In lieu of recent fines, bogus roughing the passer penalties for sneezing near a qb, and db's getting fined and suspended for doing their jobs, is Troy Palamalu right? Is the NFL turning into a pansy league?
Compared to what it used to be, yes. But in the long run, I still wouldn't fuck with most of those guys.

and that is why I think that Goodell is an asshat. He care too much about off the field stuff, meanwhile his on the field product is being ruined by stupid fucking penalties and lame rules.
PS it has even infected college football. I remember saying to myself a couple seasons back that atleast you could lay into a college qb after he released the ball. But that's a 15 yrd penalty in NCAA now too. Remember when qbs used to have be tough?

Dudes are getting way too big, too fast, and too black.
Rules need to change to protect everyone on the field, or every nerdy QB will go the way of Gene Upshaw.
too soon?

Goodell is a joke. Don't fart on the QBs, but hey, Hines Ward, please continue to lead with your helmet. Fuck you so much. NFL is turning into a league for pussies.

I had to watch the Seattle/SanFran game, rather then the Giants and Steelers, I'm not sure what Troy did or didn't do. I notice the Refs calling a whole shit load of bullshit calls on Tampa during one particular drive in the Cowgirls game.
One Pansy rule that needs to go is running into the kicker. I can understand roughing him, but not being able to touch, might as well give them pink jerseys, and besides they are punters, not even real players.

One thing they never call is when an offensive player gives a staight arm which turns out to be a facemask. Drives me nutts!

It's not pansy, it's just not your daddy's football. The NFL has figured out that if they keep their stars around longer they make lots of money. Lots and lots of money... that's all the NFL is about anymore.

I understand that the players of today are lot bigger, stronger and faster than the players of old. I understand trying to protect players and I even agree with a few of the rules that they have implemented like:
no spearing, no crack blocks, no hitting the knees on an engaged player.
But some of these rules are utter bullshit. Especially most rules having to do with hitting the qb. Accidentally hitting the qb in the helmet and getting penalized is stupid, as is penalizing for a late hit when the DE gets there a split second after the qb has released the ball. Also, DB's getting penalized and fined for hitting a receiver when they are "defenseless" is ridiculous. If you think about it, as long as the WR's vision is focused on anything other than the defender, they are defenseless. This is utterly ridiculous.
What they need to do is bring back the ability of the defensive players to do their jobs without fear of getting a penalty or a fine. I can guarantee that some of great qb scrambles in recent years can directly be attributed to defensive players letting up for fear of getting a penalty for roughing the qb.
If they are going to penalize players for "bad" behavior, how about penalizing Wr's who complain and demand a PI call on every pass play? Or atleast call PI even handedly? 98% of PI calls go against the defense, when in reality PI is probably more like 60/40. Bogus PI call in the end zone? Tough shit, first down at the one yard line!
*end rant*

It's not just the penalties. It's the fines. You just shouldn't be fined 10 grand for making a great block. Then, you openly bitch about it, break a dude's jaw with a block and knock him out for the season, and don't get fined? The hit on Rivers was clean, but I thought they all were.
Actually, I guess I have to reverse direction here. I suppose I could accept the players getting fined if they took away the penalty aspect of it. If you drive a QB into the ground, you get fined the next week, but you don't get a penalty. 15 yards is way too much of a momentum swing.
Fuck, I don't know.

"running into the kicker/punter" is a joke rule. They should get rid of it but encourage referees to be more liberal with "roughing the kicker" calls in order to discourage teams from 'accidentally' knocking Ps and Ks down.
Calling "roughing the passer" whenever the QBs helmet is touched is nonsense. If a player slaps a QBs helmet in the process of sacking him, that is considered a penalty. Horseshit.
"Block in the back" on punt/kick returns are the ultimate superstar rule in the NFL. The most extreme example I can think of is the year Dante Hall had 4 straight games with a TD return; by the third game the Chiefs were getting away with murder on returns, and during the fourth game there was a massive and blatant BITB that took out two defenders that wasn't called. I don't know what can be done about this; perhaps fine the players?

fines and shit have gotten excessive the last few years. that said, i don't think it's a huge deal just quite yet, but if it continues in this direction it will be.

now that players and fans are discussing it on a regular basis, I'd say that it is becoming a big deal.

The one that drives me nuts is "driving the quarterback into the ground". That is EXACTLY WHAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO. The vast majority of QB injuries are ACLs on plant legs or idiot concussions that come from Trent Green thinking he's Mike Vick. They don't come from getting "driven into the ground". Unless you're Steve McNair, in which case you get the label "tough" because you were questionable for every game of your entire career.

I also hate the unneccesary roughness penalties for defensive players hitting a player a split second after they go down, slide, go out of bounds. They are paid/trained to move as fast as possible and unload on the opponent and yet are expected to defy the laws of momentum in .1 seconds.
