View Full Version : Guitar Hero
Given that no GH thread has been made despite all this time since the transfer am I right in assuming that I'm basically alone with my fresh copy of GH4? Anyone? Especially the Wii version?

You mean GH:WT?
Everything I read about the game is basically "It's good...but Rock Band did it first, and Rock Band does it better"
That's why I just bought the game. I'll be using my RB stuff on it. Despite it's weak-ass setlist, it still has a couple gems.
I dunno, I think the new drums are a fun variation (and make them more difficult, I was decent at RB drums with almost no work). Whatever, at this point it's pretty clear the set lists are what define the games, if they had let the drums be interchangeable I'd probably pick up RB.

The drums ARE interchangable.
Plus, I'm going to get the 3 cymbal add-ons to the RB drums here soon:

Hell, the Guitar Hero people even knew that the RB2 drums were better...because of that, if you have the RB drums plugged in, the GH game charts to those games (since RB drums have 1 less "button" then GH has)

After playing Guitar Hero for a while last night...I can see why the reviews have not been stellar. Like I said before, it has a few songs here or there that are extremely awesome..
...but god damn does Rock Band blow it out of the water. Hell...the first RB was much better than GH:WT, let alone RB2.
I think it basically makes it official: Harmonix was what made Guitar Hero awesome...not Red Octane. Ever since Harmonix left and started doing Rock Band, Guitar Hero has become weak.
Mike, WTF are you talking about? Outside of DLC (which obviously is deeper for RB right now) how do you see RB or RB2 as having more 'awesome songs' or whatever?

Well for one, how can you go "outside of DLC"? Rock Band has 400 songs already. Almost every single person can find 100 that they really really like.
But besides that, RB2's disk songs are just more in touch with what people want. Activision just doesn't get it, and are still stuck on the fact their name has GUITAR in it, and not BAND. We want variety, and fun songs on all instruments. Not JUST songs we know or are only good on guitar.
Read this article. I agree with a majority of the editors at IGN. Set list alone, Rock Band is better, and it really isn't disputable.

Well actually it's disputed in that very article... And it's hard to call something as much a personal preference as this not disputable.
And GHWT drums are >> RB drums, even with some cymbal pack.

No they arent. The only thing they have going for them is apparently they are a bit more quiet. Other than that, Rock Band's are better. They are having a ton of problems with the response of the GHWT drums, especially the cymbals, The RB drums are more sturdy, the bass pedal can't slide around everywhere, they have the expansion ports to actually have real cymbals (what drum kit do you know that only has two cymbals? The ones small ones I always see have 3).

...Are you a retard? The GH drums are also expandable, and a mobile bass pedal is a GOOD thing because you can put it where it's comfortable.

Ok, I'll give you that. I forgot the GH drums are also expandable. But the RB bass pedal can be mobile OR anchored. The reviews of the bass pedal for GH is that it flops around constantly, including several people saying it turns sideways halfway through songs...which makes kick drumming kinda hard.
Before we just keep going back and forth, I'm going to stop. I have not used the Guitar Hero drums, and don't plan on it. You can believe what you want, but if you go to ANY gaming site, you will see that the GHWT vs. RB2 arguement is largely in favor of RB in just about every way. Is that to say they hate GHWT? Absolutely not. But there isn't too much disputing the fact that a majority of reviewers agree RB is better.
Regardless which game is better you guys are both fags for playing it.

If there is one certainty in life, it's this: Anything humans can do, a robot can be built to do it better. Now humanity takes another dangerous step closer to obsolescence, as Cyth Systems has built what they call the "Cythbot," a robot that can automatically play Guitar Hero (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3159778) -- and play it well. In the video above, you can see a tech demo of Cythbot making its way through Living Colour's "Cult of Personality" on Expert difficulty, a song that's not exactly a breeze. Behold as Cythbot makes (gulp) mincemeat out of it.
As Wired reports (http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/11/guitar-hero-rob.html) (via (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/22/guitar-hero-playing-robot-takes-on-cult-of-personality/) Joystiq), the robot works by bringing together various components to tackle the different challenges of playing Guitar Hero. A camera hooked up to a "Configurable Signal Conditioning Enclosure (CA-1000)" views and analyzes the notes streaming down the screen, using the light intensity of the pixels rather than differentiating the notes by color. This system then interprets notes and sends signals to pneumatic "fingers" hovering over the guitar controller, which is held in place in an aluminum box frame. These signals tell the fingers when to activate, compressing onto the fret buttons and flicking the strum bar.
The result is a terrifying machine that's capable of reaching accuracy levels as high as 98 percent, although it more often performs around 75-80 percent -- but only because the pneumatic fingers can't always activate quickly enough.
But you know what? Even if this dastardly robot is someday able to hit 100 percent consistently, we're not worried. For it will, no matter what, forever lack that which separates man from cold, hard steel: the human spirit. To paraphrase (http://www.reelmovienews.com/quotes/look-man-your-can-listen-to-jimi-but-you-cant-hear-him-theres-a/) the great Wesley Snipes, you may be able to use pixel light intensity to interpret the music, Cythbot, but you just can't hear it.

Finally got around to playing this yesterday.
What a disappointment. Anyone who says GH:WT is better than Rock Band needs to be shot. Granted, I didn't play the game with "official" GH:WT instruments (I used the GH:3 guitar and Rock Band 1 drums), everything else is crap. The shitty setlist, the fact that you can't save other bandmates if they fail out, the lack of a "no fail" mode, downloadable tracks that are only sold in 3s (meaning that if you only like one song you gotta buy the other 2). You would think that after RB1 and RB2 came out, GH:WT would have improved upon their mistakes, but no, again they FAIL.
Good thing my buddy bought this and not me, I'm gonna stick with my Rock Band 2.
GH:WT < RB1 < RB2

The Guitar Hero franchise is huge. How huge? Huge enough that it could practically be considered an industry unto itself. Edge (http://www.edge-online.com/news/activision-guitar-hero-iii-passes-1b) is reporting that Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3159777), which launched in 2007, has become the first single game to surpass $1 billion in sales. The announcement came during a CES keynote by Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith, and follows on from an announcement that the entire franchise had broken the same mark a year ago.
Griffith said that Guitar Hero's monumental success has trickled down to other industries, most especially the struggling music industry. According to Griffith, sales on everything connected to Guitar Hero from music to real guitars have gone up.
As for gaming itself, Griifith confidently said that gaming is poised to eclipse "all other forms of entertainment in the decade ahead." He pointed to flat or declining sales of movies, music, books, magazines and newspapers between 2004-2007 as proof that games will soon be taking over.
"Gaming is changing the world of storytelling, the world of music and the world of entertainment in ways we never could have imagined a few years ago, and certainly not in 1972," Griffith said.
In meantime, Guitar Hero just keeps getting bigger. Will it ever hit a saturation point, or is Guitar Hero just filling the void that the music industry is leaving behind?

That's really too bad...because GH3 was the one where it started going downhill.
Although I'd be crazy not to pick up Metallica.

Having played both Rock Band and Guitar Hero, I would give the edge to Rock band just alone for the songs.
One thing I'm really psyched about is Guitar Hero Metallica coming out in March. Can't wait to play that one.

wow, if GH: Metallica has support for drums and vocals, that might make it pretty cool. maybe not rock band cool, but pretty cool.
I actually miss playing Enter Sandman since I imported my RB songs to RB2.

I've never played before. But did go out and buy GHIII for PS3 because I needed the controller, and it's actually cheaper right now at Best Buy to buy the wireless Les Paul w/ GHIII for $39.99 than it is at $70 to just buy the wireless guitar (whatever one was introduced for WT. WT bundle is $100, so fuck that). All this for a Metallica game because I'm a sucker and as of now (with a month to go) will not come in bundle form according to Best Buy, Gamestop and Toys R' Us.
edit: I attempted to play GHIII on the Wii when it was brand new and I was with my last GF and her neighbors did nothing but play the game and drink/smoke the whole time I was down at school. I sucked balls.

Pa Rappa the Rappa (or was it da rappa) was the closest I've ever come to playing a game like guitar hero. I'm not a hater it's just not my kind of game, even at parties and the whiskey's almost gone.
