Because they are
2) I do listen to metal, just not a WHOLE lot
3) The other Mike listens to almost nothing but Metal, so he fills in the metal void I bring to the table.

There are so many things I want to say. I want to call you shitheads for saying some of these things. I want to laugh at Mike for pretending that he listens to metal after calling Sepultura shitty and gay (aka admitting he's never heard of them). I want to call you guys philistines for not grasping the basic concepts of art ("I don't like it, therefore it's shit" is a simple thing to say). Most of all though, I want to point out that you're all fucking cocksuckers who are big enough douchebags to have never listened to, say, Watershed or Blackwater Park and yet say shit like "I make better music than Opeth".

Bravo Mike, I didn't think you could be a bigger popped-collar Zima-drinking MTV-watching douche. But you proved me wrong. Slow clap.

Have you even listened to Opeth? Not just a 30 second clip, like actually sat down and listened to an entire album? Because I've listened to every Metallica album several times over, including the current one, as well as every Opeth album, so I'm actually educated about both bands, whereas you're just talking out of your ass.

I'm not as high on Opeth as Gary, but if you can seriously listen to Watershed and go "I make better music", then you should kill yourself. Not that I seriously think you've ever listened to an Opeth album from start to finish.

It's been nearly 20 years since Metallica has cut an album that wasn't embarassing, terrible, or both. Sticky Fingers and Beggar's Banquet were the shit, but I'm not about to nut all over the place next time the Rolling Stones release a new album considering how shit all their post-1985 work has been. I fucking love Queen but anyone who thinks the Queen + Paul Rodgers album coming out this year won't be shit is kidding themselves.

Yes, my best friend is obsessed (but not an elitist prick about them), so I've heard the last few albums quite a bit at his place and in his car. It fucking bores me. Music is alright, but the vocals are complete shit. My beef with most "metal" bands of today.

Please, without Metallica most people wouldn't have even gotten into metal or listened to it. Give me Hetfield and Hammett any day.

I'm not being an elitist about it, but to call them "boring" and then to claim you can make better music than them is just fucking ignorant. So you don't like the vocals, I can see that, they're not for everybody, but if you can't appreciate and respect the musicianship and technicality in what they do, then you're either deaf or retarded, or a combination of the two.

I love how you guys are in A METALLICA THREAD talking about how bad Metallica is.

Just GTFO, and go listen to your terrible "music". I'd rather listen to Jason Mraz than Opeth.

...and yes, I've heard a few Opeth songs. My podcast partner has played me some of their stuff, and a buddy here in town has a CD. ADD said it perfect. Music is not halfbad, but the vocals kills them, and about 80% of the metal bands out there.

We were not talking about how bad Metallica is, fucking christ. Fuck, I didn't even bring up Opeth or other metal, it's you assholes who started that shit, I was just giving my opinion about the album.

I think Mike really crystalizess the Metallica problem. One of the rawest, most rebellious bands got hijacked by college douchebags who crinkle their noses at harsh vocals. I don't mean 'hijacked' in the sense that "Oh, now these fags listen to Metallica, that's lame!" I mean in the sense that Metallica said, 'hey, we can totally make a ton of money by catering to these guys.' Like, Old Metallica stopped existing after 1990. And so you have this legendary band with four albums that are adored by the metal community but were/are sort of-kinda ignored by the mainstream, and then four albums that were huge hits but hated by the metal community.

Sorry, I do find it very boring. I've never said I make better music. There's a reason I'm a sports writer and not in a band anymore. I respect what they do, and yes not my thing, but I'd take Metallica over them or any of these other newer "metal" bands any day in concert or what I choose to listen to at work, in the car, at home, while fucking, etc. To me, they are simply the better band.

As far as TIM claiming they haven't made a good album in 20 years, that's your opinion. For a band that was changing with the times and doing what they wanted to do, Load is not a bad album. Reload for what it is (a rushed disc 2 for Load that was originally supposed to be a double album), is not the worst album ever made (though, it is my least favorite Metallica one), and St. Anger was an alright experimentation. The drums are shit, but lyrically it's one of the strongest albums out there. Stuff liek Unnamed Feeling, Purify and All Within My Hands are some of the most over looked Metallica songs. The songs were too long because all they did was repeat, and there were no solos, etc. But I still stand firm on my belief had some new band made St. Anger, SPIN, Rolling Stone, etc. would have creamed themselves over it and claimed "Metal is saved" or some stupid shit like that. Perhaps if you said they've not made a good pure metal album in 20 years, I'd agree. But it's like people expect bands to never change, evolve, etc. There's a reason they've almost been around for 30 years. It's like U2. Had they made the same album 5 times, they'd not still be here. See where bands like Opeth are in 25 years.
